Carnage: RIF 2011

So many top experienced Scientists (scientists who actually discovered new molecules during the real biotech heyday) with decades of knowledge were shown the door today.....a huge brain drain that does not bode well for the "future" pipeline....whatever that vision may be.[/

Shocking on who was let go in TO PS. and MK survives? doesn't bode well for PS

Is MK exec dir of PS in TO????

If Amgen was a science based company as it claims, the people need to ask for the data that shows companies can cut their way to success. A colleague sent me an excellent article recently that addressed just this - RIFs don't work. You end up letting go people who challenge the status quo and are left with a bunch of people with their heads up each others asses. How many of us have bosses who challenge their boss? Finance has made a seriously flawed assumption in that they think they have the caliber of people to actually pull off hitting the numbers announced to Wall Street. Those that can actually deliver and collaborate are frustrated and spend time looking for jobs. Case in point - other than hot air what have these "Productivity Initiatives" produced?

The last sentence of post #30 explains the logic behind these moves... Then it might be wise for each of us to consider our future with the company and which side we are likely to end up on down the road.

AWA Oncology was gutted. So many of this industry's most talented and brilliant scientists were dismissed yesterday. Their contributions were enormous and they can NEVER be replaced. It was absolutely heartbreaking to watch and I will never feel safe at this company after witnessing that. My heart goes out to them.

Sorry to hear this. Know a lot of good people at Amgen. Have a friend who got the ax. Too much crap going around these days. Severance should have been better. Amgen just like the rest of them has ample cash, just don't want to spend it on people. Would rather throw people out in the street in a bad market after they busted there butts for them.

Welcome to the real world. NOBODY below EVP has been safe since KS arrived.

In Amgen a long...long..time ago, you worked more than you job description, worked hard & played hard...fast foward to today to change and suddenly after years of positive recognition and awards presented to me I was presented today with another award. MY WALKING PAPERS. I know...its not personal its a scarifice for Upper Managment to make the numbers. Is it patient 1st or Stock holders?

It is not patients first, nor stockholders first. It's assuring that the directors and above at Amgen can continue to get paid and rewarded well. The stock has been dead at Amgen for over a decade. At a normal company, Kevin and most of his lackeys would have been canned in 2005 at the latest, yet he/they still exists and are rewarded extremely well. Amgen has no need for all the lawyers it is paying, and all the lobbyists- what have they done to protect the bottom line and the shareholders? Nothing, but they will continue to be untouched. Amgen is a joke that pays 18K people pretty well, but motivation continues to get lower and lower. Too bad it is not a well run company, or it would be paying 30K people really well with high motivation from most all its associates.

You have to wonder how Kevin could sell his soul and heart away to get worldly goods and comfort. That is, if he ever had one. To dump all of those good people out into this job market while taking a $21 million salary. He will get his in the next life. Maybe he will be re-incarnated as a dung beetle. That would be appropriate. Or maybe too good. How about an intestinal bacterium, like E. coli?

It's really sad how I have been watching Amgen loose all its luster and value as the world's most important biotech company. Many of the original, genuine, knowledgeable employees are being let go after they literally gave up most of their lives for the company. It's really sad how I have been watching how Kevin Sharer has been getting richer and richer along with his cronies. I feel sad about all those who are now left out in the cold during a horrible economical time. I wish all of them and myself, to hang in there, continue doing the best you can and search for a job or work on your own to get ahead. I believe in Karma and know that all those who have destroyed other peoples' lives will receive their share in due time. May God protect us all!

E coli and other enteric bacteria serve the host well. They are above being compared to KS.

Hope it does, they have made the place into a rat hole, this place is in the middle of no options...they go and spend 500 million to outsource IS to IbM then they spend another 500 million to bring it back, seriously if other companies can manage outsourcing IS why can't we? The CIO Dmckenzie approved the outsourcing and now she brings it back in-house...wastage to the nth degree today we RIFd stellar scientists and have the so called leadership teams bring us down seriously what has DMcken contributed to our bottom line? Why did the board approve the reverse transition of IS? It is OK to flush the Amgen shareholders and staff livelihood down the toilet...and it's OK to RIF real contributors to our innovation WoW! Am I missing something?

WoW! Am I missing something?????? Yup....PMckenzie
