What % of Merck reps in their mid to late '40s will make it to 55 here?

Yes they can discontinue it at any time. I am paying $400 a month for myself and three dependents, BCBS for medical and Metlife for dental through Merck. The coverage are 99% identical to my pre-retirement coverage. I was a rep for three decades prior to my retirement.

$400 for a family is excellent. Outside plan for one person is now close to 1000 per month....thanks to Obamacare. Insurance is basically unaffordable for anyone without a company plan......went from high to now untouchable........Republican open market exchanges would have brought prices down....Just pray for a reversal of this entire corrupt administration in 2012....if not, the US will probably collapse.

Exactly what Obama would like to see happen....the collapse of the USA...if anyone looks at his record, this should come as no surprise. We have a country filled with idiots that elected him.

50 and over I would stay until they hired security to kick you out the door. I am pretty sure if you have 10-15 years and between the age 35-45 here at Merck you will be released soon. It's a age where they could replace you pretty easily at 70% of your pay and it will reset the pension meter. 10-15 years will get you 300-700 dollars a month with no health benefits.

"10-15 years will get you 300-700 dollars a month with no health benefits."

How do you get this....numbers seem off..not what my statement says...

I heard QE3 is coming. We are going to print more money. My kids are already indebted thanks to the spenders in DC.

He's right on the money. That's why Merck is pushing all of the 40-somethings out the door---they can't sue, they get paid too much an their pension is peanuts.

What will destroy most of the older and 'tenured' reps will be the companys lack of consistence on any issue! Merck has no real committment to anything...we get a new sales tactic every time you turn around and its gone before the paint gets dry on the wall of dishonor! NCM as it was rolled out didn't last long enough for everyone to get a grasp on it and now its histroy...was blasted by my manager early on for suggesting that my counterpart have a routing so we'd know if she was working or not because that is not the style of NCM! Now I get blasted at a meeting for not having a routing for XR when I've been in the territory for over 20 years! We cannot concentrate on the things that work in sales but we will go fishing any time somebody sells Merck on a new scheme! I've been thru eight of them in the last 20 years and every one of them was the best thing since sliced bread and would make us great again! Horseshit!

This is the sad point. Your manager wants to show off to his/her boss that all the reps have a routing for XR all set to go. It does not matter if it is realistic. It does not matter if the reps will faithfully implement it. I have been here even longer than you. Eventually I gave up and always have a routing available for everything, including my bathroom stops. :)

You think NCM was a long and well thought out concept. Something to guide the company into the next millennium. Something many have discussed over and over at the HQ before introducing it. Then it is gone. Do they enjoy project of the month that much? Did they buy another "better" package from a vendor? Has the market place changed that quickly in only a few years? If so, can't they anticipate it given they have all the forecasting tools? Can they field test an idea before a national roll-out?

The pension you have earned IS guarenteed to be paid out - there is government insurance for that. However, Mrk has no obligation to continue the pension plan and can discontinue at any time.
There is no government insurance asshole...the Federal Pension Gauarantee corporation only takes over when a company dumps its pension plan or it becomes insolvent! FPGC is a joke...the most it pays out is 52K/year no matter what your salary was and like anything else government its SOCIALIST leaning is huge! One airline captain got the 52K while baggage handlers (with no responsibility coming to work drunk etc) got 36K! Everything this friggin socialist government does today is about redistributing wealth..or as with the debt...poverty!

As someone who may get crapo that 52 looks good.

Mother Mercks teets are running dry.....this is just a start, the whole Pharma model is done and over, I work for another comapany but always chime in on other boards when layoffs are announced, company I work for just did huge one about 6 months ago and doubt it is the last, over 50 as well and I am at point where Ill do what they ask until ist is completely ridiculous then ask for early out. Why does everyone on these boards think that at say 53 or so that if the pension isnt enough they have to stay, Pension over at my company is same deal, but hey 1000 month plus lower benefits are perfect set up to do something else and move on with a little financial support along the way

Look into whatever you get on your plan. You might get a big surprise. You probably will NOT be able to touch it for many more years. Unless you have been with the company many years 55 is NOT going to be the start collection date. You may need to wait till 66 or 67.

As the other poster stated, check to see if you can start tapping into the pension at all. I know of a few former colleagues that were in their late 40's and displaced and bridged to retirement. All it meant was they can buy insurance through Merck as retirees. But they cannot touch the pension until they turn 55.

That would be correct.

I left just before NCM was rolled out in Chicago. I'm sorry to hear it has followed Merck's history of a 12-24 month average lifespan for field sales initiatives. What an enormously wasteful habit that your management can't seem to fix. I left after finding no credibility left in the company and everyone telling me I had to go through the motions and play some sick game to both do my job as well as keep it. No thanks.
