Do we need more, less or is it just about right?
We still have way too many reps and managers. With limited access increasing and the number of reps within these territories we are way over staffed. Add in the factor of Lipitor and then Viagra expiring we know what will happen with the excess manpower. Kiss your sweet cushy position goodbye - twelve months and counting. Can you spell PSS or PDI.

Dead on. Twelve months is a stretch. Look for gradual cuts beginning 1Q 11 and continuing throughout the year. Folks don't act surprised, the writing is all over the walls. This industry is a fossil.
This is why we laid off losers like you. Your jealous that we are still bringinng home the juice, while you are struggling to get by, making half of what you used to make. Face it-you did not make the grade and now are left to work for pennies.
Hey chucklehead, face reality...It's OVER for us. I am still with the company and know the train has left the station. You realistically think you will survive another 6 months. The company and industry cannot sustain it. Yes, I like making my salary and the bennies that go along with it, but even a bonehead like you has to wake up from your haze and see that this gig is up. Polish off your resume, Wal Mart is calling.
Or, Pfizer could double the number of managers, WHAMs, RAMs, AMs, PMs, MAMBY-PAMBYs, etc. Dump all the sales people, and go with a HUGE group of managers. We could even hire people to hold city-wide smoking cessation parties that cost $20 million and generate 3-4 Chantix scrips. That'll show 'em.
Look at the most recent article on the home page of Cafe Pharma, saying Pfizer will exceed the originally proposed 15% (next phase) of cuts from when it bought Wyeth. So get ready, they've announced it. It will be another roller coaster ride of fear, lack of trust with coworkers and managers, people trying to "prove" themselves worthy of staying, useless meetings, rumors, ratings, numbers, and all the crap to make you lose their mind by the time the cuts actually come.
Good luck, there's not much you can do to impact their decisions, we all know top notch people are often cut and it's usually a blessing once you get over the initial shock.
The problem is that the industry started paying way too much for the skills of pharma reps in the late 80's/early 90's, and an entire generation of folks got accustomed to bloated salaries. Face it, there is no other industry in the country where reps with low end bachelor degrees can routinely surpass 100K without any shred of a specialized skill set. In most cases, folks would be jumping ship left and right if faced with FIVE YEARS of uncertainty, but pharma folks know there is no place to go that offers the same pay opportunities. As a result, this board is ripe with bitter and unrealistic people who have a distorted perception of what they're worth. You all want 100K+, but fail to realize that you have absolutely ZERO effect on physicians and their prescribing habits. It all comes down to CMS and HMO formulary decisions and we all know that we can cut 80% of the existing sales force to accomplish the same outcomes.
Ill stop short of lambasting the entire industry and calling all reps a bunch a worthless idiots like some do (some of the best and most talented people I know are pharma reps), but its time to face the facts. Get out now and get retrained/re-educated rather than wait for the inevitable to happen.
