Leadership gaslighting you

How did we miss so badly on our pipeline..There is no innovation in oncology. Very sad. Our hold pipeline is just trying to make little changes in existing molecules. Even our bi-specific is just further twist on Gazyva.. after Covid this place is going to be a ghost town.

You want to know why? Roche drove all the good young scientists out. We used to have a mission and purpose here when Art was the boss. Now our labs are like a freaking post office. It is almost embarrassing to tell people I work here these days. I am getting out soon.

it’s worse than that. They have so much safety baggage ... in indolent diseases. Idiots!!! On top of that gRed and pRed are fighting while competition is about to pass us by.

Truth! Roche's science talent left in the 90's so rather than make changes and attract top scientists they latched onto GNE. In desperation they finally bought the company but everyone knew they would kill the goose that laid the golden egg. The goose is now on life-support.

What did Roche have before it ruined GNE? A freaking pimple drug that drives people crazy, a diet pill that makes you sh_t in your underwear 10 times a day and a dog bone drug called boniva. Their only and last claim to fame was 60 years ago when they sold valium. That tells you everything you need to know about their science.

You realize that the whole point of ecosystems, customer engagement and blah blah is just one thing: restructuring, downsizing and cuts.

They will tell you to have XYZ mindset. They will tell you the future is bright. They will tell you they are doing it for you - for your development and growth.

While all BA is really doing is delivering on his promise to BOD and SS: Genentech will maintain its margins no matter what happens with biosimilars and launches.

Genentech has never faced a patent cliff before. When other companies face such a point: they buy something, they sell themselves or they do a larger merger of equals —- or they go through multiple rounds of restructurings. These options, at face value, weren’t the “Genentech way” so they had to come up with another idea. So the idea was to shuffle everything around - create chaos, chnage and uncertainty. This allowed them to break existing processes, loyalty, teams, culture and mindset. The goal of this shuffling was it created an environment to be able to justify the cuts and trim the fat so BA could deliver on his promises.

Will things change? No, not in the near term. Leadership will tell you they have ever confidence in customer engagement and ecosystem model. They will tell you it’s better for you. If you’re savvy - play along and they’ll reward you. That’s part of the gaslighting process - creating 360 surround sound around the hold outs. It will keep going on until one thing happens: Genentech returns to positive topline growth in the US. This will happen in 2022 or 2023. Until then, expect further cuts, changes and shuffling - its all just downsizing with another name.

You can blame leadership. They didn’t have a choice. I would have preferred them be straightforward instead of doing this gaslighting thing they are doing but hey, what do I know?

MINDSET, AGILITY, CUSTOMER ENGAGEMENT, ECOSYSTEM are words to f your mind, distort your reality...doublespeak!

judge for yourself from Wikipedia:

Doublespeak is language that deliberately obscures, disguises, distorts, or reverses the meaning of words. Doublespeak may take the form of euphemisms (e.g. "downsizing" for layoffs and "servicing the target" for bombing), in which case it is primarily meant to make the truth sound more palatable. It may also refer to intentional ambiguity in language or to actual inversions of meaning. In such cases, doublespeak disguises the nature of the truth. Doublespeak is most closely associated with political language.

Think about it.

Let’s take CUSTOMER ENGAGEMENT. Customer is a good word, it’s the person that uses and pays for your product. ENGAGEMENT is also a nice sounding word meaning “an arrangement to meet or be present at a specified time and place.” Now, in reality, what has customer engagement really meant at Genentech? Well, “clinical specialists” or reps meeting with customers is outdated, doesn’t work, and the share of voice model is dead....so let’s lay you, the reps, off because you’re no longer needed! Discarded like last nights’ trash.

funny how we have come to realize that “customer engagement” has come to mean we need less of the people who meet with customers, huh?

it’s also kinda funny how they explain it to us. How Genentech is going to change the industry! Funny when I talk to friends outside Genentech they ask me, “aren’t you just restructuring / layoffs because of biosimilars? We did that X years ago when we had X patent cliff too.”

just giving it to you straight my, brothas and sistazz, because leadership won’t!

