What’s the future of the Pharmaceutical Sales Rep?

People learn from people. People buy from people. I believe this. Sales is a critical role for Pharma. Now we can’t visit our customers in person.

What are you doing to connect with your customers?

What have you learned so far?

What’s having an impact?

First of all, your customers don’t buy anything. They might write a prescription for a drug. The TV commercial the patient saw about the drug has much more impact on if the drug is written. Everyone knows your “education” about the drug is nothing more than the marketing spew from the children in your marketing group. Your value is the delivery of food to the office staff.

I made it 6001 days in the industry. I am done and moving on. I am happy for my future but sad for all my peers who, I believe, will be let go with no alternative plans. Wake up everyone! Pharma sales will be very quickly going decimated. Not ending, as I believe there will always be sales people. Just not very many...

I agree. Only the best will survive. Looking forward to it!

You are high, as long as new drugs come out to the market there will always be a need for people to market them. If you’re old you are F...ed seriously you guys can’t use any of these tools companies are asking you to use while working from home. You can barely get on a zoom call to celebrate a birthday now you have to present to a doctor? Enjoy your new found job OP that joy will 90/120 days after you start. Yes it’s scary there will be a lot of lay offs and then a ramp up in hiring vicious cycle but all will be well.

I suppose you will only be selling on Zoom to doctors who are also under 30? Good luck with that

All the MDs are on zoom in CA. Virtual lunches are cool ( but kinda exhausting) in the 50% offices open to them and food delivery. I’m making my numbers in this environment. I work a full day, but I’m talking to coworkers more , more webexes and deep dives than previous. I like it and think virtual is here to stay. It will have far reaching benefits in large geographies.

Make sure you expect positive returns before you pick up the phone.

New products, an evolving market, and new consumer generations impact pharmaceutical sales reps every day. Sometimes, however, change occurs forever impacting the face of sales.

Pharma sales is an aberration of a warped health care system. It shouldn’t exist to begin with and the very tenuous argument that could’ve been made for the value a pharma Rep had is now non-existent post-Covid.

Wake up. You think you deserve to be paid 100,000 plus for working 3 hrs a day? You think companies don’t know that? What value do you retain once companies come to accept access is a thing of the past. How do you justify a rep model when they can promote fine digitally. The offices are already realizing this and are milking the Covid scare to finally keep y’all out.

Be smart. Segue into another field and adapt because these are the same questions your company is asking. You can wait and react or be proactive and adapt. You choose.

That is an interesting opinion about the necessity of sales. I disagree, but can understand your view.
If I only worked 3 hours a day to earn my 6 figure salary I would completely agree. I am not saying you do, so no need to respond personally.

Maybe if people found new ways to work and interact with customers, they would feel different? Are these people part of the problem or the solution? Work hard and good things happen. Put in a full day. You choose.

Bullshite! Impossible to put in a full day as a rep. Reps like you are the worst. Making this job seem serious.

Better start proving your value in time of pandemic. For the reps who are caterers and deliver sales details like “ How’s brand x going for you doctor? You need any samples?” Your time is up, u can pay a monkey in bananas to replicate the value you bring. And for those reps with territories thriving during COVID, your next on chopping block, in an environment of no live MD calls will trigger deeps sales effectiveness.... your services will no longer be needed and replaced with non personal promotion.

I was just layed off from a another failed start up. I had been in the industry for over 30 years. Access used to be great but until the sunshine act was instituted
It was the demise of the industry. The industry from the V.P. of sales on down
Are operating under false pretenses. Everyone is petrified of losing their jobs. I don’t blame them. Where else can you make six figures and benefits and hardly
Do anything? I took advantage of my free time and have several other ventures. I would love to find another gig with paycheck and benefits but I’m afraid the board of directors are going to look at the sales numbers Over the past six months and say “ sales are still doing great without reps” why are we spending $250000 per rep? Good luck to all in the
Future! I think the free ride is over and I’m glad I rode it for 30 hrs!

Not everyone wants to retire in the official sense of the word. Many, especially men, can find themselves bored after about 6 months into their retirement. Therefore, doing some type of work that is enjoyable and provides income can keep one busy enough and deliver a sense of satisfaction and fulfillment. Also, there are some, because of failure to plan, or experiencing too many layoff's with periods of unemployment (not uncommon in this industry for both older and younger reps), who have suffered financial setbacks and need to keep working and earning. In the end, it's best to have an exit plan, or at least a side gig and/or other revenue streams. Pharma is too sketchy with the job security!

One must be a part of the “good ole boy” club to stay. Why else would he be subject to the disrespect and belittling day after day.

I don’t Think this is the demise of the industry, but if the major companies were smart (and I’m not convinced they are or are willing to risk making big moves), they would pare back significantly when it comes to field headcount. There are just way too many of us,
