Older reps

I am not an older rep. I respond to their job postings and I never even get a response back from anyone. There is a glut of pharm reps now, no matter where you look. Novartis is getting ready to dump a bunch of reps in April 2012. We all need to move on and do something else! PDI is a clown organization as well. Don't take it personally older reps, the industry is in a decline.

Big problem for the older reps. Competition and blatant age bias does exist....

Older reps need to be prepared for a rude awakening....if theyve been here for 20 years its a good package but few years in means very little money and even fewer jobs....

And someone also thinks you cannot write a complete sentence. I thinks someonez things you too old now to.

Actually these are complete sentences. I am not the original author, but loved your ignorance at saying they didn't write in complete sentences. Each one of those sentences is a complete sentence.

I have had several Inventiv interviews and lost out to younger-much younger reps...I think it is what the clients are wanting so the Ventiv management caters to their demands, but in some cases, it is age discrimination as the candidate that is older could make a case that they are more qualified than the younger-chosen rep

You're wrong, the client has nothing to due with what sales reps we hire unless it is a client managed project for which thier managers do get to select the reps. It's more about how that manager feels about which of the candidates he/she will best be able to work with. I could care less about age and more about how the rep and I would interact on a day to day basis.

I was just hired with InVentiv and I am older (in my 50s). I never felt once during the entire interview process that my age was a factor. I was also offered a position as a direct hire with a major pharmaceutical company 2 days later and again, I never felt age was an issue. Believe me, when I started this process of interviewing again a couple of months ago, I was concerned, but it turned out to not be the case in my situation.

Most people making comments here are letting their thoughts and others opinions influence them. Anyone can make a comment either good or bad, negative or positive. This is cafepharma anything posted here sould be taken with a grain of salt. The reality is that pharma is not what it once was and the fact that it's a dying industry and most opportunities are through a CSO is making people paranoid. Let's face it, the ride was noting less than a gravy train where people could make really good money and work less than 40 hours doing so. That being said most people don't want to simply walk away. Your best bet is to leave the industry or work for a CSO and be prepared for time off between contracts.

If you can work for the money, maybe its ok. Problem is who can?

People who probably can:

1. Independently wealthy
2. Retired on a fat pension and social security
3. Have a spouse making big bucks
4. Live in Timbucktoooooo.....with low cost of living
5. Anticipating a payoff from a major lottery win....check in the mail...
6. Living with roomates....or in mommy and daddy's basement

....I am seeing awfully low income from these jobs...especially for those who live in east and west coast.....it would be tougher than tough to make it..........

Hey, I know who you are; I interviewed you and your suit smelled like mothballs and your breath smelled like death. Did you have more experience on your resume? Yes. Did you have documentation to support it? No. Here's another hint - before you go on another interview, go to Sport clips and ask them to tweeze your nose hair and the tuft coming out of your ears.

Is there a cap on salary? What do you do when people are coming from high level experience and education making salaries 20,30, 40K or more higher for the same job? Adjusted up so they can live, or is the job so less demanding that they'll be able to find a part time job to least make up some of the difference they'll need...

It's generally a district average with a range of about 10K with the less experienced reps on the low end and the more experienced on the high end. I have never seen a salary higher than 70-72k but I have heard or highly specialized positions paying a bit more. I would say the average experienced rep regardless of experience is about 65 but it also depends on the actual contract and what the rep profile is. Bonus would be anywhere from 15-25 depending on the MS you grow. I would't say the job is less demanding the basic requorements are about the same less the programs. But again, if the contract had programs built into it than you would be responsible for them as well.

How can any company pay someone with advanced degrees, years of experience and a strong track record just 10K difference more than a newbee level rep....That 10K winds up as 5K after taxes which in turn is about 400 a month take home difference....

INCREDIBLE and no wonder people who are good leave.....the saying you get what you pay for is true....how in hell do you think people can live on the salary you are offering? In the end you will have revolving door with good people making rapid exits and the slackers and those just looking for a few bucks but no career hanging on...

Answer - because they can, and there are lots of unemployed reps willing to take less money rather than start over in another industry. I just ran into a cso rep who looked about 20...max. I'm sure she brings everything they need to the table! She had ZERO pharmaceutical experience - probably took the job right out of college for 45K. The CSOs will continue to populate the offices with these babes as long as they can prove that the contract is producing results to the hiring company, and pocket the profits made. Just plain business.

Doctors are educated last time I checked. Do they have respect for the IT grad who has not a clue about basic physiology and has not the slightest idea what medicine is all about? The answer is NO. If any company wants to RAISE their image and lend credibility to their sales people they should not be hiring the least educated and least likely to be able to navagate through medical data. It is incredible and in the end it will backfire....
