Everybody is getting caught up in which company is getting cut or who or why...here's the deal based on my experience in being downsized and working for JNJ for a while(15yrs)
First we have to look how the companies are being run. If you haven't noticed, there has been a large infiltration from the Pharma side...I'm not saying this a good or bad, just a fact. See in the Pharma worl...this is constant. Every 5-6 years there is a downsizing due to their drugs coming off patent, then shortly after that 1-2 yrs later there is another expansion. and the viscous cycle continues. Well here in the MD&D world we don't have to worry so much about drugs coming off patent..but the monkeys inside sitting behind their beautiful desks have no idea what to do when revenues dip, so the will rely back to what they know and consolidate and reduce head count. This is business 101 ( at least in the 1980's anyway) now in the new decade it is called six sigma. It is all about how to become the most efficient business that one could be. Instead of coming out with new products they will streamline what they have until the next big thing hits..ie..the 1-2 cycle after the downsizing we are currently going through.
Now...who's going and who's staying...as all companies will do, they will hire an outside consultant to make strong recommendations on who stays and who go's. Not your manager, not your regional, not your friends, but rather some indian towel head to put push pins on a map of where you live and the accounts that are around you. The decisions being made will be made on 1, geography vs potential, 2. your specific location to that geography, and finally they will look at tenure of individual reps. (more tenure=gone). It doesn't matter whether you sell sutures, or trochars, or gyne things. Because all that will change anyway.
Take a look around you..do you see all the chaos, people leaving, managers being total jerks. This is not pressure being put on them from above or information they have received...These people see what's coming too and are too afraid or simply can't leave yet. Do yourself a favor...If you haven't put your resume out...You better start.
