Conned Altrus

Word on the street is that deal just fell through to sell ES div. Looks like things won't change for the time being. Same old DM and SM bullshit! As they continue to drive this Div down the toliet, they won't be able to give it away.

haha, good thing I ended up passing on an offer in this division. Did my homework and did not like the absolute disaster things look to be in right now.

So let me understand this extremely late strategic entry into the vessel sealing space from a thermal perspective. In order to get usage, we have to giveaway capital for FREE (while Covidien sells FORCE TRIAD for the most part), and we're generating $2.4M annualized based upon our best ever quarter of $600K. That's a whopping 1/2 of 1% (0.005) of Ligasure's projected annual sales not even considering Gyrus/SurgRx. Roll in the endomechanical market, suture, etc....and we suck. There's no other way to say it.

Our capital was down 17% this year. No wonder, we're all pushing on the proverbial Altrus string and starving. Yes it's a cool product but does it solve existing problems? No and there's no data to suggest so. Does it have any other value added clinical benefits? No and there's no data to suggest so. Are there any supply chain benefits? No.

Considering a job here selling ES Altrus but these reviews of the product and the quotas scare me. I'm coming from B2B so I'm not sure if this is a good step up or should I pass and wait for the next medical job? Which by the way is very rare to come along.

Breaking into device is tough, so I understand where you're coming from. Would you only sell Altrus, or would you have the rest of the ES bag as well? If it's only Altrus, you're gonna have a tough time for a multitude of reasons that are probably all detailed in the posts above. But, if you think you can make it work for 12 to 18 months, and the rest of your job history is solid, it's probably worth considering because of the experience and contacts you will gain. Good luck!

I would agree with this post. You will have the entire ES bag, smoke, argon, pads, pencils, and generators. ES has started hiring med device reps and have not seen a b2b rep in a while. I am surprised your in the process.

Don't do it. Walk away!! This is the worst division of Conmed. The current leadership has taken what once was a player down the shitter! How they have gotten away with it the past five years is the biggest question in Conmed. There is no future here, your way better off looking into any other Division but ES!

Here's some facts on Altrus. Two years post-launch and based upon 2012 analyst conference calls this product generated approx $1.9M in revenue. If we were privy as a sales team to the development cost, distribution time (in evaluations, free samples, expenses), marketing costs, indirect costs due to distraction from the core products, etc....this would be the absolute worst product - driven non-strategic launch in the history of the company. Combined with flat revenues over the past six years according to SEC filings...hmm you decide.

You forgot the cost of hiring an entire field sales force (twice) capable of selling Altrus. You should Google cost of hiring a sales person. You will be stunned! Multiply 100 reps over the past couple of years by this number. It will take several thousand years of Altrus sales to cover the sales turnover costs, let alone all the other cost you've mentioned. Next to the "Edsel" biggest boon doggle in corporate history!

DM is already riding off into the Sunset. Since SM was spending 90% of his time trying to find another job outside of Conmed but has found out nobody wants his sorry ass he has been trying to suck up to whoever he can at Conmed so he won't be shit canned. The damage is alreay done. They could bring in Jack Welch and he wouldn't be able to clean up
this fucking mess.

Heard this is close to launch and people claim it's a game changer.

ConMEd has known since last year that this product would not do well. They intentionally let centenial go out with it so they would fail so they would have reason to close it down. Linvatec prods will be next. ConMed doesn't manage people they let them fail and then act like they had no idea.

Conmed upper management thought it would be successful or they would not have put so much money into developing it. Problem is NO STRATEGY. They looked at market size and said "if we only get 10%" etc. Did not evaluate "how do we win". Too bad. Assumed with market presence and GPO's they could easily get small market share and grow revenues but did not realize that getting even small market share requires spending like they are going after 50% market share. Plus, 60 reps cannot compete with 800 (Ethicon Harmonic + Covidien Ligasure). Just too simple in strategy.
