Yes, they are cut off unless you enroll in COBRA which is a big headache with no help from anyone to keep the benefits going. COBRA is activated one to two months after your last day and after you have made your payments to COBRA and after verification is completed with an assurance that though it is approved later it is continued from last day of employment. However, if you go to a doctor before COBRA is activated, their office does not have information that you have COBRA activated insurance which should be the same as your current insurance. The current insurance has not received communication from COBRA about continued insurance and they decline your benefits. You then have to keep going back and forth with COBRA and your health insurance to get your benefits activated. It is an extremely difficult process and BMS benefits dept is completely hands off in this whole mess. To top it all, you are only allowed COBRA with BMS monthly insurance premiums for a limited time after which if you don’t cancel it immediately, you will be charged thousands by COBRA upto $4000 to $10000 and then you will be going back and forth to cancel it and go through more hassles. In the meantime, if you see a doctor after post BMS COBRA benefits expire, COBRA will keep chasing you for their thousands. You have to cancel COBRA immediately after BMS related COBRA benefits expire or else you will have to pay the extra high premiums. Confusing? If yes, then as soon as you get laid off, immediately ask everything you can related to medical benefits or anything else. Even the IT and people’s services will immediately discard you even though you are still working there. You will not be allowed to speak with any support as easily as you could before. You will have to send an email and wait for a response. Sometimes you get a response back and many times no one responds. Only those people with true hearts will respond to laid off people with compassion. Many don’t care.
