I am obviously not understanding the + or - on these games -- and neither is Mr. Dump. How about taking a look at my notations in red in post # 20 and tell me which ones I goofed on figuring out.

DD,

Ok I am going to go through each game to give you a better idea about how the point spread works. It's actually a lot of fun and also very challenging.

THURSDAY OCT 3rd

1. UCLA VS. UTAH +4 (I may be too late for this -- so if I am, it won't count, right? (FINAL SCORE: UCLA 34 UTAH 27) You got this one wrong because you picked UTAH to beat UCLA straight up. UTAH was given 4 points. So this means that UCLA had to beat UTAH by more than 4 points which they did.

FRIDAY OCT. 4th

2. BYU VS. UTAH STATE -6 (FINAL SCORE: BYU 31 UTAH STATE 14) You also got this one wrong because you picked UTAH STATE to beat BYU by more than 6 points. BYU won straight up.

SATURDAY OCT. 5th

3. MARYLAND VS. FSU -15 (FINAL SCORE: FSU 63 Maryland ) FSU beat Maryland by more than 15 points. You got this one wrong because you chose Maryland to keep the final score at less than 15 points.

4. GA TECH VS. MIAMI

5. CLEMSON VS. SYRACUSE +13 (FINAL SCORE: CLEMSON 49 SYRACUSE 14) You got this one right because Clemson beat Syracuse by more than 13 points.

6. GEORGIA VS. TENNESSEE +10.5 (FINAL SCORE: Georgia 34 Tennessee 31) You got this one wrong because you picked Georgia to beat Tennessee by more than 10 points.

7. ARKANSAS VS. FLORIDA -10.5 (FINAL SCORE: FLORIDA 30 ARKANSAS 10) You got this one right because Florida beat Arkansas by more than 10.5 points.

8. LSU VS. MISS STATE +9.5 (FINAL SCORE: LSU 59 MISS STATE 26) You got this one wrong because you picked MISS STATE to keep the final score within 9.5 points. For instance to win this game the final score would had to be: LSU 59 MISS STATE 50

9. TCU VS. OKLAHOMA -11 (FINAL SCORE: OKLAHOMA 20 TCU 17) You got this one wrong because you chose Oklahoma to beat TCU by more than 11 points.

10. WASHINGTON STATE VS. CAL

11. WASHINGTON VS. STANFORD -6.5 (FINAL SCORE: Stanford 31 Washington 28) You got this one wrong because you picked Stanford to beat Washington by more than 6.5 points.

12. OLE MISS VS. AUBURN +3 (FINAL SCORE: Auburn 30 Ole Miss 22) You got this one wrong because you picked Ole Miss to beat Auburn by more than 3 points.

13. ARIZONA STATE VS. NOTRE DAME +6 (FINAL SCORE: Notre Dame 37 Arizona State 34) You got this one wrong because you picked Arizona State to beat Notre Dame by more than 6 points.

14. OHIO STATE VS. NORTHWESTERN +5
(FINAL SCORE: Ohio State 40 NORTHWESTERN 30) You got this one right because Ohio State beat NORTHWESTERN by more than 5 points.

When there is a -5 It means that the team has to beat their opponent by more than 5 points.

When there is a +5 The team has to keep the final score within 5 points for you to win.

Was that a helpful explanation?

Drug Dumper, Ok I thought I would give you a few more examples.

When I look at point spreads I look at them this way:

Clemson Vs. Syracuse +13 (Syracuse is the Home Team and they have to keep the final score within 13 points if you picked them) They are essentially "getting 13 points."

The home team is always the 2nd team listed. You Chose Clemson to beat Syracuse by 13 or more points. (FINAL SCORE: Clemson 49 Syracuse 14)

Here is another example:

Arkansas Vs. Florida -10.5 (Florida has to beat Arkansas by 10.5 points)

You chose Florida to beat Arkansas by 10.5 points.

(FINAL SCORE: Florida 30 Arkansas 10) You got the pick right because Florida beat Arkansas by more than 10.5 points.

Not to whine but I only posted 13 games cause I was late. Still came out 4-10. Does a non post count as a loss?

VAG-Sorry about that. I made the proper change. It does not count as a loss. The wins are really what helps the player over the course of the season.

Do you think I gave a good explanation of how the point spread works to Drug Dumper? I tried to be as descriptive as possible.

Thanks, what kills me is that I had UCLA picked on my printout but forgot what day it was - thank you for the consideration.

I thought your explanation was as good as it could be. Maybe FT and Tink will chime in. Years ago I had a restaurant, lots of cash, was single and played a lot of pro & college bets thru local bookies. My best season was when I took all the dogs. It didn't seem logical but I always won. Maybe I'll try it again here once. I'm glad there's no real money involved here - thanks for setting up an enjoyable board.

Thank you.....I'm going to print this out.

It's tough getting old. But blondes have never been known to understand math, right?

As you know Saban really hates the media. He acts like press conferences are a major inconvenience and waste of his time. There is a big commitment of time from the the Texas Head Coach to The Longhorn Network. I also wonder if the major wealthy donors would let him have total control of the program. ..

Excellent point BB. Do you remember the time when Saban went nuts on the press and said (and I'm paraphrasing) "Do I need to go back to West Virginia and relearn to talk hillbilly so that you people can understand what I am saying?"

That's what I like about Saban. He has no time for bullshit.

I feel so bad for Cecil Hurt of the Tuscaloosa news sometimes. He has been covering Saban since he got to BAMA. Cecil now just paraphrases his questions with, "Coach I have to ask this question...."

I cannot comment because I am also still sometimes confused on the spread. Thank you BAMABOY for the explanation-- it helped me.

I think I have to go back to my old way of picking games-- this year I am over analyzing each game- and it is not working.

I'm gonna go back to picking based on how much I like the uniforms.....
