Can we chill with the field rides? Unreal managers are still going to “meet” reps to try and look busy. Go stay home like everyone else and document a field day. Losers.
Their outdated model is from the 1980s. Still, here we are. No innovation.
Not only that, it destroys motivation to be micromanaged. I used to think they hired me because I’m an expert salesperson, with years of success to prove it. Now I know they don’t trust me to sell anything or make any business decisions at all. And….they do seem to trust my manager who pisses people off everywhere we go.What having an ABL in your territory with you or one of your partners every 3 1/2 days isn't helpful. We lose business just so he can check a box. The offices hate him. It is funny when the doctors come into a lunch and see him there. They turn around and walk out. Hallway details if he is there I am lucky to get 30 second where is if I am by myself it will get a couple of minutes. Every rep on out team has at least 20 years of experience with stacks of awards. Makes no sense hiring highly skilled good reps then you micro manage them with a worthless babysitter.
Increased number of field rides and excess coaching brought to you by the head of Customer Engagement. To the 90’s we go
Agree. Pretending business as usual while we await our fate is insane.
Riddle me this: How do your cut your chances of getting in front of a Doctor in half??
Answer: By having a second person standing next to you when you approach the receptionist.
Whether it's a DSM, a regional trainer, or a new rep you're mentoring... These days, bringing a second body into an office only hurts your chances of getting to talk to a doc. They barely tolerate reps these days. Pharma sales culture is totally lacking in self-awareness.
They will never learn. Pharmaceuticals are in capable of abandoning the old business model. Managers bring absolutely positively no value to the table whatsoever. All they are is an extra burden that the reps have to bear. Offices have absolutely no use for them, and the majority of the time the reps either have to do damage control afterwards, or give the office a heads up that they’re coming in with their field management idiot. Managers are a waste of money, resources, and time.
My manager is a mall cop on a power trip. The more you push back, the more my manager flexes by scheduling field rides and meetings at bad times, like right before any vacation days you have scheduled or Friday afternoon. It has just killed motivation.Hold your ground with your ABL. Ask what value they bring to a field ride. I manage my manager and dictate their time with me. If sales are good little they can do.

As have many of us. I doubt too many people need your advice on HOW to do a ride along, the post was annoyed that we are doing so many 2 day ride alongs. I’m sure we all have even worse things even in our own lives, let alone in the Ukraine, but that doesn’t make these incessant field rides any more pleasant. Since you use past tense, I’m going to guess that means you aren’t currently enjoying your manager for a couple days every few weeks. Or perhaps you have a manager who makes it pleasant- I don’t and many at Novartis don’t. What I can say is it has been over 20 years since I worked for a company that had so little faith in my ability to sell they needed to send a manager to micromanage and criticize me all day for two days every month. And, before you say it, my numbers are great…..I think….at least what data they will let me see….I think I killed it last trimester…..but that remains to be seen…..are they going to pay me?I have been doing this gig for two decades. Launch fast, stay in the running for Presidents Club, keep your customers happy with lunches and samples. Play plenty of golf (always use sunscreen, tanned reps look bad) and from then on work 3-4 days a week. I always looked forward to ride-a-longs. Worked managers butts off. Breakfast at 7:00, in the field til 6:00 pm. If you can’t make money and be happy doing this you need go live in Ukraine and really have something to complain about.
