Merck just bought us...To be announced on Monday

This was just posted on the Merck Board:
"The word at corporate is that we will only keep about 20% of the Cubist sales force. And none of the managers. Bummer for them." I sure hope that someone is telling a talltale.

Better have an advanced degree, even Merck secretary's have MBA's and beyond......I live by two of them. This sucks, hope it falls through.

Merck is in dire need of new drugs, new pipeline, etc. Their existing drugs are losing market share each month and they have 2-3 major drugs going off patent in a few years. The 3-4 new fda approved drugs they started promoting the last 2 years have been huge flops and are now starting layoffs in the very same division. When they bought schering plough in 2009, they laid off 75% of the sales force. They are desperate for drugs, not talent. Even after their last phase of layoffs in the summer, they are still rep heavy in specialty and in institutions. There is no way in heck they need more reps. They don't care if you have relationships or not. I swear, I am sorry but they will probably layoff 50-75% of the Cubist reps. Why would Merck keep you?. If the past is any predictor of the future, you have no chance. I came from Schering and was promised a spot in 2010, and my whole district was let go, my region was decimated by 80%. Merck has 2 Goals in mind, compete at all costs with new innovative drugs which they are in desperate need of from Cubist, and 2, to cut any and all costs. They have had a goal of cutting 15 billion by 2015. Merck is Big Pharma. When Pfizer bought Warner LAmbert, Pharmacia, and Wyeth, they fired everyone. Big Pharma gobbles up small pharma. Its inevitable.

Correct....recently left Merck and I will tell you reps and managers are being cut in waves. Many more to come. Don't expect to be kept and yes MBAs tend to keep their jobs more than anyone else. Unless you are are repeat Pres club winner they will probably not even give you the time of day.same thing happened with SP. Sorry to report this . Hope for the best, but don't be surprised if you are cut.

Home office knows nothing and we have no all employee call or meeting Monday. Doubt that sales force would be told something first. Times is reporting but these things fall apart all the time - Novartis was close to buying Cubist years ago. Best advice is to stay focused.

Stay focused on what? This has be a totally unfocused year at Cubist. Home office and upper management has been a mess all year. But stay focused? Who benefits from this buyout? Do employees benefit in any way even if they stay focused?

We are screwed! Merck bought Schering for 45 billion a few years back and fired tens of thousands of Schering reps. Merck is old school with Ivy league reps, good old boys club. They have 75k employees and won't keep any of us, they want our pipe and products only. Fuuuuuk

Sorry, the"Ivy league rep" mention made me laugh as I went to a State school. I wish you all the best in this if this merger happens. That being said many of my local rep are Schering reps. Merck did not discriminate here and I watched a number of Merck friends go. That being said, you bring a large portfolio of acute care products with you. We will also be launching new acute care drugs (fingers crossed) in the next two years. Hopefully, there is room for everyone.

Merck is not so bad to work for. Just don't expect the same wage compensation I think.

It's been a good ride. Hopefully they are fair with the severance. Most cubist reps left anyways, a while back. Maybe we should have gone to MEDCO. How long will this take to complete? Are we still launching C/T? Just wondering...

We just got bought, are about to get our pink slip, and all you want to know is if we are going to launch C/T? Wow, you really are a sheep.

Enjoy your roommates at national and regional meetings. No more bar tabs, boys and girls. Pull out your own plastic.

And you think call reporting is bad now? (Not that it will matter for long...But it will be bad while you're waiting for that dreaded phone call.)

You all might want to send GS, TC, RP and MB one last thank you note for Always having your backs.

Someone on the Merck site mentioned a severance of 3 months and 1 week for every year.
Don't know if true or not. Does that sound decent to everyone? Most of the sales force is probably less then 3 years because as you indicate most Cubist dapto launchers are long gone.

We do not have roomates at meetings, but yes - no more bar tabs.

FoR the next meeting, and until the realignments and cuts are complete, the word is there will be roommates at the next POA/NSM. It's the only logistical option.

Sorry to have to report. I like my space as much as the next person.

MERCK is usually closer to 6 weeks plus one week per year.

Don't mean to burst your bubble but Merck has laid off 55,000 people the last 6 years and continues to lay off. They buy companies for products not for the people. They only want Merck people regardless of how good you are. Take it from someone who has been there. BTW, the institutional sales force there is very lean already.
