Merck Research Labs in Boston

I agree that MRL Boston is the next research site to close - should they decide to trim the budget as Wall Street is suggesting.

It's a cushy job here, but in all honesty, we aren't producing much value.

MRL Boston has positioned themselves to be shut down for several reasons. That site has too many kissing ass directors including RT's body from Montreal site, no deliverable and importantly the high maintenance cost.

Sorry to say, but the Boston site will live on - too many other Large Pharma companies in Boston for MRL NOT to have a presence (follow the leaders....???)

Oh man, is this real?

i am finishing a research stay in Harvard (I am from Spain) and I have been
offered a position as a post doc at MRL in Boston

Is it really so bad? I am not one of those ass suckers but a hard worker. The
salary if I stay at MGH/HMS is gonna be something around 37-40K, how much is
going to be in MRL?

I really would like to end up in industry and I thought MRL would be a good
starting point, but still would like to do good science. Am I mistaken?

Thanks

As a 20 year veteran of MRL, I can ASSURE you, MRL is NO place to do a Post-Doc

If you have an offer from MRL Boston, take it only if you consider it short term and a simple way to get into industry. Good science goes on, but very poor management. There is also the threat of a massive layoff right down the road (notification end of July?). Attrition is rampant due to lack of respect and viable opportunities (but then again you are in a very active biotech hotbed, so no real hardship there if you hope to stay in Boston).

My advice is take the offer (it should be much more than MGH/HMS--2 to 3x more), but do NOT settle in, do NOT get complacent. Learn as much as you can, network as much as you can, build your resume, then get the hell out of there the VERY FIRST chance you get.

But, with all honesty, I'm really shocked they are offering post doc positons--there is a hiring freeze in all of Merck.

either way, good luck.

I think it is BS that MRL is offering a Post-Doc position at this point in time

I disagree. I am currently a senior scientist in Rahway. Maybe future here in NJ is a little bit black (except for VP and 6 figures managers), but MRL in boston are are gonna have a long life to go and I am positive they are taking new people knocking on the appropriate doors.

May I recommend that you move there then????

Novartis and Pfizer have set up extremely large new R&D centers right in between MIT and Harvard. Wouldn't be surprised if they end up completely dominating for a long time.
