Merck to pay out 1 Billion dollars

To put it into perspective, the 500 million(FDA Schering) and now 1 billion dollar fine Schering/Merck paid would be equal to giving every person in the US a five dollar bill.

A number 1 combo at McDonalds for everyone!

I launched and sold Vioxx as many of us did, and I don't know anyone who promoted off label or talked about RA before we got the indication. If a few people did it, all of us pay. For those of us who stuck to the indications, and who marketed this product appropriately, we all lose because of the actions of a few (at what ever level they may be or may have been - probably present tense ---no further comment there ) And although I have to believe that we put money aside for this - I wouldn't have a hard time believing that we are now scrambling to find funding. this whole thing sucks because here we are again in the media and not for the right reasons. we just can't seem to get out of our own way. For those of us who want to see merck do well, yeah I am one of them, its just very sad because this affects alot of good people.

Sadly, 90% of the managers I've worked for tried to "coach" me into doing such things and I've paid for it with lost bonus, lost promotions, etc. the one thing that must be done to clean up the whole mess is to get rid of the CTL position. Why do we need field visits except to have the CTLs tell us to do things that violate policy???

It is calculated risk game. In 2004 the CEO was desperate to show results. We had no new products in the pipe line and wanted to kick Pfizer in the butt for what they did with Zocor.

"No sobbing here, Homer. I'm out of this fetid excuse of a company. Let's just say I feel I did do the right thing by getting the hell out of Merck's corrupt culture and found another (honest) way to make a living. Maybe you should, too. I don't mean to be rude, but you can save your thoughts and prayers for all whom have been harmed or suffered on account of something Merck has done since it's basically meaningless to those of us who found ourselves on the receiving end of a Merck wrongdoing. That's because in your company's guilty plea, they admit no liability or wrongdoing and no high-level management participation in the violation. What a company, no?! And Merck also has agreed to set up a monitoring program to insure compliance with federal laws and regulations in connection with the marketing of its drugs, the company said. Isn't that letting the fox guard the chickens? What total BULLSHIT. WHAT THE HELL DID THEY USED TO HAMMER HOME TO US IN SALES TRAINING BACK IN THE GOOD OLD DAYS about strictly adhering to saying only what was in the PI? But no, now some special monitoring program will insure all things will be better. Merck really is a mirror of our government. Total incompetence and a huge waste of money and time. Sorry, but as I see it, you "good" people at Merck carry the stench of Merck whether you want to or not. Unless of course, you happen to be in high-level management as your company stated. Isn't it nice to know Merck has your back for carrying their water? Yeah, I'm afraid you're all assholes when you continue to support this corrupt and deceitful company, appropriately being run by lawyers. Let's face it, you have to be."

The d bag who posted this is comical. First it is clear how many of the posts belong to him. But more importantly he clearly has been "wronged" by Merck. Ahhh boo hoo you f'n cry baby.

I bet the truth is you are now making an "honest" living and have since realized you had it pretty damn good at Merck. Anyone who works here and then moves on comes to that conclusion. Bottomline, pay is good, benefits are very good, and assuming you don't have a jerk for a manager you will never have a probloem juggling work life and home life.

The above jerk is so delusioned that he thinks he will be able to convince us to move on so we will end up being just as miserable as he is. He was wronged and thinks he is sticking it to Merck by posting on a blog.

Clearly delusional. Hey buddy post again about how unethical and how horrible of a place Merck is. Maybe it will convince me the 400th time. Now I am off to my vacation home in the mountains. Yes it is only 10am but I finished my work early. Oh ya the 3 hr trip don't cost me nothing in gas. I will wait patiently for my wife who will arrive around 8pm because she has a desk job.

God I hate this company!

PS- I never sold Vioxx. Nothing bothering me.

The d'bag hates Merck and you hate him and instead love Merck for the life it allows you to lead. Yet, I'll bet the d'bag loves you for finishing your work at 10am and enjoying free gas, sticking it to Merck in a way he only wishes he could. Sweet irony? I would hate Merck too if I had a vacation home in the mountains and the freedom to knock off work as needed. Nice!

where's jo-jo when we need her.....gosh i miss hearing about her hair on fire messages.

O Ya.... let's not forget the daily mind bombarding of voicemail messages "in it to win it minutes" brain washing messages to position greatness of Vioxx versus Celebrex. .

It is this mindless marketing and sales pitches created by the Merck leadership that killed Vioxx and thousands of patients. And let's not forget the market research and patient trackers data showing how the messages, strategy and tactics were working.

Let's see...all of this began when our phenomenal leadership team decided Merck needed to become FIRST and FOREMOST a magnificent pharmaceutical marketing team. This definition would launch us into the next century as a premier top-tier pharmaceutical company and we would maintain our stature and reputation in the pharmaceutical industry as a marketing driven pharma company. Oh my...what a disaster. Totally destroyed Merck and burned this once great "most admired" pharmaceutical company's reputation to the ground. Meanwhile, what made Merck great, ie the vaunted MRL machine grew rusty and just didn't operate as efficiently as it had in the past. That's brings us to now....aimlessly roaming in search of trust and value. It's a very sad tale with very little left of value.

Plus another 20 or 40 million to Massachusetts. What a f'en waste. Merck is so not what it once was. Time for someone else to step in and take over- a real merger and then tell Frazier to stay over at Pedophile State University permanently.

Nothing surprises me any more about this company. I actually remember a time when there was only good news and accolades for Merck. Now, that seems so long ago, almost like ti never happened. It did happen though, didn't it? People coming in long after we are gone will never know the glory that once was Merck. Time to read the paper and see the next scandal Merck is neither admitting or denying guilt about.

"only 1 count" looks like merck got off cheaply

You're correct, but it doesn't minimize Merck's guilt. The FDA will bargain over a plea by including potential indictments over other infractions. That was the case here. They know Merck has the billion dollars to spare and this streamlines the process and delivers the cash, while dealing a significant penalty and yet another black eye for Merck. It won't be the last, though. The FDA wouldn't put all of their cards down.
