Many PhDs take this kind of entry ground level position to gain practical sales experience. They know they are way over qualified in a no-brainer job, but leap into key leadership roles quicker, in most cases. No better way to manage the sales team then to first spend some time in the pits with them. Yes this was a foundation of W. Edwards Deming who established the zero defects, Six Sigma and lean organization toolset. Not intended to denigrate the sales team as they are in fact the core of the company. It only exemplifies how important they actually are. This is PhD level stuff, you may not get it all now but eventually you will.
