Well let's just dismiss 30 other oncology pharma companies by labeling them "big pharma". What does that tell you with number of companies above labeled "until recently bought out"?Those companies no longer exist, genius!
The word "options" does not necessarily equate to any value. Ask your friends who fled Spectrum or those recently joining Allos. The history of the pharma world is littered with vanished small companies with worthless stock options. Here is the vested value of options for a few of the above companies:
Incyte - zero
Dendreon - zero
Seattle Genetics - zero
Cephalon / Teva has huge problems to overcome due to the with current attitudes toward the sales force and our inept compliance / VP leadership. However, "options" with a small company are not a reason to move to another company.
no longer exist and with worthless option packages.
It's quite obvious you have never had an equity position in a company to your benefit. Well, some of us have. You mention Incyte, Seattle Genetics and Dendreon above. The people at Sea Gen and Incyte will make money,THESE ARE NEW COMPANIES..options do not have value until vesting and + strike price..Do your research. Dendreon gives "Grants" with a vesting schedule. This means there is no strike price, the company simply gives you stock which becomes yours at the vesting points, mostly likely 25% each year. The stock took a tumble but the grants will always be worth something as long as the stock has value. Incyte has not launched a drug yet ...Seattle Genetics is giving grants and options. I don't know who your friends are but I have many who have made hundreds of thousands from companies like Celgene, Genetech, OSI,Gilead, Milleneum,Alexion....there are so many more....BTW-just about every single bio-tech company offers some sort of stock package. Remember there is a difference between a true Bio-tech and others.....
Of course options with a small company are never the sole reason to leave. This was not my point but they are very important to consider when looking at the overall package and potential. Options and grants give a employee further incentive to work hard. You mention Spectrum....this is still a good play. They have a promising product or two in the pipeline, my friends there stand to make hundreds of thousands when and if they are bought out.....It's rumored Teva will buy them out.
Allos was never a good play. I don't know why someone would have gone there...at least they gave employees options....at least they tried....
You sound like someone who is very conservative and afraid of "risk".... You don't become widely successful if you don't engage risk...
Thanks for calling me a "genius"....those reps who worked for companies which were bought out are sitting pretty right now, with lots of cash in their pockets so are some at Cephalon.
Look, a really "good" company does everything to maintain, keep- talented people. This means equity positions, consistent bonuses, meaningful sales contests which could entail more stock/money. Most importantly.... free reign for a rep to do his/her job. Call reporting, frequent and numerous visits from managers are cumbersome to most reps...
Obviously something is very wrong at Cephalon. It's unbelievable to see so many talented/experienced Oncology reps leave like this. It's not so much the desire to launch new drugs but more of a desire to leave a place which has no leadership,identity...quite frankly they don't know what they are doing in Oncology. Treanda could have done a lot more, they got lucky on it's acquisition. It will be interesting to see how the management there makes it work with Teva. It will get worse for line management and reps due to the Teva style of management. They demand aggressive goals, the Ceph folks(management) won't know how to push back some of these goals and the crap will run down hill to the DM's and reps....
People who left are just looking for a place where they will be treated well and like adults. The survey situation is really over the top and was instituted to keep the option money of top management protected....once the deal(merger) closes and the big shots have their money...things may get a little better.....
