GSK 15 question test

Per hour, the "contract" rep make more. I know that is hard of you to accept, but that is how smart adults evaluate compensation.

Sounds like the "manufacturer" company has you brainwashed good. Hopefully, you can get your mind wrapped around the idea that you work for yourself, not for a company.

The industry has changed and they don't care about anyone.

WTF are you talking about " per hour" I worked less with my last manufacturer job than this contract and made more. Also, I been with companies that I worked more than this contract.

I agree I have worked for both contract and manufacter positions. Obviously, I much rather work for a manufacter based on compensation, benefits, company perks etc. A manager will make your job miserable or tolerable doesn't matter if it's contract or manufacter. I am on this GSK contract and it's not terrible but nothing great. I am currently interviewing with other companies but this is a nice stop gap in the meantime and it's better than unemployment.

I just don't see the point of interviewing UNLESS you have an idiot manager.
You are not going to make much more with another opportunity, and there is not more stability.
I think this is why the management here is super nice to the reps, btw, because they know it would be smart to jump ship if they treat their reps like children.

I disagree 100% I inteviwed last week for a similar diabetes position and the salary is $14,000 more, much better bonus plan and company stock options

It is always a risk to jump ship if you have a good manager though. My strategy is to just ride it out (I have a great manager) until the contract ends OR if the manger is a r*****. Lots of retarded managers out there. That is the risk you take, for what? After taxes, you are talking about 200-300 dollars a week. You can save that by not eating out or only taking 1 vacation, instead of two. Also, the more you may make at another situation, the more hoops they will expect you to jump through. Either way, I can respect your fight to find a better situation. I just think you are being naive. You better know that the manager you will be working for is a good person to work for, because if they are not (and, face it, most managers working for the manufacturer are jerks), you are in for a world of hurt. Good luck.

I agree it doesn't matter how good the job looks it's going to depend on your manager. I have a decent manager with this contract but did have some idiot micro managers in the past with Inventiv contracts. I rather be in a manufacturer position but this will be alright as long as management stays like it is

I agree with this statement. I have had pretty bad managers at manufacturers who treated you like they owned you and ride alongs would make you want to just go work at McDonald's instead! I've been impressed so far at Inventiv. I hope it keeps up. I'd agree that mgmt. here would be smart to be nicer than usual, because most of us could easily jump ship if we wanted to and find something permanent. In a way, we are almost doing them a favor by staying. I doubt they want to spend the duration of the contract interviewing candidates for open territories.

I agree with you but most sales people always want to better themselves but when your on 5 contracts and not striving for something better is a little lazy to me

To YOU.
Maybe because you don't know crap about life or selling.

The top sales people in the world make much more than managers.

Remember this: those that can't do, manage. That is very true. Same with teaching. In my 20 plus year career, my guess is that about 1 out of 4 managers were very good at selling. The others were and still are social misfits with a bad work ethic. Everyone knows that its the reps that do most of the work for an organization and are the ones that move product. Everyone, except you, I guess.

You actually made my point. If you were so great at sales than you wouldn't have been on 5 contracts here. I am using the contract until something better comes along. I don't think this is a terrible gig but as a sales rep I just want something better and much more rewarding similar to my previous positions

You don't get it: There are not better opportunities. That is in your head. Look, if you get creative, then you can make MORE working here than getting micromanaged with another company. Trust me. I am not going to tell you how, because you have to figure it out for yourself. See, every "manufacturer" thinks they are the best, and working for them is a privilege. F That. Its about YOUR bottom line. Do what you want. Up to you. I have not worked on 5 contracts either, and this is my first, and I am happy with it. I guess you still are in the infant stage in your life, and like to drink the KOOL AID. That is fine, I guess. But, you have to come to the point and understand that we all work for ourself. The contract company, the manufacturer might want you to think they have your back, and that you have stability. But, there is no such thing. Its all smoke and mirrors. An illusion. I am done here. Good luck.

I worked for both and the bottom line is if you want to maximize your earning potential than you should work for a manufacturer. If you want to coast and make decent money and no room for advancement than a contract company is better

BS.

Manufacturer reps coast more because the PODS are bigger, and everyone wants the credit when it is going good, and back stab when it goes bad.

In the past, say 10-15 years ago, I would agree with you. Today, manufacturers are not stable and don't care about their people.

Today, contract is superior because it is more professional and no PODS for the most part.

I am happier here in contract more than my past manufacturers also. I was so tired of having to pretend like I wanted to one day be in management, when I just want to be a rep! But somehow that's a bad thing to say that you only aspire to be a rep. There were just so many silly leadership roles at the manufacturers where everyone was pitted against each other to see who was better, who could kiss ass more, and who could climb higher.

I like the fact that at contract, the expectation is to work hard, call on your offices, then go home and enjoy your life. Perfect for me. But I realize that's not the case for those who want to be top dog and need that affirmation.

One of the smartest posts I have ever read here. You get it. Good for you, and don't let anyone take that away from you.

These people that chase fantasies in this world lack the ability to think for themselves, and have ideas that people that don't want to move up the dark corporate ladder, are not ambitious or smart...these management whores are the ones that never could sell to begin with...worse, these are the ones that actually don't even like people and that is why they want to get into management so bad: because they don't have to build a relationship with the customer, on a week to week basis.

They are social misfits most of them, with no business sense. I would never hire most of them to run my business. Just look at them in the interview process...most are awkward, and lack the common decency to even follow up with candidates with a simple email (God forbid a phone call, that would be too socially difficult for these people). They are a strange, strange bunch, and if they work for a manufacturer, they are much, much worse. At least the majority of contract mangers are good, because they have been let go themselves, despite a great work ethic and accomplishments.

Contract mangers get it, most of them. The others are still buying into the game, and holding on to the idea that they are "leaders" and that they are actually superior business people in comparison...it is hilarious, but I think some of them are so brainwashed to actually think they are great at sales....when all they are, are order takers and corporate whores, who could never sell if their live depended on it. Most of them should have worked for the state, because they don't belong in sales, and these types were a major reason for the implosion for our industry in the last 20 years.

This is what we have out there, in leadership positions....people that think because they are managers, that they are leaders. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Thanks for the post!

Skill sets for being a good manager and a good sales person are different. Often times the best reps do not make the best managers. There is absolutely nothing wrong with not wanting to move up the corporate ladder and it does NOT mean that you are lazy! That statement is ignorant. And, by the way, it's "when you're on 5 contracts" not "your". Maybe you should take time to learn English before going for the promotion.

I don't see the problem with making a career out of contract. Hey, just staying employed continuously in this field is commendable in my opinion! If these jobs lasted for decades, I'm sure most would relish that. But they don't. As long as you are feeding your family and paying your bills, who cares??
