Bacterin Biologics

I have an opportunity with this company to interview and they are claiming their territory will do 200K-250K selling Bone type products to Spine, Ortho, and Sports Medicine.
However, I had thought this market was saturated plus these docs will usually just get this stuff from who is providing their metal. Any thoughts? They compete against Medtronic, Stryker (Op-1), Orthovita possibly, others etc...

These guys are filling you with BS. You'll struggle against the big dogs that have metal. I am a rep that has both and know several biologic only reps that hate it because they can't even get into the OR to sell.

I used to sell Biologics only and I can tell you it is very, very difficult if you don't have "metal" in your bag! The above poster is absolutely correct, it's hard to get into a case because the rep who the surgeon is using for his metal also has a biologic, guranteed. Also, there are probably about 5 different biologics on the shelf at the hospital so the doc can just call for one of those if his rep doesn't have one on hand. Good luck getting your product on the shelf as hospitals are looking to streamline this PAR level. Not trying to sound negative, just the reallity of this type sale having did it for more than two years. Now having said all that, if you can get on with Medtronic selling Infuse, then that's a different story. They have their own sales force for Infuse and the reps do very well because there is no competition, it has a very high price point, and the docs love it! GL

Yes it is difficult but not impossible. The product is better than others in some areas and equal but cost significantly less in others. The company has multiple products for multiple call points which gives us flexibility. Next time you find a 200-250k job that is easy in this economy let me know but this job is fun and workable. By the way it is indicated in Cervical spine fusion unlike others that cause problems.

***There's the company line! An obvious post from a Bacterin rep or mngr, and YES they are promising $250k a year but you will never see it!!! Listen up and I'll give you the 411 as I know it. Bacterins (Guy Cook & Taggart bro's) promise of $200k+ is not only BS they are outright lies. I personally know half dozen guys through out the country who have or have had Bacterin. Stay far far away ... if you've been laid off or fired or trying to break into medical sales then ok, jump on it but don't plan on making it a career. Bacterin is turning over reps every 90 days. No that is not a typo, EVERY 90 DAYS, even RSD's.

Company insiders tell me that the company is low on money and struggling to get more money from investors. We're in a financial crunch these days and VC's (venture capitalist) are prob not throwing out money as generously as they were a few years back. As the poster above mentioned, many of the hardware companies carry a biologic these days and can meet the surgeon needs so it would be very difficult to penetrate those surgeons.

Here are a few other boards I browse and feedback on Bacterin:

Just talked with a Neurosurgeon and he had no that is 0 fusions with the Osteospone--looks like the white paper comparing it to Infuse was BS, Oh well time to move on, the science does not add up

Backed up the Bacterin 0 fusions by a neuro with a int pain specialist in a diff state talking about how they did not honor his stock options and the science dept not trustworthy, does not sound great

Listen in to their next conf call and hear them stammer. Placed several good reps with them and as mentioned above..they were all gone within months after their contacts were harvested. The good news is Bacterin's latest loan is collateralized by the company itself. May be new owners soon

Guy Cook is a clueless moron! It is unbelievable that he has managed to keep the Board of Directors from firing his sorry ass years ago! DO NOT TRUST HIM!

Could not agree with you more. Look at the EVP and RVP list it is full of people with little experience and less common sense but are great at kissing ass. And at some point they will have to produce studies and factual information on their products. Obviously the study comparing theirs to infuse is completely false and leads me to believe the rest is crap. I heard from a surgeon that the science dept. is horrible and a sham. Good luck in 2011 cause you will need it.

I remember one sales meeting we were only 40% of the quarterly quota and Cook said it was mandatory in the last four weeks to do the remainder of the last 60%! To make him more clueless one of our key products had been on back order for over a month....and would still be unavailable for another five weeks. ho ho ho

PacMan, in response to your post, I currently work for Bacterin International (the biological company that recently went public) I've been with Bacterin for approximately NINE months. As a sales rep, I just want to set the record straight, the "$200,000" that you claim is not achievable... has been achieved by myself! Here is a portion of my "SurePayRoll" paystub:
GROSS 237,756.91
Auto 300.00
AutoRei 5,400.00
COMM $ 170,256.71
OTHER $ 1,800.00
SALARY 59,654.0

PacMan, not to be condescending, but success lies within!!! :)

Probably lies within one of your doctors being on the advisement board and getting stock options.

My territory started with nothing, no sales, no approvals, no surgeon relationships, nothing, I built it from scratch. I have lost accounts due to competitors, Lanx, Nuvasive, Globus, Alphatec, Medtronic, etc. with their surgeon relationships in place. If you want to see who has relationships, and who doesn't, check out the NASS annual meeting disclosure for the last 2 years. You will see thousands of relationships in place, but the one company name you don't see anywhere is Bacterin.

I have an opportunity to interview with this company for a 'start from scratch' type territory...also been speaking with exactech who is a little more established in the territory. it seems like the community opinion is to stay away from bacterin, but i feel like a lot of discussions on this forum are filled with negative banter...
the income numbers that were posted seemed promising, i guess i'm just struggling with who to believe.
