Car choices are horrible here!

Can someone please explain for q company that preaches work and family balance, why we only have the options of a small car, equinox or ford transit? I am 6'5 and can not fit into the car or equinox, and when I talked to fleet I only had the transit option. My car is so bare that I barely have AM/FM radio, and that hardly works. I have no bluetooth, no USB, (and since our phones lock down that means I can't hear music at all during the day) a heater that doesn't work (I am in the midwest) the side doors have to be opened automatically and half the time the doors won't even slide, and no power seats with only one option to adjust the seat. I don't even have an airbag!! We live in our cars and this is the only option I have. Other companies give many different options for cars, and even allow rea to pay for SUVs or minivans. Why is it that we only have 3 options, and that is it? This is a company that likes to say how diverse they are and working parents are valued here, but what if that parent has 4 kids, then what?

When will this company start valuing us in the field? As much as the summer week is nice, how about also giving us options for cars? It is so embarrassing every time I see another rep in the field.

And before anyone tries to say something rude, the car is considered part of our benefits. I pay every single month for this benefit. This option is not a benefit because it isn't practical or even safe!

Whine, whine, whine.... can we expect anything else from entitled, self centered reps who do nothing and want the world? If customers knew Reps make as much money as they do, I think things would change drastically. If upper management knew how little access reps have, how little Reps do, and acknowledge this whole scheme is smoke and mirrors, they would reduce Sales Rep head count and whiners like you would be out the door.

Sweet Jesus, you are either 60+ years old, a “millenial” (making all of us other “millenials” look bad), or a working mom who wants three work-from-home days a week. Actually, now that I think about it, you are a 40+ white guy who has resisted his manager’s advice to learn new skills to ensure job security, or you’re a 22-year-old intern whose parents work here and is expecting a P3 job before the ink on the diploma is dry. Actually, I don’t even know anymore. You sound like every other sad shmuck at this company who grew up in Indy and saw a Lilly job as a ticket into the “big fish in the little pond” aristrocracy that is Indy and Carmel. Anyways, welcome, you’ll fit in perfectly here, we’re all miserable!

No. I am a grown man. A grown man who has worked at other companies that give reps car choices. We PAY for the use of our cars. We LIVE in our cars. It is not entitled to have heat in my car when it is 40 below.

It is not entitled to expect a benefit of the company that I work at be a benefit.

The car benefit is no different than the company 401K match program.

This is no different than looking at health insurance premiums and coverage. For example, Lilly's insurance costs 3x what other pharma companies monthly costs are, not including a ridiculous out of pocket maximum for the year. Our health insurance is one of the worst in the industry. Does that also make me entitled because I am not happy with this benefit either?

The car is SOLD to our as a benefit and a part of our package. Lilly is known to underpay their reps. Even the recruiters, managers, trainers, everyone KNOWS this.

So yes. My car choice matters. It is a benefit. It is part of my overall package. It is one of the main points that was stressed to me.

So no I am not entitled because I want a decent car option. I didn't say extravagant car option. I would be happy even with a minivan option at this point!!

While we are at it - I also want good healthcare considering we are IN health care! I do NOT want to pay 3x the basic industry standard for worst coverage.

And no, I am not going to be happy because of my salary. I, like all of you, have adjusted my life to the salary and am not going to apologize because I make the money I do. So all you left wingers can donate your paychecks since you should just be happy with making minimum wage or working for free!

Your compensation shortcomings are more than offset by the professional grade soccer field in Indy that is open to all employees free of charge. No need to thank us, just score a few goals to show your appreciation.
Your Leadership Team

Wah, wah, wah! STFU. If you don’t like what you get stop complaining or leave!

I’m with you on this one. The car choices are bad. I have 4 kids, so unlike others who just like to be negative and don’t actually face this issue, I get it.

I also agree with you on the healthcare. It is outrageously expensive. I compared mine directly with someone from another major pharma company and theirs was far superior in cost/quality. Ah well...

We should just be happy to have a job, right? Is that the idea? Have some dignity. Expect more for yourself. Btw, Ricks has a comp package of 14.4 M. Maybe a car that fits my family isn’t so much after all.

Truth is they sell you a lot of things when you get to Lilly. Everyone here is right, cars suck, insurance sucks blah blah blah. But to the millennial here posting. Just be quiet. You got hired because you are cheap. That is all. You think Dave ricks gives a flying wet fart what you think or do. You may be smart in some ways but you lack the resume to talk shit or offer any consistent insight. Just stop talking.

to the grown man..
if it’s so bad.. leave
Find a job where it’s so much better for you. Talk to your kids’ teachers.. ask about their cars.. insurance etc. maybe that Perspective will get you to shut your mouth
I am sick of the whining
Some people don’t have half of what you do

This is a great sequence of comments. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, start learning a computer language like Java, or Python. Then, go buy the car you want with an autopilot programmed from one of the following languages. Pharma salespeople are as dead as fried chicken. In 5 years, AI will decide what to prescribe or reimburse. What side of the fence will you people be on? You all have been warned.

To the people saying suck it up! Get a new job!

This is part of the job. Our car is part of our job. Our health insurance is part of our job. Our 401K is part of our job. Our pension is part of the job.

These are benefits. Most of you posting clearly do not understand the value of benefits. It isn't always about how much you bring home, but the total package.

