Hate this job....love the money.

so, you traded one form of corporate slavery for another, with probably more stress and a little more money.

good for you.

better move is to start an insurance/real estate business or another business that you can call your own.

just saying.

I kinda sounds like he is building his own business. Read it again, "Building his pipeline". Sounds very much just like Insurance or Real Estate...Build Build Build.

Now go back to your pathetic life as a Pharma Rep Slug and kiss up to you childish DM.

64 year old ex-pharma rep here...not from AZ though, but the reason I am writing on this board is because there are really good comments here...

I am retired now, after a 34 year "career" as a rep... Have more than enough money as I have no kids and very aggressively saved and invested during all those years...

Bored as hell after doing several projects in and around the house. Tried to get back into the workforce, applied to 60 different jobs that I could easily do, but did not get a single response back. I am not complaining or whining, just saying what is happening. And it's happening in this economy. Not even a response from Lowes or Home Depot which have tons of unfilled openings for months and months. Part of this may be my age, part may be that recruiters are turned of when they see my last income of 150,000 a year.

But may be all of this is a blessing, forcing me to do something on my own...If I don't land a job by December 31, I will start my own carpet cleaning business. With an investment of 32000 I can have a little van and all the equipment I need. Even if I only work 30 hours a week, it would be worth it. Yes there is competition, but my area is very populated, but I think I can make it go.

Pharma used to be good 30 years ago. Now that hospitals and large insurance companies buy clinics and clinic systems it has become a nightmare for the reps. These organizations have closed their doors to reps. In my case at the end, it was so bad that by Tuesday afternoon I was done with my route. And it will only get worse. At least in my area, it has become a career killer...Can't recommend this as a satisfying career.

Probably should have mentioned this in my post, but I already bought two multi-unit buildings. The real-estate business is my side gig and it’s going well so far. To reiterate my point about getting out of pharma and into MedDev capital, I wouldn’t have had the cash to buy these buildings without making the move.

I spoke with a retired rep I respect a few days ago. His advice is to start a business while working for pharma. The job has plenty of freedom where this is possible. Hopefully you can grow the business before you are laid off. He suggested coin operated laundry or a storage facility. He also mentioned a coin operated car wash business. I've always been interested in real estate I do know the construction business so I'm thinking of flipping houses. I'm in my mid 20's and with the blessing of my family I'm going to go this route. I was also told never to tell anyone in pharma about your side business. People will stab you in the back to make themselves look good. Any other ideas about side businesses????????

I actually had 2 side businesses going at the same time when I was in pharma years ago, making about equal to what I was making with my full-time gig at the time. I would’ve stabbed myself in the eye with a pencil if I wouldn’t have had those side gigs, they kept me sane all those years and help me deal with the insanity of the pharma world.

Find something you enjoy that you would want to do for the rest of your career, and just make it a side gig. Enjoy it. Then work your crap pharma job 15 hours a week for the benefits.

This thread is very useful. I hope a lot of people read it and pay attention. I became a rep in 2003, in my 40s and after already establishing a career in healthcare. LOVED the money, loved the freedom, loved the car, and actually loved many of my offices and docs. After 10 years with the same company, upper management changed, we launched a shit drug and they screwed with my territory, essentially setting me up to fail. I chose to leave rather than get PIP'd for low Rxs on the shit drug. That took me to wound healing center sales, then home health sales. Horrible, both of them. Went back in to healthcare (kept my license active the entire 11 years) and I couldn't be happier. Stress -- 99% gone. Also gone are days of driving around getting nothing but rejection, ride alongs with a dumbass of a DM, carting food around, busy work at nights.......and yeah the big salary. But guess what?

My happiness and self worth taking care of patients and teaching students at the local college is all worth the stupid pharma money.

Believe me, there is life after pharma. And to the 25 year old OP, either listen to the other posters and invest in the side gig, or get the hell out before you turn 40 and realize you have wasted your mind and your life as a pharma rep.

I've only been with AZ for about a year. When I started I thought I was the luckiest guy in the world landing this gig. Now I hate this job....the micromanagement, the silly metrics, conference calls, feeding the cows, lack of respect from docs...it goes on and on. Instead of quitting to find new employment I love the money and benefits I made here. I'm 25 years old and I sold out. I hate myself for it but don't have the balls to do anything about it. Here it is Monday and almost 11:30AM and I am still at home. I hate the thought of this job. OK, I know I will get a lot of negative posts and be laughed at. Anybody got some advice I can use to clean up my worthless life?
Frankly, I'd miss the sex. Self-esteem issues rampant from the non-stop rejection of powerful men(MDs) generate a charged environment that is truly a fish-in-a-barrel scenario locally and at meetings. after NSM, I need a vacation. Sad wives, frustrated single ladies dating serial douchebags. I'm here for ya, baby. check out the abs on your way down!

What a shame. Long time retiree here. I started in pharma in the early 70's one year out of college. At that time all pharma companies had one rep in each territory. No lunches. Majority of calls were sit down calls. Doctors and their staff treated you with respect and you were highly valued. It was the best sales job one could get and you were proud to be in this industry. Following the merger, everything changed and none for the better. So sad to read about this young man and his dilemma. I still have many friends here and I hope they survive until retirement.

