Embarrassed to be in pharma

Shame on you! You should be proud of what you do for a living. I've been doing this for 20 years and have seen a lot of change. IT WILL BE THE EASIEST JOB YOU EVER HAVE! Speaking of a job, you will be lucky to have one after the next wave of realignments and layoffs most companies are/will be going through! Time for you to get an attitude adjustment and learn how to win.........All Star. Probably haven't won any of these in your career with your weak personality.

I use generic and there is No scentific difference only generic is $4.00 and Brande drug is $50.00.
This industry is total rip off !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did you know the FDA allows for a 24% leeway when it comes to having the active ingredient in the generic drug? Did you know the bioavailability of the generic only has to be 85% of the active metabolite?

Did you know there would be no generics if there were no Namebrands first?
Did you know namebrands are studies and proven drugs and generics are not? If you want proven results take a namebrand. If you want to roll the dice take a generic.

...very similar to what I have been aware of for some time...
and why I discourage generic drug use in many situations.

Think of it this way: Do you want to use the same cell phone that you had 10-15 years ago? I bet no one you know still utilizes their cell phone from that long ago. Why not? The answer is that TECHNOLOGY HAS IMPROVED. The old cell phone ("generics") may still allow you to make calls, but the newer ones ("brand name") let you make calls as well as access the internet, get a GPS location, and have a camera--probably with better reception ("fewer side effects"). Newer IS better in many situations. I bet that almost every whiny little twit who loudly criticizes branded drugs has the latest and greatest cell phone (and every other modern electronic gadget). It's amazing where people choose to be cheap.

I still remember the pic of the white generic that entered the mouth and came out the other end white and intact :).

These percentages are not correct anymore. Go talk to a pharmacist and you will find out that generics are almost equal to the branded counterparts (somewhere between 95% - 100%)

Nope - you are incorrect. Some drugs are that close but Narrow Therapeutic brand drugs often compete with as many as ten different generics manufactured all over the world. The FDA allows the 25% difference in bio-availability which can virtually wreak havoc with a pts INR in the case of Coumadin therapy. This can mean the difference between that pt having a stroke or not. Now if you are talking sinus meds, pain killers and such - who cares! Pharmacists are PAID TO PROMOTE GENERICS BECAUSE THEY MAKE MORE MONEY! Do you live under a rock? They get more money from their companies to sell you the generic and they are not going to fill the brand unless it is requested.

Do you actually believe that pharma executives have any purpose other than selling pills regardless of benefit? How many me too drugs, isomers, metabolites, indications are created to extend patents and increase profits.

yes, their purpose is to line their pockets with excess ca$$h. And every pharma companies bullshit mission statement is "patients first" or some other similar laughable lie.

NO SHAME ON YOU

for wasting your one and only life in this bullshit industry. You chose to skate by with an easy job, easy to lie about your calls every day, easy to lie to your manager and co-workers, easy to lie to your family about what you actually do every day, so what does that say about you? You could have been legitimately helping people or your community, but chose to help yourself. Way to go.

You should be ashamed of yourself for being a sleazy snake-oil salesman, I don't care if you make above average money, you are the laughingstock of the medical community and bring absolutely NO BENEFIT to healthcare providers. They can all read a goddamn PI, so take your over-inflated ego out of your managers ass, where I'm sure its been solidly planted this whole time, and realize that you are a fool and a phony, and when the day comes (very soon) where not one single doctor's office or hospital will let a drug rep through their doors, maybe you'll figure it out, but probably not.

wow certain you are not a rep but I am and you nailed it. Thsi job is a complete joke and we all know it.

Here's my summary:

Patients, consumer groups, and all of you should be fighting loud and clear for continued DTC ads! We have more information about tires on our car than we do the medicines we put in our bodies. It is outrageous that doctors think they should know it all, prescribe medicines in their short hand, and be resentful of answering questions. Last I checked, I pay that doctor to take care of me and I have every right to know as much as possible about my care. Why should I accept amoxicillin if I have a sinus infection when I have great insurance and no time to 'come back if it fails'? Why should I get a prescription for an allergy medicine only to learn later that it causes drowsiness, preventing me from driving? Doctors are not gods and you own your body. It is your right to know all there is to know about medicines available to you.

There is nothing 'sleazy' about ED ads. They shouldn't cause anymore embarrassment than ads about women's hygeine products. How many men would have spoken to their doctors about ED if they didn't know there was something to help them? It is the most embarrassing subject they will broach with their doctors and ED can ruin marriages.

Those who claim reps don't add anything and doctors can read PIs, well, yes they can. But they don't. Doctors know a broader range of information than any sales rep will. However, you know more about the class of drugs and disease state it treats than many doctors (if you're a decent rep). You have the most current information on drug interactions, new warnings, and insurance coverage. If reps are good and there is one per product and if doctors will take a few minutes to listen, reps serve a great purpose.

