The context of that statement was that Animal Health was not a focus for job cuts as opposed to the 8500 jobs that are being cut on the human side.
Frazier: Let me go back to what I said. We like the animal and consumer businesses. We think they contribute to Merck… Like any other aspect of our business, our job is to look at opportunities to drive long term cash flow and to meet needs of our customers. If I made the conclusion that animal and consumer outside of Merck would be a more productive, then I would make that decision. …

The quote from Ken Frazier. How can you not say that means no lay offs in Animal Health? You have to be a Summit moron.

Here's the entire paragraph: Frazier: Let me go back to what I said. We like the animal and consumer businesses. If I made the conclusion that animal and consumer outside of Merck would be a more productive, then I would make that decision. … We look at our enterprise portfolio on an ongoing basis. I would not say there is a specific focus on animal and consumer at this time.

Yes, a focus to divest. They are already cutting and eliminating positions. If the offer is made that he determines increases shareholder value we are history. Could be a very positive development.

Agree. Name one benefit of being owned by Merck. Now name one drawback. Most of us can go on for days with this last one....

It depends on what Merck does with the division. If it is spun off, they will need employees. If it is sold to someone, usually they are buying products not people. Look what happened to the other side when Merck bought Schering Plough, it has been a bloodbath for former Schering people. Will be the same for this division if they are sold to one of the competitors.

With all of the regulatory issues they kept their sales force stable. Give them something positive to sell and you will see the sales force grow.

Novartis may very likely make a bid for MAH. MAH has most of what Novartis needs to play in the animal health big leagues and Merck corporate would welcome a large cash infusion.
