Over thirty years in the business and I’m so tired of the hamster wheel.

Currently working for a small biotech that is the worst and most unprofessional organization that I’ve seen in a long time. I’ve been interviewing for the past 6 months and it’s been a grind. The process now is endless, and I actually feel like I’ve had a colonoscopy after some of these interviews. I’m 57, male, and wish I could find something else worthwhile that could actually give me professional purpose again. The industry has so significantly changed over the years. Curious if anyone else is facing, or has faced this dilemma, and what have you done about it. I’m tired and feel that I’m not valued anymore. Thank you for any honest opinions.

First of all,rep jobs and first line manager jobs are good jobs. With that said, you should have advanced in your career by now. For people in their late 50’s, they should be planning their retirement versus thinking about a next step in a career. As such, think about what you are doing to secure your retirement (maxing out retirement, eliminating any remaining debt, downsizing, etc.).

Not advancing my career was a personal choice that I made long ago. My life and personal pursuits are much more important than selling my soul to advance my career. Just curious if others feel the same way and are facing a similar situation. Thank you for your input.

It sounds like you lacked the skills and/or track record to advance your career. When you say that you don’t feel ”valued” that tells us that you are not perceived as being a high performer at your job and that you are soon to be let go. If you are not ready for retirement, you should be in panic mode.

Think about it from an employer perspective. Why would you hire a 57 year old rep/1st line manager? They must not be that good if they haven’t advanced in their career by that time. They also think that a 57 year old is not going to have the same drive and energy as someone is their 20’s or 30’s.

You need to focus on getting financially set for retirement. Your working days could be numbered.

I have a history of success that is documented and my reputation amongst my peers in previous companies, as well as with former clients is very solid. Some people are satisfied with being in sales and not advancing their career into management. Being valued for years of success along with non quantitative skill sets are a rarity today. Chasing only numbers after 30 plus years has lost its luster. Especially in this AI dominated business that is now more focused on process rather than people. I’m financially in a good place. Just looking to see if others are in a similar situation.

That is the typical response of a low performer. They always tell us how great they are. High performers move forward with their careers and adjust with the changes in the working environment. Look at your own words. You say that you are not valued by your company. High performers are always valued by their companies. Low performers are not.

You couldn’t be more wrong. Organizations don’t care about anything or anyone but metrics. Throughout the course of my career I’ve known countless successful people with multiple presence clubs being displaced. Obviously you’re just looking for confrontation. why keep responding to my comments? Move along.

There is nothing wrong with metrics. They are used to tell us who is actually out working versus those hanging out at the mall or sitting at home watching t.v.

Just look at your profile. Why would anyone hire you? You are 57 years old and haven’t progressed in your career in all these years. Meanwhile, you have admitted that you don’t like change and you don’t like to have your performance measured. Notice that all you have done is just complain and haven’t mentioned why anyone should hire you. It looks like you don’t bring anything to the table. From an employer perspective, you appear to be a liability.
