Who's jumping ship at Ethicon?

Absolutely. Let's see, most of the reps are not selling products they have never been trained on: HSRs are now CSRs or full line, CRSs are full line, but no one is being trained on the expanded products they are representing. And training is when? Oh yes, we just don't know yet. Wake up people. The merger and layoffs are coming very soon.

I'm hearing that between all the Ethicon companies there are about 1000 reps and corp wants it streamlined down to about 700. EWHU only has the morcellex and sling but mesh is gone so doesn't look good. But that's only about 150-160 reps. Not sure where they plan on pulling the other 150 or so reps from. If I hear Energy is the new growth platform one more time, I'm going to pull my hair out. Biosurgery is killing it!

If this is true (I doubt it to be honest) but I would think that endo will take the biggest hit. You can't have 5 reps in the same city with only 3 or 4 accounts each. That's where the fat is in my opinion. Ewhu and EP already had significant headcount reduction. Endo has to be next.

Wrong. EWHU can easily be absorbed into endo and inc. if you are there and not looking, you are an idiot. Inc. and full line territories in endo will expand so there will be some head count reduction but endo energy will expand - they will move over some full line and bariatric reps but there will be more cuts on the inc side. Endo reps can do everything that Inc and EWHU reps can do but not vice versa. Just the way it is.

Not vice versa? How hard is it to sell trocars and cutters? With energy out of their bag endo reps become pretty expendable. Not to mention there are way too many of them. Those guys just camp out in the same 2 or 3 accounts. They would have no idea what to do with an entire territory to manage.

Everybody is getting caught up in which company is getting cut or who or why...here's the deal based on my experience in being downsized and working for JNJ for a while(15yrs)

First we have to look how the companies are being run. If you haven't noticed, there has been a large infiltration from the Pharma side...I'm not saying this a good or bad, just a fact. See in the Pharma worl...this is constant. Every 5-6 years there is a downsizing due to their drugs coming off patent, then shortly after that 1-2 yrs later there is another expansion. and the viscous cycle continues. Well here in the MD&D world we don't have to worry so much about drugs coming off patent..but the monkeys inside sitting behind their beautiful desks have no idea what to do when revenues dip, so the will rely back to what they know and consolidate and reduce head count. This is business 101 ( at least in the 1980's anyway) now in the new decade it is called six sigma. It is all about how to become the most efficient business that one could be. Instead of coming out with new products they will streamline what they have until the next big thing hits..ie..the 1-2 cycle after the downsizing we are currently going through.

Now...who's going and who's staying...as all companies will do, they will hire an outside consultant to make strong recommendations on who stays and who go's. Not your manager, not your regional, not your friends, but rather some indian towel head to put push pins on a map of where you live and the accounts that are around you. The decisions being made will be made on 1, geography vs potential, 2. your specific location to that geography, and finally they will look at tenure of individual reps. (more tenure=gone). It doesn't matter whether you sell sutures, or trochars, or gyne things. Because all that will change anyway.

Take a look around you..do you see all the chaos, people leaving, managers being total jerks. This is not pressure being put on them from above or information they have received...These people see what's coming too and are too afraid or simply can't leave yet. Do yourself a favor...If you haven't put your resume out...You better start.

Great quote and very true. The problem I see is that the medical device companies in Johnson and Johnson have placed phara management in medical device management. So many of these people have not ever sold a device and don't have the credibility or practical sales knowledge of devices. Ethicon has always had a poor management training program that paled in comparison to the pharma management training program but you can not replace the experience gained by selling in the OR and hospitals with devices.

again, don't get caught up in pharma vs mdd. or the training they have received. don't get me wrong I agree with you, bit look at this as lack and white, just for a minute take off the rose colored or grey shade glasses.

the trickle down will be devastating for some and others will be rewarded for no reason at all. it all boils down to the push pins.. everybody and I mean everybody is playing Russian ruellete with their career. who ever thought they were going to get promoted, well that just got delayed as their will be a ton of already experienced people looking for that job. if you are so lucky to keep your job, you will be stick there for a while. that's fine and dandy for some, bit those wanting to get promoted are screwed. anyway you look at what lies ahead...IT DOESN'T LOOK GOOD!

I hate so much to believe the previous few posts, but man the writing is on the wall. I know a lot of people from Endo have crazy amounts of anxiety about the whole changes to a global surgery group - with very little "new" information coming down from the top to the various companies, the stress level continues to go up. Good luck to everyone! Speculation can make you crazy, so for now handle your business and if you feel like you may be cut in the near future - do something about it now.....

EES has always been full of a lot of smug, cocky, obnoxious people and sorry for saying this but this might be what they needed to come back to earth and realize that they were not part of anything that great. They were at one time the crown jewel of JNJ pharma but the reality is that when they look for a job in the medcial device world, they will see that they were really glorified pharma.

everything is going downhill it seems; harmonic in the tank with reprocessing and no way to fight it for now. EES reps everywhere but not gaining much business. I can't imagine J&J keeping us around to look pretty.

troll..... if you went to the meetings last week you would know what the game plan is.
