Sure its made up now, but that is how corporations finally scalp their shareholders of all remaining value and finally escape their pension promises. The bond holders get the remaining equity and the government pension guarantee fund is left responsible for the pensions at about 30 cents on the promised dollar. It could happen at some point. The airlines are mostly all still in business, but most of them have gone bankrupt several times for these very same reasons. So don't be so sure it will never happen. If you had grown up in a country where there is no capitalism, you would yearn to escape to America. Those places put up barriers to keep the citizens from leaving. It may happen, and if it does, odds are there will be a system in place to help out the people affected. The best way to handle the inevitability of corruption when money is involved, is to place your trust in no one other than the only Man who ever lived that will never disappoint us.

If you think it can't happen here then just ask the 118,000 GM pensioners who just learned that their pensions are being restructured to save GM $34 billion and this from a company where the government has a majority controlling interest. I do think it can happen here, that was the whole point. The airlines showed the way many years ago. GM is now giving their white collar workers a dose of what their union workers got two years ago with a buyout, not bankruptcy. All contracts and pension obligations are dissolvable in corporate bankruptcy. The various stakeholders all get a real haircut. The lump sum is a safer way to go, although it does come with some sacrifice in the potential total payoff. If you invest well, you might make that loss back, after the funds are actually in your possession. Funds not yet in your possession are at risk through other mechanisms.
