Layoffs Are Coming

What did I communicate? Gone gone gone. 1800 is only the beginning by the end of 18 the number will be two and a half that number. Any rep without a technical degree will be gone.
yes! When I heard what the reps who were retained would have in their bag...it only buys them a couple of years until this happens again.

I really don’t want to sound mean, but I am relieved the diabetes reps are getting to sweat it out this time with us. It was a bit unfair that they were “ring-fenced” last time. Some were so arrogant and now they are feeling it too. If any survive, maybe they will be a bit more empathetic next time.

Oh, come on! This post is a lie; every idiot Merck rep in the country has been saying so since it was written in March.

Someone please turn out the lights on your way out the door. With the exception of Keytruda, this company is toast. And Keytruda needs about 200 sales reps to get the job done.

I want to know if I will still be employed?

Like the other poster said you probably have a 50/50 chance like everyone else. Whats going to happen is going to happen..try not to think to much about it, just make peace w/ yourself if you are laid off. No sense being bitter about it if you are let go because no one is going to care and you will not be getting back in. It's not the end of the world and there is life after MRK. You will work again somewhere else or doing something new and refreshing.

I don’t want to be bitter. I’m not. Just concerned that there are 9 people in the running for my territory and only two spots to be filled. A lot of experienced reps. It doesn’t help that Lilly is having a massive layoff and putting even more reps into the unemployed pool. A lot of companies have hiring freezes or are letting reps go. Not a great time to be job hunting. Yes I will get a severance package if let go, but it may run out long before I land another job. I don’t want to just settle for the first opportunity but I don’t know if it is wise to pass any position up at this time

Sounds like you are setting your bar to high.. Just roll w/ it. Tens of thousands of Reps got let go in 2008/2009 from various companies during the Great Recession and they all seemed to survive just fine. This is not even close. Experience really doesn't matter when it comes down to down sizing either. If now is a great time to get another job, 2018 is the time, Unemployment is at an all time low. Can you imagine how bad it was for the Rep that got let go during the 2008/2009 time frame? This is nothing. Don't make it worse than it is...Being laid off high be the best thing that ever happened to you.

Don't worry folks. There are plenty of jobs out there for you whiners... Target, Sears, Lowe's, Home Depot, Uber, etc., are all hiring. Learn how to run a cash register, drive a bus or stock shelves and put your real talents to use.

Be well.

NOT FUNNY! Families are being disrupted across the board! Show some class!!

Folks you people worrying about getting laid off really need to start forming a plan B/C because even if you get another job in Pharma it is not a secure stable position anymore. If you like living the wheel of uncertainty in Pharma you better get used to always being on the block every 3-5 Years. That is no way to live, plan a future or raise a family. Quit frankly the industry sucks anymore.

3 to 5? Try every 1-2 years. All jobs are contract whether you don't want to be "labeled" as contract or not.

So true poster #224. I was downsized in 2014 when the diabetes reps were “ring fenced”. Beware to the managers and reps who are still at Merck that backstabbed and threw others under the bus to try and keep their jobs, job hunting may not bode so well for you. There are former Merck people all over the industry and they most likely know your reputation and will let it be known. For those who have worked hard, been kind to others and have kept their contacts with former Merck employees, you will be in good shape. Leaving Merck after a very long career was scary and sad but also liberating. For the people who say you can’t make as much money at another company, that is simply untrue. I stayed in pharma and my salary is higher than it was at Merck. There is less micromanaging. My skills are valued. None of the iPad scare tactics are used like how early in the day did you get a signature or where was your location at the end of the day....It is about educating hcps and driving sales. Not at all the paranoia I felt at Merck the last few years working there. It will be ok. And probably better for your mental health in the long run.

This should have happened years ago. When I ran a large sales team In the US I always said that reps were way overpaid for the job that they did. Eight calls a day if you were lucky, a couple of pharmacy calls, maybe a lunch. Somehow we continued to employ thousands when we should have employed hundreds. Way overpaid for the deli slinging job that it was. So there you have it. Good bye. Sorry but reality has just slapped you in the face. Bitter? Me? No. Just a lot smarter than you with your fancy degrees, from your fancy colleges. FU

Thank you to the post above. I am choosing to opt-out and move on. I've always been kind to my friends at Merck and because of that I am getting lots of help from those friends who are now with other companies. Thank you for not being hateful with your comments. They are kind and true.