Most of the other pharma companies value the benefit package. Many of the other pharma companies have pensions. Many have great vacation packages. Many have better healthcare. Many of the other companies have better cars. Many of the other companies understand our company car is our main vehicle. Lilly does not.

Our healthcare is one of the most expensive in the industry, and isn't that great. Our car choices suck. Some field people do not even get a company car if their area is large and they have to fly a lot. ( I know many managers that do not have cars) Our 401 and pension is the only standard benefits of the industry.

So again, the poster is correct. This company is far behind others in their benefits.

I agree with the original poster, the car choices (or shall I say lack thereof) are not only substandard but actually a liability. Wait until someone's child dies of heatstroke from being in the back seat of the Equinox with no air vents in the back seat. Additionally, the lack of ergonomic car seats will cause multiple back issues then you have an employee that will have to go on short term disability to deal with a bad back...only hurts the employee and LILLY.
When an employee is in a field position, they are essentially living out of their car and deserve a DECENT car... after all, as the OP stated, the car is part of the benefits and we are paying for the car, it's not FREE so we should have more choices. We should also have a choice to upgrade and pay out of our pockets if the car does not suit our needs.... not wants, that is the key word here. So to all you naysayers bashing this poor guy, wait until you get older and we will see how your needs change....none of is are immune and karma is a bitch!

I am older and I am sick of the bitching. Try a different industry and see how little you will get for anything. Leave if it’s that bad. Tired of the entitlement. Many companies make reps pay for their own car. Please . If it’s that bad, ask you kid’s teacher about their pay benefits and car! Then you might shut up

I am not a teacher dumbass and have paid my dues working in this industry for 20 years. I am not asking for a Mercedes or a Range Rover, merely what is an acceptable, safe and comfortable vehicle.....again, part of the benefits package is a car. Hence, due to the amount of time that is spent IN THE CAR, the company could at the minimum, offer the option to upgrade to a more suitable vehicle. Furthermore, as I said above, I am even willing to pay extra for the upgrade, just would like to see some more options. So where is this entitlement you are speaking of ????

Waaaaaaa!!! Waaaaaaa!!! Waaaaaaa!!!

People screaming entitlement either:

1.Are ok with some of the worst benefits in the industry.

2. Have never worked anywhere else so they don't know they have some of the worst benefits of the industry.

3. Don't understand the VALUE of benefits.

4. Are the perfect example of the people at Lilly and are the reason for the lack of benefits.

Whatever the reason, I agree with the posters that understand the reality of this company and the lack of choices.

And for people saying go be a teacher then - no. You are also part of the problem. With your thinking, are you saying that you donate your salary? Do you give away your bonus? Based off your logic, it is not right for you to make more than minimum wage. Do you understand how uneducated you sound?

No one is asking for a Rover, we just want options. The car here is not free. We pay for it. Other companies understand the NEED for field to have decent and SAFE cars. Other companies give multiple choices of cars to select from. Multiple companies give the option to upgrade certain features like a sunroof, or bigger vehicles like a full size SUV. Multiple companies even give the option of a car allowance and mile reimbursement.

Other companies VALUE and RESPECT their field reps, and understand we keep the lights on. Look around the parking lots and see the differences between us and other reps. Talk to them about their benefits. Ask about their car choices and how much they pay each month for it. Ask about their health insurance and how much they pay for it. Ask how many plan options they have for their health insurance. ( I guarantee they have more than our 2 with the same carrier) Ask about their overall benefit package.

It also is a HUGE liability to Lilly. The message to us in the field is we don't care about you and your safety. The message is we are going to punish you if you are over 6 feet tall and put you in a commercial vehicle with no vents. The message is exactly what some of the people on the post are saying - that field should be thankful that reps even have a car! Do you understand how that sounds? We are field sales people! We need a car to get from one office to the next. The car isn't a benefit that we should be thankful for, is a job requirement!

We pay for the use of our vehicle, but we don't have any options for our vehicle choices. We pay for the use of our vehicles, but I am paying for a car that barely has power locks. We pay for the use of our vehicle, but it isn't safe to have kids in the backseat because there are no vents.

These are facts. This is not entitlement. That is industry standard. This is a huge safety concern. This is a company liability issue.

Please do your homework on the definition of benefits. Please speak with other reps at other companies. Please educate yourself. You clearly have never worked at any other companies. Wanting industry standard benefits is not being entitled. Wanting to feel valued and respected is not entitlement. Expectations of my SAFETY in a vehicle that I am in ALL DAY is not entitlement.

The person in charge of fleet needs to understand the value of us in the field. They need to understand industry standards. They need to understand that it is a huge safety problem. They need to understand that we reps will gladly give up our free Sirius for car options.

Moral of my post:

It is NOT entitlement to feel safe. It is NOT entitlement to feel respected. It is NOT entitlement to want to be treated like an adult.

"value of us in the field"

Oh, please. It's an entry-level position that is scripted out for you. The position adds more overhead than value and will continue to shrink in importance. The Trump administration is increasing the pressure for us to drastically reduce prices. As a result, compensation and benefits will continue to decline. Lilly is not behind the industry when it comes to compensation; they are ahead of the curve. All of the pharma industry is heading in this direction. If your temperament can't handle it, you need to go elsewhere.
