What Jeff Kindler was paid to do

Pfizer needed to downsize because they are moving most of their R&D overseas. As an attorney ole Jeffie knew that a high wrongful termination settlement was on the order of $100,000. So here was the plan he put into action. The company would downsize and offer a “generous” severance package, often a year’s salary or approximately $100,000 for workers who were highly paid and had been with the company for more than ten years, which were exactly the people Pfizer was looking to get rid of. Then came the bogus performance reviews. If you were too old, too well paid, too smart for your own good, resisted the outsourcing mentality, or just in the wrong place at the wrong time, then you got a bad review. Shortly after the bad review you were “deselected” and offered the “generous” severance package.
The severance package was simply Pfizer’s way of settling its discrimination lawsuits before they began. You see, when you are almost 50 and have a family, you can’t afford to fight Pfizer in court even if you are right. First, they will tie you up in court and you won’t see any money for years. Second, if your settlement is likely to be what they are offering you in the first place, and if you fight a lawyer will take a third of it anyway, fighting makes no sense and few lawyers would bother to take your case.
Lawyers want quick moderately profitable hits to pay the bills, not to wait 10 years for a big payoff which may or may not happen. Incidentally, most of the employment attorneys in the New London/Groton area have taken payoffs from Big Blue (and I don't mean IBM) so don’t even bother consulting them, get an attorney from out of town who will work on commission, and they will if you have a strong case.
Kindler’s strategy was in fact brilliant. Using it, Pfizer could treat any employee any way they wanted to, and they did. The company is a wrecking machine, and they will stomp anyone who challenges them or refuses to bow down with absolutely no hesitation.
What is truly amazing to me is that everyone knows what is going on at Pfizer yet we have seen no big news stories on what has been happening. Where is 60 minutes, 20/20, or dateline? Any reporter with the brains of a dishrag who started digging could get a great story. Unfortunately, all those people who were coerced into taking the severance by Pfizer signed statements saying they would not say anything derogatory about the company. Unfortunately in this case, the truth about what happened is derogatory.
You might want to save this post to your hard drive before it is deleted. Then you can repost it so the truth can be heard. Pfizer is very good at bullying people and suppressing the truth.

This is EXACTLY what happened to me. Been out for a few months now. Still trying to put my head back together from what was done to me over the last few years I was there. Probably had enough info for a lawsuit, but didn't want the stress so I took the money and ran. Don't know if I will ever want to work in science again...

The problem is hard evidence, like e-mails, recorded conversations, etc. Otherwise, it's just your word against their and that is like fighting City Hall.
But I do agree with the post 100%. Pfizer careful skewed the numbers via their "Schedule A" to "prove" they didn't age discriminate but I think they planned this in advance by hiring a small number of incompetent kids straight out of College in '07-'08 that they KNEW they would pfire in two years or so to round out the age distribution. They were salting the numbers, as it were, to hide the real targets- the older worker. In fact, they openly admitted in Groton at that time that they were being told to hire ONLY R1's and R2"s for open positions. They even sent R3's and R4's to second rate Universities to recruit the cannon fodder for their grand plan.
I knew I was a gonner, so I confronted the establishment anyway about the way they kept the threat of layoffs alive for months on end just to try to get as many people as possible to leave voluntarily in advance, another one of their obvious strategies. Everyone from Kindler on down knew how I felt about the situation. On the surface, they responded with political correctness to pretend they cared. Under the table, they told me to shut up or I'd get no severance.
I sincerely hope somebody can provide the documentation to get the ball rolling on a suit one day. My two year limitation is almost up with regards to my severance waiver, so I'd be happy to tell my story in detail if asked down the road. I want to see them burn.

Having worked at Pfizer Groton for over twenty years, it is truly amazing how many people with solid 10, 15, and 20 year track records have been let go for "poor performance" since 2008. As aggressive as the attorney general is in the state of CT, I find it very surprising that no one from that office has investigated this matter. I cannot understand why the state is giving them a pass on this matter because Pfizer is clearly going to uproot and move from the state as soon as it is practical for them to do so. I know many have complained to Richard Blumenthal's office but so far nothing of substance has been done. I guess he has been too busy running for Senate.

This isn't the first time this sort of information has been posted about Pfizer or Kindler. I wonder if they've been hit with a class action suit of some kind and that is why they are suddenly so keen on keeping everyone quiet?

WOW!

You just described my last few years at Pfizer perfectly except that I was a sales rep for Pfizer for over 10 years making 100K plus. I was always in the top ten percent of sales and won VPC several times yet was tortured by management. I guess they were hoping I'd quit before severance payout. I ended up developing a autoimmune disease from the severe stress
I was under. Only by God's grace did I hang in there to receive my severance- to their dismay....

I hope you don't throw away your God given talent as a Scientist because of the evil people at Pfizer. Your gift in science is precious and very valuable. We need more ethical, talented individuals in this world so please don't give up. In time, I believe you'll see that being layed- off was actually a blessing in disguise. It certainly has been for me.

Yep. Exactly what happened to me.
I was with Pfizer for 14 years, 13 years of superior performance reviews and promotions. Then the last year I had an excellent mid year review, when out of the blue (no pun intended) my end of year performance review was horrible. No PIP, no specifics, no build up just POW! At the same time the department reorganized , cutting out one position at my level. My peers competing for the remaining positions were in their 30s and 40s, I was 55.
I took the severance and ran.

