IT'S TOO EARLY TO LOOK FOR A JOB

IN A PREVIOUS POST SOMEONE SUGGESTED LOOKING FOR A JOB. IF YOU WERE JUST HIRED A WEEK AGO OR HAVE BEEN HERE FOR 9 YEARS YOU ARE GETTING THE SAME.

Follow me on the hypothetical (I think cuts before April but here goes)

April 1- layoffs
paid through the end of May.

June starts your 20 weeks and will take you till the end of the third week of October.

YOU CAN collect unemployment on June 1st in conjunction with your severance. If you bank your severance (most of us will get the max allowed of $2000) for June-October that will yield 10K.

The bottom line is you will be paid till next Christmas!!! If you walk away now you get nothing. If you interview now- get an offer and DON'T take it- you loose all this. Yes there is security in getting a new job- but why rush? If you burn a recruiter by going to far into the interview they will never help you again.

You have insurance for a year FREE (Pfizer gave them 3 months then cobra at $1700 a month).

ALSO- you get a retraining stipend of $2500. Add that to you still incoming unemployment of $2000 a month for November and December.

WHAT WILL CHANGE? You will need a car- that's all that changes. for the remainder of the year. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE TIME!!!!

You have kids? play with them more and enjoy the precious time.
Want to travel and see family, or sit on a beach, learn an instrument, plant a garden? What do you want to do? Take this time to take care of yourself and your family. Don't walk away by starting to interview now. I promise you there will be a job somewhere for all of us that is better and happier than this shit hole.

They have abused us enough and for too long to walk away from this gift. I will start looking on April 1 when I get the call!!!!

Till then I am staying home to have sex all day- who is in? (hehe)

That sounds reasonable, UNTIL you start looking for a job. There may be a select few with so many connections that they can find a job soon. However, I was laid off last year, I have a great resume, and it still took me over six months. It is super tough out there, so my advice to everyone is to start looking right away and and take it if you find it. Trust me, it is brutal out there.

Anyone wanting to stay in pharma is truly not getting the picture. So what.. you get a job with another company for a year or two? Then what? You going to spend the next 1-2 yrs planning for the year after? Cut your losses and start somewhere else. There aren't enough jobs in this sector for all of us so start thinking out of the box.

X-ray tech, radiology, ultrasound, get your masters and go manage a big office, start a business. So many things we can do- the problem is so many are too damn ignorant and dumb to do anything other than this. Some are too good to be here and others should have never been here.

Good luck to all but recruiters are saying get out because they are getting out too.

work TWO jobs until you find out if you are getting the severance!!! They are just trying to get more people to quit so they don't have to pay them all the exit benefits. No one will know. We work 10-2pm anyway.

Also, make sure you take all your personal days by April 1st. You will NOT get paid on them!!!

agree with the previous post, though there is no need to "panic", I would start looking and making connections now. as someone who was laid off last year and knows tons of former/current reps with both novartis and pfizer, I can tell you it is a different world. If you plan to stay with pharma, expect a pay cut (I know this is NOT true in all cases so please don't jump down my throat, but for those who have salaries in the 70's, 80's and beyond, its VERY rare to get hired on at that rate). Expect fierce competition. Expect an uphill battle in converting your "sales" experience into other industries (except insurance sales, you'll get tons of offers there).

On the other had, expect that once the dust settles and you land another job (and you will) you'll never look back and quite possibly view your layoff as one of the better things that could have happened to you.

Post dead on. Documentation. Brag book, specific examples of what you can do, and be prepared to tell your story positively (dont paint yourself as a victim).

REALLY I'VE BEEN OUT OF WORK SINCE THE LAST LAYOFF, RIGHT MANAGEMENT IS A JOKE. I'VE HAD EXACTLY 3 TOTAL INTERVIEWS IN A YEAR. YOUR IN FOR A BIG SURPRISE

I think the last poster is the fellow who has been whining since the last layoff about not getting a job, blah blah blah! With the huge number of reps laid off last time also (remember, in some areas it approached 50% with a much higher base) why have so many landed firmly on their feet? Those who survived are looking outside this industry. They are highly trained and will to train further if necessary. They have always prepared for uncertainty. Anyone who has only had 3 interviews in a year must be churning out resumes in their basement, mailing them out and not following up. I was a 58 year old male and had a new job in 2 months--never wasted my time waiting for someone to read my resume from a pile of others.

