Analyst: study shows new St. Jude wire problems

NEW YORK — A Jefferies & Co. analyst said Tuesday that a study appears to show new problems with the wires in St. Jude Medical Inc.'s implantable heart devices.

THE OPINION: Analyst Ray Denhoy said a study published in the journal Macromolecules suggests that the company's Optim insulation could erode more quickly than physicians expect. Denhoy said he still believes physicians will begin using other companies' products because of increasing concerns about the design and performance of St. Jude's leads, including its Durata wires, which are coated with the Optim material.

"The paper is sure to draw criticism for its methods and conclusion, but the publication in a peer-reviewed journal and the potentially damning conclusions lead us to believe it will find an audience," he wrote. Denhoy maintained a "Hold" rating on St. Jude shares and lowered his price target to $34 per share from $40.

In recent years St. Jude has withdrawn several types of leads, or wires that are used to attach a defibrillator to a patient's heart, because of concerns the silicone insulation on the wire could erode, increasing the risk of a malfunction.

Defibrillators are lifesaving devices implanted in the chest to correct dangerous heart rhythms, monitoring the heart for irregular beats and occasionally triggering electrical shocks that correct the problem.

The problems have already hurt sales of heart devices for St. Jude, and some analysts think the problems will spread to Durata, a newer wire with a different type of insulation. The insulation is called Optim, and St. Jude says the material "fuses the best attributes of silicone and polyurethane." The St. Paul, Minn.-based company has not disclosed any insulation problems with Durata.

The Food and Drug Administration has ordered St. Jude to collect data on patients implanted with Durata wires and Optim insulation.

On Friday a Citi Investment Research analyst cut his price target on St. Jude shares to $32 from $39, saying study data on safety of the two of the withdrawn leads is getting worse and the risk that St. Jude will also have to pull Durata off the market is growing.

THE STOCK: Shares of St. Jude Medical lost 18 cents to $36.20 in afternoon trading. The stock has lost 15.3 percent of its value since St. Jude reported its third-quarter results on Oct. 17.

BSX could have monkey's for reps and still take the #2 spot in the next year. Trust me, if rep quality were the measure of today's success, STJ would be out of business. You are on a sinking ship my friend. Enjoy the ride.

I owe my repeated success to the company I work for, MDT, and the leadership and quality of products that set the stage that I proudly get to walk upon each day. Yes, I perform my job responsibly and professionally each day but I clearly do not feel my sales are a direct reflection of "ME". The hard work, brain power, and packaging was done by many others before me, I get the pleasure and benefit of putting the bow around the package and delivering it. For whatever talents I bring to the table, well, that's just an added bonus to the process that was pre-established.

For those reps who think they are "Magicians" and that sales wouldn't occur without their wave of the magic wand...well, it's a pretty humble dose of reality when you can't prevent the errosion of your sales (or your leads..haha).

You see, just like you are not responsible for your erroding sales, you can't actually claim responsibility for building sales without either crediting or blaming the company you work for.

Hence, my "Monkey" reference towards STJ reps, in that, it's irrelevant what form of homo erectus you choose to employ, with respect to the current issues surrounding Riata/Durata, the rep, in whatever form, has no impact on the current or bleak future of STJ. I am simply saying STJ reps are meaningless at this stage of the game regardless of their percieved image of their past accomplishments and value they felt they once provided to the sales cycle.

BSX is the one company that can see immediate benefits from the ultimate demise of STJ but they will either need to hire big time STJ reps that can drag business or figure out a way to attract quality reps.

U people crack me up. This is quite entertaining. Had bsc handled things like stj their share would still be 40+ %. Has nothing to do w the reps. Now that stj is being found out will you now blame the reps? This thread has been hijacked by ignorance.
 






Seriously, are the Lawyers and AOR the only ones interested in this thread?

STJ will adapt no matter the results. Suppliers come and go. This supplier can easily be replaced (probably already done.). The recall and latest FDA inspection are the biggest variables for STJ's future. This lawsuit is a non factor for STJ.

Are you saying STJ is maintaining MS and stock price? This is taking on the same scale of demise as Guidant/BSX. It's not the Reps fault at all but they need to act fast to either swing their business and join a competitor or I don't know.

BSX, Guidant, and STJ can't blame the Reps for giving them only crap product to sell. At this point, only the executive leadership can save STJ. Unfortunately, the leadership has failed them miserably.

Not really. Just a realization that BSX reps can't sell and are desperate for Durata to go bad so they can make some cash. It's there whole premise of the thread. BSX rep=Losers

Are we dealing with 5 year olds here? Stj u now have EVERY lead in your bag that has a critical flaw and all you can say is "their team sucks. We don't like them". This attention to deflect is pathetic. When you lose every lead from your bag and sales tank we will grab the top talent and their business. How ignorant and childish to say he BSC reps are losers. So when you are 25% to plan next summer we are smart enough to know its due to inferior and unreliable products, a factor the reps have no influence on. Grow up and start working on your resume. I'm serious.

Dude stj doesn't work in my town. Why? The phys are well informed and have seen firsthand what happens when u implant Riata/atlas/Durata and those famous 3 year ppm's. so why in the world would you allow anyone to have a Durata implanted in them?? Would you allow your parent, spouse, or child to have a Durata? You've known for years your leads are falling apart and you brag on err that u r still implanting deadly products. Just wait until EVERY LEAD IN YOUR BAG IS RECALLED. it's going to be soon optim boy. Count on it.

Btw I do sell everyday. That's why I've had success. But I must ask why you feel compelled to take up for stj especially on a day that marks the end of stj as we knew it (albeit the success lasted only about 3-4 years). Seriously all stj reps I know save 1 are keeping their mouths shut and their head down.