Yes, and every year it got worse and worse in this industry. Total shit-show now!!! Doctors work in group practice where clinic manager control everything, NOBODY values you!!!

OP sounds like they want more of a career that what pharma can provide..great time to switch OP.

..a lot of posters have fallen into the golden handcuffs... been in pharma too long, money pretty good, know how to "manage" their day, take the good with the bad, hope not to get laid off, very hard to transition out to new career with mtge. kids, ex-spouse etc.. nobody ready to jump to a 100% commish job and brag to their old pharma buddies that have a real sales job now....that just builds the frustration you hear on CP....

Staying in pharma you diffidently need to enjoy the bonus time you get, save and/or get a side hustle to keep things interesting and always be prepared to get the corporate ax.

1. Save your money
2. Explore other career options including potential “side hustle”
3. Set a timed exit, say by 2022. It will take some of the internal pressure off if you know and commit to a timeline to be out.

This is a very difficult career to get personal satisfaction from. Money and bennies are great but you cannot put a price on personal self worth. You are in a good spot, good luck.

I am not the OP however since this thread was established I am entertaining the idea of building a side business. I've only been around two years and I find the job boring as hell but as many said, the money and benefits are great. I see older reps all the time carrying a bag who seem so beat up. I don't want this to be me. From what I read and hear, the corporate world sucks....it's not for me. My solution is to build my own business and work my ass off to be successful. I will take the next six months researching what business is right for me. I then will grow it while working at AZ. Hopefully I will be able to establish myself in the new business before the shit hits the fan. I would welcome business ideas to explore. Thanks in advance!!!

Don't know how to break it to you but if you think you can build a successful "side" business while working here you are dreaming. Grant it, you can uber drive or buy and sell real estate but actually building a real business takes 100% commitment. Likewise, being a great rep that builds some real credibility with their boss and with offices takes 100% commitment ( while there is no guarantee that you wont be cut...there is at least a chance of some longevity with some dedication). Keep in mind that close to 90% of start businesses fail as well. Bottom line is that if you half ass your job at AZ and you half ass your new entrepreneurial pursuit...there is a huge chance that both will fail. Take it from an old "beat up" rep...commit yourself to what you want in life and great things will happen for you.

_______________
You can also tell your 16-18 yr old child, "remember all those field trips/class parties/days off that mommy/daddy went to or stayed at home for," you can thank Pharma. It is the only gig I can think of that you can work bare minimum (albeit those hours are excruciating) and have flexibility to be a parent. You can also tell your now teenage child "you know the orthodontia, medical visits, broken arm/leg surgery, vision appointments, etc," that was because of mommy/daddy's Pharma job. I don't know about you but I didn't aspire to be a Pharma rep, but I did aspire to be involved in my children's lives, give them a nice home, and provide benefits that will take care of them in time of need. Oh, and future investments like 401K, stock options, RSU's, etc. aren't too shabby. Get over the fact that your work isn't in and of itself satisfying, but try to see that it, for some people, isn't about what you get out of the day to day work, but what it allows you to do outside of the job. Oh, and driving around in your Pharma funded vehicle while your kids drop goldfish and juice box straws down the seat cushions isn't a bad thing, either. Perspective, my friend.

AMEN!! Have done both. Made a ton more money in another industry and had absolutely ZERO life, way more stress, and NO time with my kids. None. DIdn't see my kids except for an hour before bedtime. Sure I was more "fulfilled" and didn't feel like a fraud, but nothing is more important than my wife and kids, so I'll happily drive around for a few hours and chat it up with a few offices, then go home. Freedom and family trumps ego every single time. Hard to see that at 25, so no judgement at all. There are other options out there, but this isn't the worst job ever. And I hate Mondays too. Good luck.

At some point the "Fraud" part gets old. You will see. Enjoy your kids while they are young it's time well spent and this job certainly provides you time. It's a good honest trade off. But as you move through your years you will understand that the "Fraud" part of this job gets to everyone and at some point you will want a job w/ a purpose.

I think you have some very valid points and have added to the thread. Your comments are appreciated!! I've seen too many excellent reps with long tenure forced out of this company and other pharma companies. For this reason I don't have faith that I would have a long career here. Also, the job is boring, the DM is a micromanaging paper pusher and the only TA worth working in is oncology which I cannot apply for!!!! I have a yyo wife and two kids and it would be very difficult to start a business without some income and benefits such as health care. For this reason, I will start my "side gig" in spite of the long odds against it. success.

Wow, thank you for creating this thread. I completely agree with you. I had the same situation and you know what ? I did the same thing. Because I didn't find another way out.

I got set up as an Uber driver in ‘20 with al the covid crap, and since I only work 1/2 day max Mon-Thurs — Fridays are all mine, and Mondays are really office/admin stupid sh!t since that’s all CBDs/DMs care about anyway — and now I pull down an extra $45-$50k driving my little beater car and I’m still done by 5. Trust me, you can do both. Just make sure you have cool counterparts. The good news is most of them are pretty lazy.
