The introduction of antiretroviral therapy (ARV) agents in the mid 1990s revolutionized HIV treatment and significantly decreased mortality and morbidity in HIV patients. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services guidelines for HIV treatment recommend initiation of ARV regardless of disease stage, as ARV delays disease progression, improves life expectancy, lowers chances for developing drug resistance, and prevents HIV transmission.
