Is anyone happy at Shire?

I am happy because we have great products and benefits. The money is good and a company car is always a plus. However, I am growing more and more weary of the unbelievable incompetence displayed by the corporate office. I would get nauseous when I heard most of them speak in Atlanta.

I am happy.. Except when I am with my RD. RDs seem to know how to make you depressed to the point of meds regardless of good numbers and activity. They have their favs...

When someone asks you what you do for a living what do you tell them? Honest replies please and include your approximate age. I believe the responses will be different given one's age and experience.

I am fortunate to have a good RD. It sucks that some people have RDs who are clueless as to how to manage. Yours is obviously clueless if you are successful and he/she still makes you feel depressed. Shire has a LOT to learn when it comes to developing managers.

Great way to describe how I feel as well, love the job beside the rd. tired of feeling like shit every month

I am in a similar boat but it could be way worse... All you can do is try to show your manager youll do whatever it is they think you arent doing good enough and change..easier said then done. But you better try if you want to keep your job is my advice.

Having worked in pharmaceuticals nearly 20 years although briefly with Shire - by far this company by my standards has an excellent reputation and products having promoted over two dozen successful drugs over two decades. In the pharma industry 'your manager can make you or break you' is a phrase I learned to follow - having been thru over a dozen managers, I have been fortunate to work with a majority of positive motivators as managers. At Shire, I have worked for two and both have been and are excellent people; yet I have heard and observed several who I would have dreaded to work for, and I feel sorry for those currently in that position because they do exist and even though you are successful, they continue to enforce a negative environment. When my manager comes to work with me, we have fun, we learn, and try to grow the business from our interactions, however the result is a positive experience I look forward to every month - few in this industry can say that!

That is great to hear! The problem is that there are not too many like that. I would love to look forward to it every month and maybe our Regions numbers wouldn't be so bad if all reps looked forward to it. Your manager needs to spread the secret with the others. It's a shame that any manager would have this style. It's not productive and doesn't build a good team.

Amen!! There are too many demotivating and untrained RD's, especially in the nottheast. Why don't you guys back off a little and let us do our job! Quit threatening our jobs everytime we talk to you! Another thing you may want to consider is treating all Reps fairly! Having "favorites" is a terrible way to manage.

Any manager who says they dont have favorites is lying or in denial

The on ly way that change will occur is to document when you are feeling that you have been treated unfairly. It's great to rant on CP but to constitute change, you need proof. I have been with Shire for 7 years and I have worked with 4 RD's. The worst RD is the one who has been from the "Old Shire" mentality where they believe that there is only 1 way to sell to physicians/providers, and if you are not communicating in that exact way, then a "discussion" will take place. Leading is not rocket science....Enable to reps to succeed, support them, practice strength-based leadership, and praise them.

I agree. They need to create a motivating environment and support us instead of beating us down. The biggest thing is that every territory is different, we all have challenges, so please quit comparing us to territories that are 2000 miles away.

Reps are the reason your insignificant ass gets to sit in a cubicle all day working on useless projects that will never impact the bottom line, in between playing words with friends on your phone.

While you drive around in your provided car delivering doughnuts making your 6 (if that) calls per day.

Some of the "insignificant" asses sitting in cubicles, working on "useless" projects are the reason why you actually have a product to sell.

Ha! Good one. Let's face it all you drug reps have it pretty easy. You get up to or 6-figures by lavishing these docs w overly priced lunches, make a few phone calls, sit in a company car for a few hours and call it quits. Why not? No one is watching.

Lavish lunches? You watch too much tv... I have a budget of 1500 for 125 docs which gets about 4 offices a month panera subway or baja fresh, I can't afford to get them drinks even..

Let's be honest. When it comes down to it, we do work for a pretty good company. The benefits and potential bonus seem to be competitive. The scary part is why are there so many higher ups jumping ship. According to many of the corporate leaders, Shire had a great year, the pipeline is strong, and the future is exciting. Then again I ask, why are so many of the leaders that have grown Shire to this point, leaving. They obviously know something we don't.

As far as the Reps being happy, we would probably all be a lot happier if upper management would stop the "Management by Fear" idea. It doesn't work, it makes Reps do things they normally wouldn't do. Get off our backs and let us do our job. RD's need to start creating an environment that focuses on teamwork and positive ideas. Quit punishing us if we are doing what you ask and meeting our Quarterly Goals. Just because the Nation finishes 1% above us doesn't mean we are idiots.
