Merck Research

Today Merck announced impact of Esai collaboration on earnings, 1.1 Billion dollars!!!
Numerous charges over the past 3 years spent on collaborations.

Why can't Merck Labs discover these types of drugs? The small molecule pipeline looks empty relative to what they had several years ago. What happened and can MRL ever get back to where it is productive in this space again?

What knuckleheads are running the labs?

Peanuts compared to what Peter Kim misspent.

I’m not sure if you’re aware, but the labs have had numerous mass layoffs over the past 5 years. Not many people left in the labs. Boston is supposed to be this center for innovation, i.e. new targets to go after, but nothing has come out of Boston. With regard to the other sites, it’s hard to discover things when the businessmen outnumber the researchers. With what remains, the researchers concerns and input are constantly ignored.

The problem is most of the researchers and scientists would have been classified with that special needs spectrum crap if they were in school today. They are not ignored. They just sound like r*****s and are laughed at.

Your post makes absolutely no sense. What qualifies researchers and scientists as “special needs”?

Wrong. MRL RY, WP discovered several compounds on the market today. The problem was that R&D leaders decided they could outsource the work and laid off too many scientists and destroyed the golden goose. It's true Merck lucked into Keytruda and didn't know what they were getting at the time of the merger.
Without strong Research division, the entire company will have problems. No one on the outside will know though because Keytruda's success will mask the disfunction going on inside the labs. Sad for the good ones remaining.

They are total f'ing r*****s. 20 years of doing zero point zero.

That drug was not discovered by SP or Merck. R&D should be outsourced. It's not like you bring value anyway. They will do nothing at half the cost. The only great scientists are in Boston. No layoffs there. We are actually hiring.

Stop being a idiot.

The last drug from RY was Januvia in 2006. WP hasn’t discovered anything in nearly 30 years. Boston has never discovered anything in 14 years. All of Merck’s recent drugs are from SP acquisition or international (Organon, MF). Sorry, but all the US labs ain’t worth shit!

Several discoveries in past 15 years in Merck labs. In addition to Januvia
-CGRP atogepant was discovered in MRL and now doing well in human studies at Allergan

launched
-Belsomra
-Isentress
-Zepatier all discovered and launched by MRL
- niraparib PARP inhibitor discovered in MRL, developed and launched by Tesaro

If Belsomra and Zepatier is the best MRL discovery can claim for over 20 years work then it’s game over for Merck.

You're joking, right?

We've literally closed our corporate HQ and eliminated over half of our employees. We are essentially down to one Primary Care drug and one Oncology drug. The Primary Care drug is nearing patent expiry. We stumbled into the Oncology drug. It's been game over at Merck for many, many years.
