Specialty pharma salaries vs. biotech salaries

At a startup doing precommercial field work w genetic testing. 225K base 15K quarterly bonus 850mo/.58 mile car allowance plus RSUs/options, benefits, espp.. A lot of travel but stay and eat where we want within reason.

Opinions?

Don't do it! This is how they trap you - bait and switch. This applies to any sales job in the industry today.

I have worked in oncology for 20 years and I called it a “soul crushing job” because there are SO many reps in oncology that a lot of accounts (especially in the northeast) won’t see any reps. It’s quite depressing to spend your days getting almost nobody to talk to you. I’m in rare disease now and I have had some of the best clinical conversations and doctors actually WANT to talk to me way more than in oncology. My rare disease job is so much more gratifying. I agree with the salary ranges you quoted and also agree that the big companies pay less. The small companies pay more but there is more risk and sometimes the benefits are not as good.

To the last poster, I'd love to know what rare disease co you work for? Great to hear that you are finding good access. I sell in rare disease, Neuro-neuro muscular disease and the access is tough! I know Oncology reps make great salaries but there is no access....so many companies and products.

Any advise on just how to break into rare disease? Or a good biotech company, in general? I have 20 years experience in the industry, both primary care and specialty. But I'm tired of the big pharma culture and know that my salary isn't close to what it could be elsewhere. Recruiters/headhunters? Simple networking?

And how do your days differ vs primary care or big pharma specialty?

More respect from the speciality offices towards the reps. More of a consultant and don’t carry samples which also really helps differentiate from all the Pharma reps.

Where do I start?? PharmTox BS, and doing MS right now (oncology focused). I don’t want to be a lab slave & want to make big money. I have no experience in sales, no experience in general except cell culture & flow cytometry.
How do I break in oncology sales as a newbie? Located in Philly

Looking for some advice here. I’m in medical device sales, working in the operating room and interventional radiology, calling on neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, and interventional radiologists. I’ve worked my way up to where I am and am proud of what I’ve accomplished. Making good money, mostly all in commission with a low base. That said, I work long hours and definitely do not take any days off, even working some weekends. I know from previous roles in generic injectables that the pay was decent and the work life balance was great. Would a biotech company hire someone with a background like mine? I work for the leader in all of medical devices. Thanks.
