Tom Lyon

He manages up well and manages down poorly.

Strong emphasis on managing down poorly. Tom, we get that you get off on making your CTL's and reps feel uncomfortable when selling to customers. However, thinking that there is a simple story for Gardasil, Zostavax and P23 is insane. If there was a simple story, it would have been done over a decade ago. Since you think you are one of the smartest minds in Merck, why don't you model for your region what good looks like. Why don't you tell us what the simple stories should be since you want to micromanage everything and you don't trust your reps to sell. Do something different for a change. Lead by example!

He's not a leader, just a loser. Remember, he usually finishes at the botoom of the region rankings. Also, people are continuing to leave the company under his watch. He is a cancer to the company.

Why is this fool, TL, flipping out over P23? The freakin' product is over 30 years old! Does he not realize we are in a launch mode of G9, which can be a legit billion dollar vaccine unlike Zostavax? Pfizer is a juggernaut and P13 is the only vaccine they have. Of course they are going to take some business! We've got 13 products but we get hounded over Zostavax and P23 which primary care offices barely want to use. Get a clue!

Hey Tommy- if you just stopped treating your managers and reps like they are dirt beneath your feet that you have to control every aspect of how they do their job, maybe, just maybe, you wouldn't be one of the most infamous Merck employees of all time. You get what you give!

It doesn't matter if the original thread got pulled. Those who have the misfortune of dealing with this self absorbed and arrogant micromanager will continue to remind the cafepharma audience TL's mismanagement of his region.

He is known and feared by other companies too. Nobody wants to work for him and I mean NOBODY!!! His reputation as an underqualified, inept micromanager is legendary.

April 2015 numbers look good Tom so please stop nagging your region like a whiney old broad that we are not executing hard enough. Get a life and relax!

His numbers should look good. After years of sales mediocrity eventually the growth and objective will follow. It's easy to grow when they stunk for half a decade.

I know there are people on this board who probably think there is no way most of things that are said about this man are true and it must be one or two disgruntled employees trying to make him look bad. One thing is for sure. Since TL has been the multi-specialty DCO for Vaccines (January of 2011 until now), the CTL's from Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky, Wisconsin and Illinois have all stepped down from their CTL role to take other positions to get away from this guy. One CTL stepped down last year to be a rep which is rarely ever done in Merck. That is a total of 6 CTL's within 4 years. When you have a director lose a total of a half a dozen CTL's within 4 years, you know you aren't a very good director.

How is he still around when he appears to perform below expectations for a DCO?

The people he reports to are below standard as well.

Rejects from Pharma continue to plague Merck Vaccines. There may be more Vaccine sales being made in this division but the reputations of the reps have deteriorated because they don't act like consultants anymore - they act like pushy know-it-alls who know more about healthcare than the providers.

Look Tom, if you are so hell bent on having your reps be able to robotically puke out a simple story for the core products, why don't you personally provide examples at the Fall Meeting. You have no problem criticizing the reps' detailing behind their backs to your CTL's but you offer no solutions.

Part of being a director is to lead by example, not just complain and dictate unrealistic expectations. Show us what good looks like if you are not satisfied and make sure you do it with Jan in the room. This is your chance to show how really smart you are and the reps will actually have some concrete guidance from you for a change. Lead us oh great leader. Share your simple stories!!!!!

You are dirt. Don't forget that. I slide one of you out of my ass every morning.

Even without a stupid simple story we are making plan for our top products. People like Jan and Tom will continue to step on necks unnecessarily to look good so they can get to the next level. It ain't about you, it's all about them. Sad.