This industry was great once and reps were well respected. We will return to that as the cuts continue and once we reach a sane number of reps. If none of this consoles you, than just have faith - many of you who are 'embarrassed' to be in pharma won't have to worry about it much longer.

There is a sense of security right now. Say things are great for the next year or two, then you get laid off what are you going to do? What is a Pharmaceutical rep qualified to do? Open a catering business? Think of the future. We get use to this high salary free car for doing nothing, then when you have to go into the real world you’re going to wish you made the move years earlier. I wish I never got into Pharmaceutical sales I get stupider every day dropping off samples like UPS thinking were so high and mighty because we are in suits and go into doctors’ offices? They hardly talk to us, on top of that how ridiculous do we look bringing baked goods in for the office in a suit, it’s a joke. No more dinners, once a month lunch how the hell do we sell? We don’t were there to market and keep the office staff happy. Which brings me to another point what is with these dumbass managers who ride with us they are the most useless pieces of garbage, they do nothing at all except get in the way, most offices don’t even want you to bring in a manager. I thought getting into this line of work was prestigious, I thought people were going to be so of the best and the brightest, god were my eyes opened. I have been with many companies and they are all breeding grounds for laziness, if you’re not lazy when you get here you will be.

Or I guess you can go on believing Larry R that we truly are teachers to the doctors.

I have been working as a Pharm. Rep. for over 3 years. I was convinced by friends in the industry to get out of my national sales job and get in to the cushy, easy lifestyle of being a pharm. rep. I have been wanting to get out for the last 2+ years. I cannot stand the industry and I hate being treated like a gopher in the offices. I know people who like this job and more power to them but for me, I miss being respected by my clients. I wish someone would of warned me when I was hired but everyone around me was either a rep. or clueless what went on with this job. I want to get back into marketing or something creative but I dont even know where to begin. I keep hearing reps that are quitting and going into a completely different career path and I'm envious of them. Also, I wont miss the winters drudging thru snow with a detail bag frost bitten to have a sign up "no reps".

agree this job is a joke, but the bigger joke is the asshole mgrs, they act like they have something important to offer to your ride along. they on't even know their own head from their ass- how can they offer me any good advice on my territory?? they can keep all of their coaching comments and stick it. I haven't heard one useful piece of information from my DM in a ride along---most are co Kool Aid tag lines-.
They also expect to see a full detail to each DR- no matter how much time he has. When was the last time yu actually did a full detail to a dr with a comercial message and marketing piece?? What a joke? And then of course you have to listen to the critique how of how you need to improve-I think the DMs are trained to spew out the same co coaching message after each call.
---the whole job is such a joke-- if this job were not such a game!!!
These co's really could reduce costs by eliminate alot of DMs---- they really don't need them! they are worthless! The reps are the ones that bring in the $, They should reduce DMs by 1/2- and reduce ride alongs to only 2 per year. This would make the co's much more efficicent-- but of course no one in any level of mgt has a brain.

good post...i always wondered why these companies treat the DMs as gods...they are so useles...the job is a joke

Here's an idea for all of you drug reps who find it difficult to do your job and be seen by a physician. Why don't you start trying to be a resource to them instead of just a detailer or sample dropper. Take pride in what you are doing...that is if you have any pride in what you are selling...and find out what they need from you. Create a way for them to talk to you on their own time through your own message board or something. They can drop questions or comments to you when they are online and you can respond back when you are...it doesn't have to be real time.

For example, if you are peddling diabetes meds why not ask a doctor for five minutes to talk about what you could do for him/her that would make their job easier. What are the three biggest obstacles they face when dealing with diabetic patients or patients that are border line. Then figure out a way to help them. Maybe it's sponsoring a health fair at a community center or place of worship if the doc tells you they are having trouble reaching patients because there is a trust issue.

Ok, it's more work on your part but if you really believe in what you do isn't it worth it? My clients are busy too and don't have time to sit with me while I rattle off all the features and benefits of my service, but they have all the time in the world to talk to me when I'm helping them solve their problems.

I can't wait to hear the flack I get for this one...but understand this comes from many conversations with docs and nurse practitioners who tell me constantly they value the information drug companies can provide. Real info that helps them do their jobs.

You are a true professional. I would love to talk to you.

This is so true. I used to be such a go getter. I graduated top of my class from a very prestigious universtiy, landed a high powered marketing job, and switched to pharma when I got laid off a few years into my career. Now I get up at 9:30 every day, take frequent naps and drink all the time. The icing on the cake is that I am actually a top ranked rep!!!
