Strike while the coal is hot and move on to the next account. This has worked for me for years and years. Esoteric tests may help you get in thr door and or bump your number but think about it......when was the last time you sold a $10k or greater account vs upsell any given account by $10k using new tests? No true sales rep would argue this point.As the previous poster stated, someone else who doesn't understand the lab business. Instead of everyone stealing each other's accounts, how about SELLING new tests? What a novel idea? That's why the business isn't growing. You steal from LCA, who steals from Quest, who steals from Bioreference, and on and on and on. Then again, that would require the sales reps to actually know something about the tests they are trying to sell.

This philosophy and attitude is why Quest is hemorrhaging revenue! If you nderstood what you were selling, you'd have no difficulty selling new tests to your existing accounts. As usual, you're looking for the easy way out. Selling newer, higher-reimbursed tests is how you grow. You're not going to make it selling Hematology, Chemistry and Basic Metabolic Panels that are reimbursed at less than cost.
You have to do both. Solicit new accounts and grow the ones that you have. Unfortunately, Quest is doing neither!

If you know your accounts and the needs of those accounts, then you will also know what upsell opportunities exist within them. It's called account management.

Im more legitimate then you will ever know.My business is far from being in the tank. Please tell me what wonderful tests you speak of. It doesn't work. Top sales reps don't drive their numbers via tests. It's that simple! If you have an $8-$10k monthly quota you can't make it selling tests! You have to sell new business. I mention VAP and NMR because they are prime examples of various labs wasting marketing and sales time over the past 8 years. I have been forced to sit and listen to presentations on these tests no less then a dozen times. I agree there are somes tests that will help BUT new sales out weighs upsells.Who would sell VAP? Seriously?

Someone else who doesn't understand the lab business. It's not JUST about winning new accounts. It's also about growing the accounts you have. That means understanding their needs and looking for opportunities to introduce new, higher reimbursed testing options. That requires a knowledge of those esoteric assays that will provide the customer with enhanced diagnostic insights.
Isn't it also about retaining your current client base? What's the point of selling and growing at the front door if you're hemorrhaging and dying out the back door?