In a lot of states, you must burn through your severance BEFORE you can draw unemployment. GA is one of those states. For example, say your salary/bonus averages $6000 per month. If you received a $30,000 severance, then you could not draw until the end of 5 months ($30,000/$6000). Check your state's unemployment provisions on their website.

This is that f"""in loser that keeps posting in CAPS about how they have no interviews and been out of work since the last layoff.

HMMMM WONDER WHY???

How do they know if you get a severance. I would check the box NO

I feel that same way. I will be paid till about December and then i have a substantial amount of cash socked away for just this reason. Oh and I have some stock options I can cash in . I have been working non stop for the last 20 years and feel like a few months of R&R are not going to hurt especially since the pool of candidates will be full in the next few months. September seems like a great time to start.

Not really. November and December are dead months.

I don't know how much you earn per month, but the severance and unemployment doesn't come close to covering my current pay for the year most will be out of work.

And don't forget, the longer you are out of work, the harder it is to find work. You are far more employable NOW while you still have a job, than you are once you are unemployed.

Novartis makes you take a lump sum severence so you do not get it monthly. Therfore, once you take the lump sum you are no longer on the payroll and can collect unemployment. Its a federal law. Some companies give you the option of a monthly severance, If you took this you cannot collect unemployment until that is complete. Again, Novartis only does lump sum severence. I just went through the Oncology layoff

I think this can go both ways. There are so many folks out of work right now that employers are interviewing a lot of them. I know that each hiring manager wants to hire the best person for the job, but what about the human condition of empathy....hiring someone who has a job or taking someone off of unemployment??? What if it comes down to 2 people who are equally qualified, but one is employed and one is not?

I personally would hire the person who was unemployed. They are so darned thankful to have any job, they work their asses off. But, if you are out of work for longer than average, that raises questions. And, some companies, ridiculous as it is in this economy, still won't hire you if you are unemployed.

It is not a stigma to be unemployed anymore especially since it is truly through no fault of your own. I have seen reps unemployed for a year who are now just getting that job and are fine.

It is true you shouldn't rush it since you need time to accept and process what has happened. If you jump in too soon you'll end up hurting yourself for future opportunities by messing up on an interview etc. It only takes a little mess up in an interview to shut down an opportunity with a company and then that contact can't help you or if referred by a recruiter they will move on to the next candidate for future job orders they get.

Also figure out what you want to really do before jumping into another job that is meaningless. Think before you waste time, another year of your precious life, on something you can't build on. In medical sales your always looking over your shoulder at the next layoff. Device sales is the same they are laying off and if you don't produce your out faster than pharma.

I interviewed with a biologics company in March of this year,Lantheus Medical Imaging if I took the position I would now be facing a layoff since the are currently cutting and had large #'s of employees managed out for performance before that. I can't believe I almost took that job, would have gone through all the training etc. and be facing layoffs.

You have a unique opportunity to have severance coming in and extended unemployment benefits. Use the time and money to make your next career move in something you enjoy doing. Life is too short to spend day in and day out making small talk over a meat tray to someone who has no desire to talk to you in the first place not to mention role plays, role plays, role plays ....ugh and some "Bill Lumberg" from office space sitting in your car every month. Remember by the end of the year you'll be meeting with the "two Bob's" and handing in your red stapler.

If you look at your severance after taxes it would be the same as 5 mos. with Novartis. You are telling me you couldn't live on the 5 mos that you would have been getting anyway if you were still with Novartis. The word is BUDGET. I was smart and put away enough money to live on for at least a year if I have to. Do I want to spend it all...No. But at least I have the peace of mind.
As for being more employable, maybe years ago but now every person out there that is hiring especially in this industry will know about the layoff. With so many people getting "caught up" in it, if you have past successes and awards, you will stand out. I agree an employer may be more apt to give an unemployed person the job if both were equally qualified.
