I feel like I’m at a critical point in my career. I feel so defeated and disillusioned by what I thought AZ was about. This past weekend I took the time to read the actual lawsuit filings regarding the manager who just won $2.4 mil from AZ for their abuse. I didn’t know if I should cry or scream about how this poor woman was treated for trying to do the right thing. Thank goodness a jury has awarded her an amount that should allow her to be comfortable for the rest of her life. I hope she takes comfort knowing that an impartial jury recognized that she was wronged and deserved to be rightly compensated.
But where does that leave us? Who are working for? Is it all just smoke, mirrors, and bullshit? How many painful videos and HR lectures fo we have to sit through, reminding us that bullying will not be tolerated? How many times are we reminded that off-label promotion is an absolute no-no? Most importantly, how many times does HR encourage us to report the offenders? That we’ll be supported by HR? That there’s zero tolerance for retaliation? Is that all just talk? Sure sounds like it is. This brave woman went up against upper management because she was trained to believe off-label promotion was wrong. She gets punished for that. She tells her superior that she doesn’t like a nickname, and is ignored and the practice continues. She follows proper channels and is failed by HR.
Now maybe I don’t have all the information and there’s two sides to every story. But an IMPARTIAL jury heard all the evidence and ruled AstraZeneca was WRONG! Wrong to the tune of $2.4 MILLION dollars wrong.
So who do I work for? Can I work for a company I believe in? If I’m harassed, will HR support me or the bully? If I see off-label promotion going on, do I ignore it? Or do I follow the reporting rules, only to penalized for it? I want to work for a company that has standards and lives up them.
So what now?? That’s what I’m asking? What will AstraZeneca do to make this right? They’ll pay out the $2.4 mil to her, but what about the rest of us? Who are now saddened? Defeated? Disillusioned? Confused? AstraZeneca needs to put the talk into action. HR needs to show that NO ONE is above the rules. There needs to be a visible and tangible punishment for those who break the rules. Bullying is not to be tolerated. Off-label promotion is not to be tolerated. Those who do so, should be terminated.
So AstraZeneca, do you mean what you say???? Or does that only apply to some people????
