"Illegal activity at LabCorp"

The latest. News article on TV station stating Labcorp faxed lab results to incorrect number. Suppose to have gone to Heath Center, instead it was faxed to a private citizens. Citizen called Labcorp and told them she/he had received the information, but other test results continued being received. This individual contacted one of the patients stating that she had their test results . This patient was waiting on results for cancer. This patient was livid. News reports went onsite to Labcrap's campus and could not speak to anyone. What a violation of HIPPA. Hope this company is burned

this is total BS...no way is it true

if it is post a link to the articles and tv website

I don't doubt it at all. When I worked there it happened all the time.

Yeah, happened when I was working there too. I actually talked to a private citizen who had been begging not to receive test results for other people. I didn't have anything with somebody waiting for cancer results, but then again, I don't know what the tests were for anyway.

Hey I think the company is completely messed up and even though I am an employee I go to Quest if it's important.

That said with the shear volume of results going out this is bound to happen occasionally. The real problem is the company is so understaffed, dis-organized and downright lost no one can correct ANYTHING quickly. The patient services staff is so understaffed and undertrained they are lucky they can turn on thier computers. Then they have to deal with a system developed in the 1980s that still uses tape to move data between platforms and thats just at headquarters, each division still uses its own platform.

Honestly results going to the wrong fax number is only a very small part of thier problems. When you do get the results just pray they're right.

Company Mistakenly Faxes Medical Information
LabCorp Sends Nearly A Dozen Faxes Of Patient Information
POSTED: 1:53 pm EDT April 11, 2009
UPDATED: 2:23 pm EDT April 11, 2009

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- A Triad medical company said it mistakenly faxed almost a dozen pages of personal patient information to the wrong number.

The lab test results were sent from LabCorp, and were meant to go to Winston-Salem Health Care. Instead, they went to Leigh Ambruso's home insurance office.

"I don't know how to read test results," she said. "I know enough to know I wasn't supposed to have this information."

For six days, LabCorp sent information from about 12 patients to Ambruso's fax machine. Originally, she said, she didn't think anything of it.

"I just want people to know this is happening," she said.

But the faxes kept coming. Ambruso said she explained the error to someone at Winston-Salem Health Care who was supposed to get the information.

"She said, 'Do me a favor and fax them to me,'" Ambruso said.

She said she finally had enough and realized the fax was violating the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.

"I said, 'If you send me one more fax, I'm going to call the patient and tell them I have their personal information,'" Ambruso said.

WXII12 contacted one of those patients. William Dull said he was anxiously waiting on results to determine if his cancer remained in remission.

"It's very upsetting," Dull said. "It's not being handled like it should be."

No one at LabCorp would talk on camera. The company eventually responded.

"The fax number has been corrected in our computing systems to prevent similar incidents in the future," the company said in a statement.

A Winston-Salem Health Care representative said that the company takes the security and confidentiality of patient information very seriously.

"We appreciate the caller's efforts to bring this situation to LabCorp's attention so that it could be addressed," a company representative said.

Winston-Salem Health Care said it is still investigating the mix-up.

The company eventually responded " we have corrected the fax number in our computing system to avoid similiar future problems."

This is such BS as this is the kind of thing going on in labcorp all of the time. They will never take any responsibility. The public needs to know is much more serious than just a wrong fax number. I have seen couriers spinning down blood, tubes left in courier cars over the weekend in the heat and later performed, results being given to wrong clients all the time. The list go's on and on!

You are absolutely correct. This stuff is not only regional. It's national. Results being faxed to the wrong faxes occur daily. It's just not made public. In regards to the above poster. True. LabCorp has scripted reasoning for any mishap. All the client wants are results. Most clients are not techs, therefore they will fall for any b.s. excuse just so long as they get that result and LabCorp bills the insurance.

I am working in the Florida division and have been asked by labcorp attorneys to lie in a federal case regarding whistleblowing issues. Is this something I can turn the attorneys into the BAR on? If anyone knows, please let me know.

I would think if you're asked to lie by ANY attorney in ANY case you can turn them into the bar. Talk about unethical behavior, especially when you're being sworn to tell the truth and nothing but the truth.

Of course if you really want to freak them out, you could agree to lie and when you're under oath and on the stand, have a change of heart and tell the truth! What a concept. Wonder how they would deal with that when unprepared??

Get in touch with the Office of Inspector General ( OIG ) in Washington, D.C. and tell them what you were asked to do. The OIG has fined LabCorp in the past for numerous reasons. Whenever a commercial lab hears OIG mentioned, they shake in their boots. The OIG can ban a laboratory from dealing with Medicare. If this happens most of the time the loss of that business would bankrupt the laboratory.

labcorp attorneys will lie at all costs. You should turn them into the Bar, OIG and demand to be deposed and put it on record the kind of lies they are trying to get you to say. You should be protected as a witness in a federal case. They will wait 6 months and find a reason to get rid of you. Go see your own attorney and start documenting everything. Start looking for another job. Why would you want to continue working for a bunch of liars anyway?

Sorry, I dislike what LCA does like many employees. I do not believe an attorney from the company told them to lie.

Limit information without lying, focus on what helps their case, and ignore details that hurt their case. Welcome to the American legal system. No injustice having your attorney fight for you. It's the other guys’ job to argue their point; you don't have to help them!

These people don't make that much to ruin their future as a attorney in our court systems.

Hey Mark I hate to say it but you are clueless on what you are saying. If you are a DEFENSE attorney going against LabCrap working for the OIG or someone who can report LabCrap to the OIG you will get 30% of the recovered dollars. For example in the 90's NHL and LabCrap were fined millions of dollars for fradulent billing. In fact the President did Federal time. If LabCrap is fined, lets say $10,000,000 and they are found guilty, which has happened in the past, the law firm collects $ 3,000,000.00. Any questions?? If it is a QuiTam procedure, the attorneys and the whistleblower can collect TRIPLE damages. Is there anything you do not understand??

Hey smart guy, the QuiTam only makes payment to the person or persons that filed the complaint; not the law firm. A payment is also only made IF the person filing the complaint had nothing to do with the wrongdoing. The laaw firm if any was used may collect a fee. Most are filed directly to the government and payment is made in full to the whistle blower.

Back to the point I first commented on. No company attorney would tell a person to lie and put their future as an attorney at risk; not a single one. The company can go down before they would put their butt on the line.

Next time you want to feel important stick with the conversation at hand.

Parker and Poe attorneys
"aka" Mark-

we have spoken to outside legal and yes, "tampering" with a witness is a criminal offense in any federal law suit. Trying to convince key witnesses in a federal case to change their testimony is considered punishable and you could all lose your legal license to practice law forever. Further, we have made labcorp attorneys aware of your "dishonest behavior" and since they continue allowing it, they to are liable.
