Pfizer planning layoffs, targeting US sales reps
Associated Press December 04, 2012

Save NEW YORK — Drug maker Pfizer Inc. is starting another round of layoffs, targeting US sales representatives who promote Pfizer primary care medicines to doctors.

The New York Viagra maker has not detailed how many salespeople it employs, how many will leave, or when that will happen. Individual salespeople haven’t been notified whether they’ll be furloughed.

A Pfizer spokesman confirms changes are coming but says details about the sales force are proprietary.

In a statement, the world’s biggest drug maker says it continually evaluates how to be more efficient and best allocate money and staff to serve customers.

Generic competition to popular drugs such as Pfizer’s cholesterol blockbuster Lipitor means they’re not promoted anymore.

But reps are needed to promote a big anticlotting drug awaiting approval and current big sellers like pain treatment Lyrica.

Translation: Promoting via sales reps in PC is no longer a profitable strategy. More and more group practices owned by provider corps and hospital groups, doors closed to PSSs, , dictated to by government and managed care formularies. Face it, we are going the way of the 8 track tape player and the VCR.

You said "we". That's funny.
We as in all of us. Every company will follow down this same road until our jobs are totally obsolete. Hell, they practically are now. You are fooling yourself if you think otherwise. Ask yourself, would you pay what you get paid to do what you do if it was your company?
Of course not and neither will AZ once Pfizer and other big Pharma companies eliminate their PC sales forces.

But you don't work in pharma anymore. It's painfully obvious by your posts.

That's why the "we" was funny. The "our" in your latest post gave me a chuckle as well.

Oooohhh, you really burned the anonymous poster, didn't ya?

I guess you enter enough fake calls to doctors you never actually see that you start thinking the thing that matters is what you type.

Enjoy the car, paycheck, and benefits while they last.

Good point about what would you do if it was your company! We all know that if management actually realized how little influence we really have over prescribing habits, 80% of us would be gone overnight. I am totally surprised that AZ has not announced a MAJOR layoff yet.

20% of reps have good influence. Without reps no management.

Why would you think the OP isn't in Pharma anymore? Why so defensive? Do you think only those outside the industry can see what's happening? Face it, the jig is up--now start polishing your greetings for the big Walmart gig.
