Why would anyone want to go back to work here after being laid off?

I am considering applying for an opening but honestly I am asking myself why?

1. Who wants to sell Boniva, a product going off patent in 6 months.
2. Why would I want to essentially, give back my huge severance pay?
3. Why would I want to go back to the same unstable environment I left, worrying about when the next lay-offs were happening?

I have been getting many phone calls from head hunters and honestly, I don't feel the job market is that bad for my level of experience. I am covered for well over a year with my severance pay out AND I am getting unemployment on top of that. The only reason I am even considering going back to this hell hole is because I don't have to be retrained and I am familiar with the territory/manager. Should I just hold out for a much better opportunity?

Thanks!

You are a roche zero, you mean nothing to any company.

1. Boniva Patent expires April 2012, not August 2011
2. We already know when the next layoff is coming, it will be year end or q1 2012.
3. Sure you pay back partial severance, but you get additional year salary, retention bonus, then the same severance package next year.
4. Being contacted by headhunters means nothings. There are definately several headhunters contacting dozens if not hundreds of people for the same territory's, as they are contacting you for, with all the layoffs, and the extreme contraction in this joke of a profession, your chances of EVER landing In rhanother rep job is negligible at best.

In the end if I were you, and assuming YOU ACTUALLY GET AN INTERVIEW AND OFFERED A BONIVA JOB, consider taking it. Financially you will come out at least 2 1/2 times better.

Agree with everything you said in your post, except, I would not bank on getting the exact same severance package again. Nothing is set in stone. I would say you are better off taking another position if you are offered one. Why take a position where you KNOW you won't have a job next year. Nothing is guaranteed about jobs, but to know you won't have a job will bother you all year. I say take another position (which will provide you salary for the next year and then some hopefully), then you also get to keep your severance AND get paid to train at a new position. You will come out much better in the long run.

Thanks for the great feedback. I have applied for the open position back at Genentech as well as another opportunity through a headhunter-that interview is next week. We will see, but one thing that someone said which hit home is the fact that I probably will go insane not actually having a job secured this year. Thanks again!

It is much better to have a job while searching for another. Severance doesn't help with perks of the job; car, phone, computer etc...
You never know where this could lead within the company. If they feel that strongly about bringing you back then that is a good thing.

Fact, you will be getting the same severance as last year layoffs got. But you are putting the OP is putting the cart before the horse. As I stated previously, there is no guarantee that they he/she would even get an interview for a boniva job, and why is he/she counting their chickens with this "recruiter" call thing. They are acting as though they actually have a choice to make. Bottomline is if slected for interview, themn offered a boniva job, they should at least consider it. They should also realize that recruiter calls, does not equate to actual interviews, and that dozens of folks will likely be interviewing for any job that they might also be interviewing for. tRUST ME, IF YOU ARE AN UNEMPLOYED REP, YOU TAKE WHAT YOU CAN GET, THE OUTLOOK IS BLEAK.

BTW, I would agree that a "permanent" job with another company is better than a temp job with Roche. But a temp job with roche is better than "No Job" at all. Right now the OP has no job at all, and perhaps one 15-20 people at least interviewing for the other job in question.

Nancy and Troy guaranteed 210 reps at the fireplace that we would get at least the severance that was just offered. I'm tired of hearing you severed ones say that Roche will never offer a severance like this again.
Shut the hell up; they will.

I really wouldn't bank on getting the same severance folks. This company has promised so many things that have never come to fruition so if you're hanging your hat on getting the same severance, I would think again. You all should know by now what happens when you believe and trust upper management. WAKE UP!

A rather harsh reply from someone in so good of a space!!!! I honestly could care less just on for the entertainment value. I have be released from my demons. How about you?

Do not listen tothe negative talkers like this person. Every major layoff since the merger has resulted in the same severance package (24 weeks, + 3 weeks per year). It has also already been publicly announced that the same will be done for the rest of PC at the end of the year. The same old "the severance package is gonna suck" garbage was spewed during the last layoff, and thankfully for me the nay sayer conspiracy theorists were wrong. Even when I produced written documentation of Roche policy indicating a minimum of 12 weeks + 2 weeks per year, there were still people screaming armageddon.

You must realize that there are some people, like the above, that are so pessimistic and always want to see a train wreck. These are the same types of people that insist that the president is a foreigner, that he is a muslim (not that theres anything wrong with that), and that the next layoff will result in reduced severance. Think about it, what is there to be gained. Go ahead and plan your finances, you will be getting 6 months plus 3 weeks per years, plus unused vacation, plus bonus; they will withhold 35% or so for taxes, as mandated by law. The company was more than generous with me, and they will be with you. Bank on it.

Make up your mind, first 3 weeks then 2 weeks then 3 weeks. It was 2 weeks for every year.

To the poster who sounds so secure about getting the same severance, no one is being a pessimist, I am being a REALIST and preparing myself for possibly not getting the same package. If you want to live in a PIPE DREAM and believe EVERYTHING people are telling you then by all means GO AHEAD! Hopefully we will get the same severance, but NOTHING is a guarantee. Did you sign a contract? I don't think so. In light of what s going on in the pharmaceutical industry these days, you DON"T KNOW WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN. So call me a pessimist if you want and keep living in dream land. Oh, and by the way, their severances were taxed damn near 50%, where do you get 35%?? Get your facts right before posting BS.

Get over it then and move on.
