Propping up a phony job: Depressing or Debilitating

Driving around in the company car, even trying to do this job as instructed is almost impossible...no one really wants to see a drug rep anymore, accept for lunch...

the whole thing is a total charade...glad I am getting out of this racket...

Hope it didn't take you long to figure out the pharma rep gig is mostly game. It's a great first job for a kid but a deadend for anyone looking to be treated as an adult. Good luck in your future endeavors.

It took me about the last 3 years of my 8 in the industry to finally get up and get out of that mindless existance. Now I am back to selling and loving it and actually feel like my customers value me and what I bring to the table. Good luck.

You get 2 cents/paper. Its all about high volume business. You'd be amazed how fast 2 cents per paper adds up when with internet sales we have in excess of 100,000 subscribers. Do the math and I think you'll quickly see what I'm talking about. Its a real business without some dorky manager babysitting my every move.

Its only a phony job for a few more months, the end of the line is coming in first quarter 2012 for a large portion of the port 1 reps, reason for layoffs will be dulera way below plan, just know its coming, accept it, and prepare for it.

Look around and you can see "the keepers"... S3s, special project reps, sr exec reps, and most executives. Others (S1 or S2 wothout the right title) are probably in the pending layoff slots....its my uninformed take... but you dont need to be a rocket scientist to figure it out. Question is...can you move into the keeper group by 2012?

Another question: Do you even want to be in the "keeper group"? With a job so depressing and debilitating, best to move on in 2012. Now is the time to plan for a new life.

Great advice here, unless you're marked by age and within sight of retirement eligibility. Then you want to manuver like hell as best you can to be a "keeper" since you'll not likely find a similarly lucrative job outside mutha, depressing, debilitating, and phony though she may be.

We should be getting some advice if we're in the "can manuver" group....why arent tmanagers pointing out places to go?

as another poster noted, do you really want to be kept?? seriously?? To continue on a road to nowhere, that no other industry respects or values? the drug rep job is pretty much dead...how could any even semi-intelligent person take this farce seriously?? The drug companies brought this mess upon themselves...corporate greed...corruption...

and what really brought Merck down was social engineering...

A wise move is to get out before the cuts...lock in a new job now if you are under 50. Over 50 wait it out and hope for at least some type of bridge pension and health related.

Propping up a phony job: Depressing or Debilitating or both??

Never in my wildest dreams could I have foreseen Merck become an employer to avoid due to their bad management/human resource practices. Another great American tragedy that may have been preventable with better succession management, or successful management for that matter.

This job is so different from when I began years ago. I am planning for my future without Merck, which I assume is near. It is not even the same job. These metrics are insane and truly have nothing to do with the business of selling.

Kind of sad? When I was new a few decades ago I would introduce myself to physicians and pharmacists as their new Merck rep. Their eyes would lit up, smiled, and welcome me. Some would ask how did I beat that many candidates to join this well respected company. They said they may also use products by other companies but in their minds, Merck was the King of R&D and ethics.

I can relate well to this having joined Merck in 1981. Now, nobody with under 10 years at Merck could relate to this. So sad indeed. Add 30 to 1981 and I'm outta here. I'm so glad to no longer need to swallow all the "change" propaganda as being necessary and good for Merck. Anybody of average intelligence could tell that the changes that have occurred at Merck over the past 30 years and especially the last 15 have been more bad than good. The good seemed to leave around the time Keller and company left. It's been a mess around this place ever since as far as I can tell. Good luck people, you're going to need lots of it.

Most of the reps are busy but still can't get to see many doctors for much more than a quick sign and go. We're weighted down with busy work, too many products, conference calls, meetings and all for products about to be launched into generic orbit.....with us in tow. It is depressing and debilitating and any plan B needs to be non-pharma at this point.