Great post and spot on. You forgot the best one though. Making people reinterview for their jobs and spending so much time and money on it. Crafting cookie cutter, bs resumes taking out your accomplishments and sales numbers and memorizing SHARE stories like robots. Feeling “lucky” they chose you because you had the right mindset or not hiring you because you didn’t. In essence it was all those who think for themselves that weren’t rehired or who didn’t ass-kiss the slime bag HEDs/HDs. All a way to hide the fact that it didn’t matter what you did in your job, they were going to hire their friends. PERIOD. There was also a lot of retaliation. So sad.

For anyone who wants to negatively comment that I’m bitter because I didn’t get a job. I’m not. I feel fortunate. I chose not to interview last fall during the “pioneer” ecosystems. I saw that shit show coming. Took my severance, paid off my house and kids college loans and work for a great company now. I didn’t listen to their propaganda.

To those who stayed, I wish you well and hope you’re able to be happy there. If not, there’s a great life outside of that hell hole.

smart move. I wasn’t so smart but I’m leaving after I get paid. But not expecting much. Bonuses this year will suck. there is literally no money left in budget!

Gaslighting is a type of emotional abuse. Someone who is gaslighting will try to make a targeted person doubt their perception of reality (it’s your mindset that’s the problem. This isn’t about saving or cutting, it’s about the future. Genentech will lead the industry. We are doing this to better serve our patients. What we did for last 40 years is no longer relevant). The gaslighter may convince the target that their memories are wrong or that they are overreacting to an event (You have to be ok with uncertainty. Be flexible and open minded. We celebrate when our talent leaves. Our reputation remains strong.). The abuser may then present their own thoughts and feelings as “the real truth.” (The future is bright. We have a rich pipeline. We believe in customer engagement and the industry will follow us. I’m confident in our future. There will be no layoffs. There is more work than people. I see people and they are busy. We don’t anticipate any changes now. We haven’t talked about restructuring.)

Amen!!

Aka brainwashing.

I stayed and have regretted it ever since. They made me feel special and fortunate that I got a job over my also highly qualified friends and colleagues but it’s been a nightmare ever since.

No one knows what they’re doing. Primary care tracking and monitoring and every HD is out for themselves in my ecosystem. This isn’t the way it if everywhere I’m told but it is in mine.

I wish I’d taken the package. My former teammates and friends who got out are all so much happier and richer (not that that’s everything but it help with 3 kids to put through college).

I’m out of here in April 2021. I’ll take my stock, 401K match and bonuses first and focus on my side job and just when you think you’re throwing me back in to the marketplace I’ll leave you like a cheating whore.

Biggest regret of my career is to choose to interview. I thought I was lucky when I got selected over some of my higher performing teammates. I thought they just did not have the right "mindset". The whole thing is basically a joke and sham. I still don't see what mindset they're looking for. They might as well hire the high school drop-outs for what they are expecting. It is a giant failure. The HDs and HEDs are totally clueless and have no idea what they are doing. Some of them are simply bad people. They must have destroyed others to get their jobs. I wish I took the package when I see my friends working for good companies now. I will get out the first chance I have. Maybe this is for someone who just want to have a paycheck. i want to do something meaningful to my customers. I was to be led by someone I can learn from. I want to see integrity in our leaders. This is not it.

I fell for the 'compliment' of getting the job over my peers, too, and now feel like an utter fool. Leaving as soon as I can and won't EVER make that mistake again. If if doesn't look and feel right, (which it didn't), then it isn't.

I suggest that all of the managers at Genentech should look for their next career move in the used car lots. I interviewed with them for a TAM job hoping to join one of the best companies in this industry. At least that was what I thought! When I walked out of the interviews, I couldn't believe the level of arrogance and ignorance among these people. None of the things they said made sense to me. It was like the twilight zone. What is wrong with this company? Something happened? I always heard great things about it. I should have come to this site before meeting them. The nutjobs just convinced me how good my current company is!
