R&D

Amgen may suck when it comes to internal drug discovery but it also has a history of terrible acquisitions and in-licencing. Tularik, Ilypsa, Alantos, Abgenix etc. Total waste of money

seriously look at this and throw in kinetix, beta-HSD, avidia, even a blind squirrel finds an acorn every once in a while but not these guys.

They may have paid too much for Immunex to get Enbrel but they aquired some outstanding discovery research scientists who really knew how to come up with new targets. The really sad thing about this round of layoffs is that due to the "realigning" of R&D they will be getting rid of some very good scientists unlike the RIFs in 2007 where the weakest were culled. There is no way that Amgen will ever regain any sort of inhouse capacity for discovery, they are now just one of many biosimilar me-too companies.

What a crock. All the good Immunex scientists bailed after they got their one-year retention bonuses. Followed Doug Williams out the door. Wouldn't accept the Sharer/Perlmutter BS.

Wrong. The hatred of Doug Williams was palpable at Immunex after the buyout. Nobody followed him anywhere. Look at his track record since then.

Some good people left after the retention bonuses ran out, others left later when it became clear that Amgen did not value what they were doing.

There are still stellar scientists from the Immunex era at AWA, but they will be gone soon, voluntarily or otherwise. Senior management has made it clear that discovery research is not a valued endeavor.

You guys should start #Occupy Amgen until Kevin goes Steven Job's style and takes a $1 annual salary and gives the rest of his compensation to eliminate the lay-offs.

This is actually a good idea, if enough employees (at least a couple hundred) participate. It's atrocious that he was granted a $6 million raise earlier this year ($21 million annual salary) as a reward for all of his failures. As staff and shareholders, we need to communicate that this is not acceptable. A protest in front of B38 would be symbolically ideal, though a public intersection would ensure media coverage and that it's not immediately disbanded by Security. We could all wear goggles and lab coats to attract media attention and minimize the threat of retaliation.

KS and RP have the best interests of Amgen and the people that work for Amgen in mind.
This was a difficult decision for both of them. While the words ring hollow after such an announcement, please know that KS and RP spent many a sleepless night on the beach trying to come up with ways to keep the layoffs from happening.
"We will not do violence to R&D"
I salute them both.

really you did not just say that. In the same manner our friend RP said yesterday "we must live within our means"... wait hold on, can I get a king size bed in that new jet, is that living within your means? is that a reasonable expense in times like this. we all know the answers to this and even RP does. The fact that all they have to submit a proposal to the board to get what they want is silly since all the folks on the board more than likely do not give a rats ass about Amgen having a new plane. The G5 is from the 80s so I guess we need a new replacement to fly the sales force to "blasts" or "swats" because according to RP that is cheaper than buying 10 economy class tickets. Really RP, you take us for morons so please keep your "do not do violence to R&D to yourself"

Sleepless nights on the beach in each other's arms whispering sweet nothings and engaging in pillow talk, no doubt.

Just where is the grass any greener? Pfizer just gutted their R&D and I suspect this is a trend industry wide. It comes down to leadership in tough times as well as good times. It's not easy to run a drug company but you also have to know when you are in over your head because in bad times the leadership should come through for the employees who make the company what it is and not the shareholders. If you have a great company the shareholders will be there and if not you don't kiss the shareholders asses but you change leadership to keep it great! I wish everyone the best who gets affected by this and hope that a better opportunity comes their way! Chin up all!

What about the partnerships Amgen holds, wouldn't it be easier to cut the FSP models that hires the CRAs cut out excess management.

Will CRAs be effected both in US and UK anyone?
