Bad Managers at Ortho McNeil

It's all a matter of degree. Here at Pricara, when I think I've had a bad manager then the next DM turns out to be WORSE. And I've had plenty. I've been with 3 major corps and I've never seen such seflishness or BS in management as I have in this JnJ division. There's no honesty or compassion. It's very sad. I would love to have a caring leader guiding the district. It would make our 2010 goals easier to achieve. We need supportive sources not a DM that fails to make eye contact or care (a manager that only cares about how they look to their boss, how much they make -- Self-serving). It's sad.
Ditto. Well said. Oh but OZ I think I'm being below the line ?

You are soooo lucky. My DM is a dolt. The whole district cringes at the sight and sound of him. He certainly got lucky keeping his job through recent downsizings because I think his superiors also find him to be dolt.

What does one do when management wants to find the negative in everything? Glass is aways have empty even whil I am on my way to Presidents Club.

apparently its ok to go below the line-so here i go. i dislike my manager so much. he is so rude and constantly demeans women. he treats me like im a child and basicially treats me like shit even though im doing better than over 1/2 the people in my district. he acts like a mans man with the other guys on the team and really just acts like an ass. hes rude to me, other customers and has no sense of management. actually he does, he manages by fear! i wish i could get the hell out of this company and i am trying like hell....good luck to all of you out there

I'm sorry for your situation. No one should be treated so poorly. I have been both a representative and a manager with PriCara and I can tell you there are an equally large number of bad representatives. It is a classic bell curve with 20% of the reps being strong, 60 being mediocre to average and 20% needing immediate termination.

My biggest area of disappointment is that my DM's business acumen is non-existent -- Example: it often takes up to 2 WEEKS (10 days) or more to get approve for a gRXS normal expense report which means I have to pay
the AMEX late fee of $20+.
Why isn't PriCara tracking my DM for the report's submit day verses the approval date ? (Policy is 5 days).
Why should the rep have to pay the AMEX late fee when the DM fails
to do their job ????? Suggestions?

Yes, I've sent my DM a text msg & voice message requesting the gRXS be approved pronto. So far, nothing has happened.

Man, this sounds like a clone of my DM.

Are you in the East, West, North or South ? ? ? ?

What about calling the Credo Hotline (or signing onto www.credohotline.com)---anonymously ?

I ask you to consider who is hiring who? Were the 20% bad reps hired by the bad DMs ??

Are you kidding me? Wah I have to pay the late fee which you are going to get back. Now go call Boston Market and set-up your lunches for the week.

You couldn't be more wrong. You MANAGE projects, time, money, resources. You LEAD people. You don't manage them.

I actually think the other poster meant to put it another way because I believe you are wrong. A good manager is someone that gets their inspiration and satisfaction out of being a true mentor and supports their reps and is the go-to when issues come up and they need help, support, and guidance. This job is an autonomous one. We are all profewssionals that get the job done and I don't need someone to watch over me everyday. As a rep, I manage MY projects, my time, my money, and all the resources given to me.
Bad managers are the babysitters and spies. They are the ones that use intimidation as their motivation rather than support and positive reinforcement. They are the ones that get emails out and copy the regionals to make themselves look good and could care less about their individual reps. They are motivated by climbing the ladder rather than being a mentor. It is one thing if a rep has poor numbers and isn't working, then a manager needs to reprimand this person to various levels - including termination. Sometimes, a rep has poor numbers and they truly are working to their best potential. Perhaps they are not working smart. Rather than instantly wanting to get rid of this rep, this would be the opportunity for the manager to jump in and help them towards becoming a better rep and working smarter. Unfortunately this usually doesn't happens. Although this industry says it is all about what is best for the patient - in actually reality it is a business and all they care about is the numbers. The most ironic thing is though that the majority of managers out there are not good salespeople....so how can they teach? I can't tell you how many times I have seen reps getting promoting and being stunned, since their numbers as rep were never stellar.

Quick review of your best points

1) Intimidation doesn't work. Stress is not productive.
Motivation/positive reinforcement matters.
2) I have NEVER seen a PriCara DM do a detail in front of the room (a group).
3) Pricara doesn't appreciate reps who look out or support other reps.
(Sometimes, rep's #s are being generated from other people's efforts and/or docs
-- by way of the insane IMX (of weekly luck) of tracking TRXs).
4) Team work is not a company goal.
5) Right on, that what's best for the "patient" is big time BS.
(Just talk).
6) Management is too concerned about how "it" reflects of them.
(Show time).

Absolutely dead on! All of your points are so valid!

Thanks for validating everything I said. You just described a LEADER, not a manager.

in the east region....where are you? it's so insulting to be treated like a child and spoken to like you are nothing but a bother to a manger. I would consider myself i good rep when I am above the top 1/2 of our region and district! its awful! good luck to you!
