Severed Recently...

Don't know what is wrong with you, but no one has said that it is an employer's responsibility to save for their employees. The previous post was just stating the facts about how many people don't save enough for retirement, probably even you included. Just loosen up the brains cells long enough to understand how people think, then you would be attune to the fact that we live in a society where spending money you don't have is a way of life. Couple that with poor education on the need to invest and you end up with alot of people who have lived way above their means on credit, only realize the facts of life when its too late. And to your reccommendation of buying annuities, that is a really poor investment choice. Apparantly even you don't have a good enough education about investing wisely. I would not throw stones.

An annuity is better than nothing. that was my point.

Yes, I was responding to a previous poster who was talking about about having no pension "benefit", and not responding directly to your post.

Just save your money and don't live like royalty now. If the economy turns around hopefully you can ride the wave of prosperity.

I agree...these spoiled narcissists don't realize how difficult it has been for Phrma reps the past 5-7 years. All you reps w/ 20+ years in Phrma lived through days of better salaries, better bonuses, time/relationships with customers, stock options/RSU's/Pensions worth quadruple that of ours. Also, you never had to worry about losing your job. Can you blame us for being dejected and negative? We have lived through hell and pray to keep our jobs year after year. I have lived through 5 rounds of layoffs in the past 8 years. Most of the negativity on this site is a defense mechanism to sound as if we don't care about being laid off. The more we say how much the industry is dead and how little we care, the less bad we feel about being let go. Psychology101. Take a step back you 20+ reps and try to empathize with our generation of sales reps. As we attempt to advance our careers and build a better life for ourselves and family, we are only trapped in an era of downsizing, cost-cutting, and the disloyal employer.

Then quit if you do not like it!

The only things that I threw out there for discussion was that I was one of the fortunate one's to get severed with a decent package and am able to move on outside of this industry, wish all of you the best of luck, and, most importantly, I wish this board could either become a useful resource for those of you in industry, or for those looking to get in, or shut-down completely. That's all. The pain that some of you spoke of that you had to go through recently, I was right there along side of you. Again, keep your chins up and all the best...

Once again, there were plenty of challenges and restricting over the years, not just the past rive. We survived by hard work and little to no whining. As I read the thread, I am embarrassed to say these people are in the industry. A good part of why the respect has been lost. Stop whining and deal with what is dealt. Find other ways to prepare your retirement as most do not have pensions anymore. For that I do sympathize
 




Exactly what a true narcasist would say. Lets spell it out, its not about being unhappy, but unless you live under a rock these are very uncertain and stressful times in the workplace. Oh, I forgot that you would not feel that since you have the benefit of enjoying a pension after 25 years. You should feel fortunate and blessed. In todays climate, companies do not offer the great pensions that you are so able to benefit from now. Many large companies, like IBM, froze their pensions years ago, and in the next few years, it will be difficult at all to find a company that offers a pension to new or existing employees. Unfortunately, those who have enjoyed retiring under a good pension benefit plan, all too often, are too self-directed to care about the generations who will not have than benefit-----no matter how long they will stay with a company. Pfizer eliminated its pension to new employees. And just in case you want to respond like a dick thinking I'm just a newbie to the workforce. I will also be enjoying a retirement pension, unfortunately not as long as you have been because Pfizer will freeze my pension within a few years, EVEN IF I STAY FOR 25 YEARS LIKE YOU. I am just capable of understanding the value of what a pension offers in retirement that many younger than myself will not benefit from. Its called empathy!!!!!!

Layoffs of sales reps were far and few between. This was because if Wallstreet even got wind of an impending layoff, the stock price would plummet. Today it's the exact opposite. Those crooks on Wallstreet get a hard on when companies layoff and turn it into a short term price increase and profit from it.

It took an act of congress to get terminated for just about anything. Back then, HR protected the hell out of the employees. Probably because they knew too much and didn't want retribution in the form of lawsuits and criminal investigations.

Base salaries were just a bit below today's, but imagine how well that paid back then when the dollar was worth much more? Bonuses were about what today's are now, $20k/year, but everyone made bonus, not just the top half like today.

Stock options stock options stock options!!! I know drug reps who became millionaires practically overnite from the dotcom tech boom. Pharma stock prices were always quite low, but when the tech boom hit, the pharma stock prices boomed too. As long as they cashed the stock options out when vested, they made mucho money. Some held it for too long and went from millionaires to $100 thousand aires, but still made good money from the options or RSUs.
Today, we get low options if any at crappy sell off prices. A few bucks here and there if lucky.

Cars were free. No $115/mo charges crap. Meds were free. health insurance was free. Pensions for everyone that grew very well. Now, no pensions for newbies and they dickered with the interest rates regarding inflation and cost of living adjustments, so the lump sums are smaller as well as your payments will be upon retirement, if anyone can last in this company that long anymore.

Free healthcare for retirees. Now, it costs alot and they can take it away any time they please.

No reach and frequency or other god awful metrics. It was your territory, apply the 80/20 rule and have at it. Managers were selling partners in the field, not an asshole obstruction and relentless annoyance.

What is an embarressment is that what you are saying was not even brought up in the post you are commenting about. WTF are you talking about grandpa, the post did not say anything about a rep that was severed was based on performance, not tenure. Nothing like that was even said. Are you senile or something. BTW, I know several reps. that were displaced during that time period that were definitely severed because of tenure, they sued, and won. Typical general claims made that are inaccurate. There is one thing you are correct about.....you are part of the clueless downfall of a once respectable industry (I say that loosely).

By respectable reps back then, would you be talking about the ones who used to steal the competitive reps samples out of the sample closets, or the ones that used to get hooked on the narcotic meds. before the companies realized they needed to keep the narcs out of the reps. hands.

Well said ,my friend. My division got laid off in 2010,I got the old severance package,so I am fortunate because it was very generous. I am taking my money and running away from the sinking of the Titanic(also known as Pfizer). This company was not ruined by the reps or even middle management but by a succession of deadhead upper-management in that liberal shithole :New York.