Same thing happened to me after 14 yrs. of promotions and great reviews. All of a sudden I was treated like an outcast with a disease (55 yrs. old) and rated much lower than younger people with crap work ethic. You get what you pay for Pfizer! I hope you crash and burn soon and take JK with you.

Today Pfirezer laid off a sales rep in Texas with 15 Years back-to-back VPC awards. That level of performance is unprecedented. Dedication and hard work are not valued at Pfirezer anymore. Get out if you can or they will show you the door when you are in your fifties and it is harder to find another position. I know. I was laid off in 2009 two years short of a full pension under the Warner-Lambert plan. Coincidence-maybe but probably not.

Poster #3 here-

The harassment started with me at age 35 and ended when I was layed-off, just shy of 40. So obviously it isn't just the people in their fifties and up that are being targeted. In my case it was due to my high salary. They replaced me with a 20 something just out of college....

In the end, I'm definitely the lucky one. I took the severance and ran!

This type of behavior has been going on in Groton for years. I personally know of four people who had ten plus years of good performance and were suddenly rated all "2's" or "1's" without any prior feedback or warning that their performance was not satisfactory. It is hard to believe that this behavior has gone on for so long without someone in the media doing an expose on the situation. One manager told a friend of mine "2's" are the new "3's" at Pfizer. Two weeks later he was let go. Apparently not. There is also one extremely egregious case of where a well published scientist with a 16 year track record of good performance who worked for CAL (the rule of 5 guy) was given all 1's and let go. He is now suing Pfizer using an attorney from out of town and has won two CHRO actions against Pfizer. Word is he had a new job within days of being given his poor rating. Rumor is Pfizer is now trying to fire his British boss who gave him the poor rating.

Yep, same thing with the sales performance reviews. I won VPC then shortly after had my review and received the lowest performance scores of my career! I spoke with my team mates who were also VPC winners-all of us had been with Pfizer for close to 10 yrs- and the same thing happened to them. When I questioned my manager, her excuse was similar to the "2'S ARE THE NEW 3's" BS.
It's so obvious what Pfizer is doing. They're helping their Liberal politician friends realize their Socialist agenda by weeding out the talented, independent thinkers and replacing them with silly, ignorant children for half the pay. Pfizer is laying off all these professionals because they believe that they're "too big to fail" and can now afford to lose them for the sake of Socialism. Their goal is to financially ruin anyone with a brain and "balls" and make them dependent on the government thus ultimately assisting the Liberals in destroying the upper and middle class and making everyone "equal" -except for them of course- who will be the top 1% of the wealthy. So Pfizer ELT, how am I doing so far- you fucks?!

These people sound like conspiracy theorists, but unfortunately, it's almost all true. When there are sociopaths in charge, especially leftists, anything is possible.

Just look at modern history from the 1840's to present day. The "conspiracies", i.e. the truth, are impossible for anyone with a conscience to comprehend or internalize.

Yes, not a theory but a fact! I know many people in comparable situations i.e. age, salary, tenure who work in different industries for big fortune 500 companies who have experienced the same harassment/lay-off scenario. Big business Socialist Execs have colluded with the current Socialist Administration and are trying to turn America into Europe.
The only way they can succeed is if we do nothing. It is vital that we fight back!

This has nothing to do with socialism you moron. The only agenda Pfizer has here is saving money, and if that means firing masses of US workers and replacing them with Chinese and Indian scientist so be it. If it means trumping up performance issues on US workers to either fire them without a severance package or force them to take a severance package so be it. If it saves money and creates "value" for the stockholders it will be done, regardless of legality, ethics, or "Pfizer Values." This is greed and capitalism at its best baby.

Too right that it has nothing to do with socialism. At least not democratic socialism of the type practised in many European democracies. For those who think I'm way off beam - you should try travelling round Europe and living in a few of those socialist countries you hate so much (just as I've travelled round and lived in the US and Canada). I think you'd find injustice everywhere. Just as much as you'd find great people doing great things everywhere.

But, I digress...what the performance review system did start to look like at Pfizer was Albanian communism. Sounds crazy? Well, the system under Enver Hoxa required the police to find at least one person in every work group, family, district etc who had done something illegal. And then bring them to justice. Obviously, the person on trial didn't have to have done anything wrong at all. Just like the Pfizer system of using a normal distribution in each department and project the Albanian system relied on the fear of the police (reviewers) getting their come-uppance at the hands of their superiors should they fail to toe the line.

Very good, same thing happened to me. You left out when the compaliance officer calls ans asks for help in catching these managers, dont ever do. With the assistance of HR, these managers are the best at Harassment and retaliation. Savew all your illegal documents, you might need them later. Good luck at finding a jobcominfg from this company!

Why does the government let Pfizer keep laughing at them?

Don't confuse criminal activity with capitalism. Capitalism works when you provide a benefit to the purchaser not when you cheat. Notice all their lawyers are in place except for Kindler, esq.

Please people, don't take these things personally.Pfizer animal div. turned my once sweet & precious wife into a back stabbing ,decietful, cold woman. I watched this transformation w/my own eyes & my beloved family is in ruins because of it.Don't let it get you,Idespise pfizer.

This has everything to do with Socialism- you fool. The ultimate goal is Communism but they know an armed America won't stand for that so they nudge us into a Socialist model then eventually Communism.
