Insurance companies are increasingly requiring patients (or their physicians) to ask permission, known as pre-authorization, before the companies agree to pay for these critical medications. A decade ago, it was relatively common for patients to have access to at least one disease-modifying MS drug without having to get pre-authorization from their insurer. Such access is rare now.
