Performance Plans

Rode with my DM this week. According to her I am under-performing now I am now on a 60-day plan with about 10+ hours of extra busy work each week. I have only been in this industry a little over two years. Of course, I started crying but she didn't care. She has NEVER said one positive thing. It also sounds like there are many others on plans after talking to friends from training. Is this the direction the company is headed?

Also, If after 60 days I haven't improved then we move on to something else. Is there any chance of getting off this thing or is it formality from here on out? Also, what happens on day 60?

Any suggestions on recruiters or other industries that would good to work in?

If you don't pass the 60-day plan then you progress to a 90-day plan-more busy work. They are trying to push you out. You will not see any positive remarks on your FCR going forward. Document everything! Call HR on any and everything, get a lawyer if needed.

So what specifically should we document? If the FCR is negative for example, should I be documenting positive things that really do occur or take place? I was actually thinking I should just record every phone conversation, field ride, POA etc. I heard of a rep in MN recording stuff and then using it against his DM. That may be a total rumor though.

You CANNOT, let me repeat, CANNOT record conversations etc. with someone if they are not aware you are recording them. It will never hold up in a court of law. It's not illegal to record a conversation but it's basically useless, unless you have the person's permission to record them. In fact, it could actually backfire. If somebody tried to record my conversation to get me in trouble I would sue the pants off the company. With that being said, if you think you're working hard and being micro-managed, start getting other irons in the fire. Update your resume and start looking at what else is out there. Life is too short to be completely miserable.

If this is true, you are done with the company. They are wanting to get rid of you and have 60 days. Even if your numbers change, they will find something else. Interview like crazy and get another job, right before the 60 days are up (if you don't get another gig)...go on medical leave. Fuck them, they can't do shit about it. It will buy you some more time and drive that bitch crazy.

Good advice if you are stuck in this situation. Many DSI reps have followed this path to buy time and get a check. This company's morals are cancerous, get out ASAFP!

Don't believe this!!! In most states a conversation may be recorded as long as one party (you) know that the conversation is being recorded. Don't believe me...check your state laws. To the OP, you are being "managed" out. My advice.....with the way the economy is. Get placed on some type of disability (psychological would be best) so that the company cannot fire you. I am not, nor have I ever been a person to suggest someone "take advantage" of the system. However, I have seen many people fired and placed on plans for issues which were not in any way the individuals fault or responsibility. My advice....fight back by playing the system.

Agreed. Contact your EAP and start psychotherapy ASAP. Once you're under the care of a mental health professional, tell them how this PIP situation is stressing you out and making you go crazy. Then get a psychiatrist to give you 6 months of medical leave if possible. This will give you time to chill out, look for another job while getting paid (60 or 75 pct) and having healthcare benefits. Don't let them bully you into leaving empty-handed. If they want to get rid of you, make them pay and do it on your own terms, not theirs.

not true...check the state you live in. Where I live it IS legal.

I am a former employee. I like to go on cafe pharma occasionally for s**ts and giggles. I was put on a plan last year for "poor performance" and "not moving doctors through sales cycle". i was in the top 100 in the country. Pretty much, my manager didnt like me and wanted me out. My manager was a new manager and it felt like i was made an example by the RD (MW).

No matter what i did, how much time i put in doing paperwork, it didnt matter. my manager's opintion was subjective. i was told the amount of work i was doing was what everyone else was doing. NOT TRUE.

I was being worked to the point where they wanted me to quit. i broke down multiple times and just hated my life ( i had no life). I did not want them to win, i knew that if i quit, i walked away with nothing. I updated my resume, started searching for a new job. I did not get a job before i was fired for 'poor performance'. i was still in the top 100 at this time. but because i did not give in, i was able to get unemployment.

I do not recommend trying to go on medical leave, i have a friend who tried doing that, but with our crappy cigna insurance, his claim for short term disibility was declined. he had to fight for FMLA to even have a job to go back to until he got another job. cigna looks for employees doing that and will do whatever they can to not pay.

Due to everyone in america knowing the state of the pharma industry. i told potential employeers i was layed off. no one asked any questions. now i am much happier OUT of the industry.

GET OUT but DONT quit....this is my advice.

My manager hired all her reps and has 7 out of 10 on performance plans because we will never be as good as a rep as she was!! How does this not look bad on her? She kills all of us on our FCR and PE's. The RD has to do something, she is killing us. When our numbers are great we still suck in her eyes. Nor will she sign off on a transfer. She doesn't think we are qualified to work for another DM. We have more to learn and she has more to teach! According to my FCR's I am not qualified to sell burgers at McD's.

sooo true! The managers that were reps at this company when they had a sales force of 50 think they are the best ever. They called on 15 docs are lived in those offices. Some how they got promoted?!?!? Had a meeting the other day and it was totally worthless. Went over numbers and some azor message. Not motivating at all. Maybe if we had some coaching on what she wanted us to do before she rode with us we could then meet "her" expectations. Well prob not cuz as soon as we do that she wants something different. Her way of making herself seem useful. How did these people become mangagers? REALLY?!?!?!

Our stories are very similar. I was in the MW as well and my charge for dismissal was a bogus "failure to follow company policy."

My DM was cool (I thought), till all this went down. Sad story. Faithful as I stayed, I returned to my roots (science BS, completed an MS within a year) and work for a more lucrative biotech CRO...
My advice to any pharma "representative" is that know that you are as dispensable as tissue-paper. Do your best to have options lined up for life after pharma because sure as the sun will rise tomorrow, your tenure will end.

All the best, guys.
