it is kind of comical how the ten layers of management still pretend this is a "sales" job. Everyone all the way up the chain keeps the bs flowing cause the summer home mortgages don't pay themselves.
I am retired after 20 years most as a DSM.I saw some great years, big bonuses, all before managed care became what it is today.
AZ ignored how managed care access was regional, and sales became more and more based on coverage. Starting about 2005 (class action), AZ started to micromanage, as a DSM I was spending more time protecting my team from the bullshit than sales training.
I finished as a Brilinta DSM, seeing bad reviews in areas where Reps were not allowed in the cath lab, not on any hospital formulary, elderly population where the patients can’t afford a branded, and a drug with little benefit with side effects that were causing DCs, and messaging about cost that was outright lies, Reps getting fired because they helped patients get coverage.
Hated the last two years. It’s managed care that ruined this profession
I have recently run into reps from other companies that have a ride along once per quarter..that would be a dream and I know our offices would greatly appreciate that!!Managed Care did not ruin this career it was a just a change in market conditions. What ruined this career was middle management not acknowledging changing market conditions. Instead of laying low on offices and realizing MC was here to stay and even get worse they pressured the Reps to try to breakdown unbreakable walls and cause stress between the MD offices and the Reps. which has resulted in more and more closed doors. Middle Management in it's infinite wisdom then made the call matrix more difficult than ever before since less and less MDs could even been seen. Throw in more than a few ego driven DMs that thought it would be cute to be AHoles to reps and now the current state of affairs in the Industry is just a horrible job choice.
Management fails to realize all of this to this day and every year the job gets worse. DMs need to have 20-25 Reps, work/withs need to be 1 per month if that and if you have 5+ years in 1 per quarter. DMs need to start acting and treating Reps like mature adults instead of 18 year old children. These are the same DMs that hire so called Adults then 8 weeks into the job turn around and treat the new hire like a child.
It's not a SALES job anymore it's Customer Service and as soon as management figures that out maybe the job will get a little better but the pay for this job is only a 55-60K Job if that anymore and NO college is needed.

You need to remember that DSM's ( at least in PCP world) have had their days in the field increased to levels that make no sense, especially with teams of 6-8. Ruud's expectations that DSM's spend that many days in the field only cause discontent on both the DSM and PSS.
I personally like when upper management says “we heard your feedback that you want MORE ride alongs with your dsm....” HAHAHAHAHAHA
it is literally ridiculous how much ours is with us. Only saving grace is that she isn’t a pain in the ass and only comes in makes a call does lunch then leaves. It’s stupid though because between my partners and I she is in the same offices over and over again as much as we are. It’s annoyinf to the offices and makes us look like idiots who need babysitting. So stupid!!!
NOBODY wants your opinion. The above posters are spot on the money. Older, mature rep here who has been in the business too long. What changes I’ve seen. This used to be a great job. I would not recommend it at all for young people just getting started.
Ride alongs are inspiring and I learned what my weakness was and corrected it.

why bring your manager to the same offices, what a waste. Talk about a pain in the ass for an office, going to the same one three times a week with the same message and giving 2 samples each time. I'm sure the staff finds your stories and baby pictures amazing!
