So who is packin?

Both Mr. Dump and I do. I got mine last year when I was travelling the hills of Tennessee - that was PHo's idea and I thought it a good one. But I don't carry one. Mr. Dump has had his for a few years. I also keep a small derringer on the back of the nightstand. And then I also have 2 very ferocious dogs - combined weight is about 40 lbs.

Very nice. I won't go into too much detail but we are very well protected. I amparticularly fond of my Mossberg shotgun which I believe a much more effective household defense than a handgun, since you don't have to be a great shot to put down a bad guy

We live in a small house - I won't miss - it may not kill an intruder but it'll stop the person -- I figure my ferocious dogs will detain the person long enough for me to get good aim at the doorway - only one way in other than the window and that would be a really stupid move.

Of course, Mr. Dump and I don't spend too many nights apart -- may 6/year - he can take care of things if he's here.

I need to get into the spirit of living in Texas and get one myself. I have never shot a hand gun and I am open to suggestions on a first gun to own. I will first need to learn how to tear it apart, clean it, and then take the requisite gun safety classes. I am open to suggestions.

I would suggest starting with a .38 and working your way up

I keep a box of cookies in the cupboard and milk in the frig, if a crook comes, the plan is to warm up the cookies and serve warm cookies with a nice cold glass of milk - then while they're eating, I'll break out my guitar for a round of kumbaya.

@Libs - seriously, that's a good suggestion. I might also add that you need to get down to a firing range on a regular basis so you get the feeling of it. A handgun is the hands of an owner who doesn't know what he's doing can be more dangerous than no gun at all. If you miss (easy to do w/ a large caliber gun) you'll for sure be a dead man.

In Texas you can now carry in your car without a license. Start with a lightweight 9mm: ammo is cheap and readily available. Easy to shoot, easy to carry. Don't just go to the range. Find a shooting coach. Many who do CC classes also do personal lessons to teach you to shoot.

Personal: 9mm Ruger, Keltec .380, 12 guage Mossberg 500 with 18" barrel and pistol grip plus various hunting weapons. CC permit.

I have Indiana Conceal Carry and Illinois FOID card. No conceal carry in this ridiculous state of Illinois.

We have a Colt 38 Police Special (my favorite because of the long barrel) in the kitchen loaded; Russian Nagant 895 revolver in the bathroom loaded, Colt Mustang in the bedroom inside the nightstand loaded and the military issue Sig P228 in the closet loaded. We also have several 22s on the wall loaded. . . Our home-sweet-home. Oh, two stun guns and several hunting knives. I am really a big fan of my kitchen carving blade. As a cook, we used to goof around throwing the knives at a target. I got pretty good at that.

I love your sig line, GG. You are such a moderate. Wonder if the boys will slam you, too.

I would tell you about the 2 guns that my husband owns, but it would be TMI.

LOL - moderate!!! hahahaha!!!

Well, we have 148 guns, many antiques, some BB guns/pellet rifles and some automatics. The ones we have out are the ones we like. They may not be the most efficient killers but they are damn fun to shoot. I would probably have to throw the knife or go for the Sig. You have to remember we had four lovely individuals threatening to kill us weekly and when we won the lawsuit, I figured they would surely come and find us. I'm still waiting.

Good god....where to start. I do not pack personally but do own a gun. I am always with someone who is armed to the hilt. Our house is extremely well protected and I like it that way.

Libs, find someone who can teach you and take them with you to purchase a gun. A gun needs to fit the person...try out many different types. At the end of the day...you need to own a gun that you feel the most comfortable with.

Every house should have a shot gun...minimum.

I have a sense that no intruder is getting close to your house. Yeah, I may need to do this, have an expert go with me.
