Novartis Insider - Let the Truth Be Told

It's always good to catch up on industry news through the Cafe Pharma blogs. BTW... have you heard that the world was going to end next week?

Hey you! Yeah, I'm talking to You, the one who's asleep. No one said the world is going to end. Why don't you just go back to watching your football games and continue your journey of partaking in the bread & circus provided to you. Keep on believing in what FoxNews, MSNBC, CNBC & CNN are telling you. Be sure to not read anything about history either.

Go ahead and come back here with your sarcasm and read the OP of this thread in about 12 months. We'll see how funny things are then. But don't worry as long as you can watch the NFL and your DWTS, you'll be fine, right? Because after all, those are the things that affect your life. Those are the things that keep your personal freedom and financial growth healthy, right?

I didn't know about Exelon Patch going generic. Thanks for sharing OP.

I don't consider myself naive, however this news about Exelon Patch going generic is surprising (and somewhat scary).

Management has always been claiming the patent is good until 2016. Anyone else caught off guard by this disturbing news??

Yeah, why would Watson file for generic Exelon Patch if it had 5 years left?

While I agree our future as reps is grim and that Pharma's overall prospects are not good, you underestimate Novartis as an organization. True our mid-level and even national leadership is near-sighted, but at the highest levels they are no dummies. This is by design, Novartis is highly centralized and expects nothing from most leadership but to follow marching orders.

What they tell you and what they discuss in the inner sanctum are completely different. They know the outlook is grim for pharma and they are getting ahead of it by slashing pharma at all levels. Yes, Europe and US markets are likely to decline that is why they are investing hugely in "developing" markets. They are also the worlds 2nd largest generic manufacturer. That is why they are investing heavily in other areas such as diagnostics. Gen meds is practically over and you will see more investment in high dollar targeted therapies and speciality meds.

They need to keep you believing up until the moment they don't need you. That is why all the rosy pipeline stories and future projections. You need to let go of the theory that what is bad for you is bad for the company. Once you realize that you are a chess piece things become clearer.

As for the "save for a rainy day" theory, Novartis is sickeningly cash fat. The expenditures you mentioned are a drop in the bucket. These cuts are needed because the business model has changed not because we don't have the money to pay people.

Diversity and Inclusion is only a recent focus for financial reasons. The government and lawyers are the largest blood suckers known to man. Companies can no longer look the other way since the penalties are so steep. If you spent 1/2 your time on compliance it would still be more cost effective than paying hundreds of millions or more in penalties.

I am no happier with Novartis than you and they deserve to go down in flames for their abusive treatment of employees, patients and customers, but I am convinced that they will be around and successful for a long time partly because of their disregard for the above.

Can the OP please post some more of his/her thoughts....I haven't read anything that comes close to this. Extremely clear, concise, and so well written. The thoughts conveyed are crisp and direct.

Whoever you are - you are a very unique thinker....it would be interesting to sit down with you for an hour to chat about the industry and the world.

You have the gift of writing my friend.....

Everyone should read the book Aftershock by Dr David Weidemer. Mr. Weidemer is a brilliant economist which I had the opportunity to learn about in my MBA program. I was one of the many laidoff last year from Novartis and I for one will never go back into Pharma. Our domestic and global economy is headed for a meltdown and many industries such as Pharma are going down with it. We are living in a Global bubble with many bubbles ready to burst such as the dollar, stock market, and discretionary spending bubble. Europe and the US continue to print money at enormous rates that are creating bankruptcy, inflation, and high unemployment.

Many Wall Street experts predict that Novartis will cut 40% of their sales force which does not include the 900 they discussed in October. The NE President Mr. Kaplan(Spooky Dude) has resigned so what does that tell you. This is one of many phases that will be occuring for the next 3-5 years. In the end 80-90% of all sales forces will be gone. The industry will be getting out of Pharma and concentrating on specialty markets and KAM models. These will also eliminate jobs. As one Astra Zeneca CEO said" in 5 years 90% of our sales force will be gone and what sales are left will be done on web-cams and edetailing. Scary but true.

Many of you must think of a career change because take it from someone who has experienced a layoff last year. There are no new jobs in this industry and medical devices are just as hard to get into. I have decided that a career change is the best thing. My research has concluded that a Fed career or University career is probably the best bet. Very good pay, great benefits, and they pay for school. Also, engineering and computer science is leading the way again. I have decided to go back for my second masters degree in comp Sci/MIS. Its a hard decision but everyone must seriously consider tsome kind of career change if you want to survive.

I think the OP is a Mark Steyn wannabe. Hey Chicken Little! Your sky may be falling but I'm gonna be just fine. I don't trust overly pessimistic people any more than I do overly optimistic people. Not saying layoffs won't happen. I just don't think the future of NVS is tied to the global Apocalypse.

To the sycophants who jumped right on this gloom and doom bandwagon started by the OP. Crack a brew, turn on some Jimmy Buffet and fucking relax.

I will have to say you are the one who is unrealistic. I was one of the 1500 let go last Dec. and many reliable sources such as WSJ, marketwatch, and economists have said that there will be a 40% reduction in the sales force this spring. Ths does not include the 900 that was discussed in October. I think you need to go back to school and get an MBA to understand economics. This person who wrote the article is right on about what is happening. We are in an economic global meltdown with our domestic economy heading in the same direction. This industry has been severely effected and will continue to see severe pain. As one Astra-Zeneca CEO quotes,"80-90% of their sales force will be gone in 5 years due to many companies leaving the Pharma market and what sales remain will be in edetailing and web-cam technology."

I recommend another career or going back to school and improving your common sense.

Chris Kaplan resigned???? And when did this happen??

Chris Kaplan resigned???? And when did this happen??

Yesterday. It is believed that he has taken an early retirement package. Also the RAM RD Rich Porecca has taken an early package. I heard straight form the horses mouth. What does this mean? Well does everyone know what happened to the people that didnt get off the Titanic. Well Novartis is the Titanic and Kaplan and his boys jumped off before she hits the iceberg. The iceberg will be here in April/May and 40% will go down with the ship. Maybe could be worse and be more like Pearl Harbor.

Only the shadow knows.

Bombs away. Bonzi as the kamikazes would say.
