Management Development Candidates...

How do you feel about completely wasting your time jumping through hoops in the "hope" of getting into management?

In an environment where the sales force is contracting, as has been the case for the past 4 years, those who were suckered into continuing to be break out leaders and take on extra tasks are complete LOSERS.

All that time and energy for nothing....pathetic

You just got punked! All that extra work and no payoff... From management development to unemployment. Maybe you can get in the MDP program at Dominos since you have experience delivering food and getting signatures. Pharma is a done...

I was one of those losers. So I completely agree

That's probably not totally accurate. Is it a waste as it pertains to Novartis? Possibly. Does it provide an opportunity to show you are willing to go above expectations for your employer? Possibly. Does it provide an opportunity to polish your peer mentoring skills? Yes. Some reps really need help creating a dialog beyond what is on the vis aid and this provides an opportunity to articulate to them what they can do to make it conversational. As for the readings--I'll agree, that was jumping through hoops.

The sucker is the person who tries to convince him or herself that they are not a sucker but trying to take jabs at people that are trying to excel. I may lose my job with everyone else but it doesn't change that I try to work hard and take pride in what I do while I work for an organization.

Or perhaps those candidates are the ones who will be kept on when the cuts are made.[/QUOTE

Don't count on that beause there is speculation that Novartis will be cutting again in November or the beginning of next year. This is going into phases like Merck and Pfizer did and it is not going away. They are adjusting to the market so please be aware that people that people who do make this cut are not safe and will be going through this again. Instead of MDT people should have gone back for their MBA or Masters degree and should have let Novartis pay for it. Instead they went through bullshit training with nothing to take with them. That is what is ashame.

Sorry OP but you are dead wrong. A management development candidate at least has something on their resume that shows how they stand out. They are more likely to be retained and are more likely to be hired somewhere else. As a hiring manager from another company, I know this is fact. One of the hardest things about being a PC pod rep from big pharma is differentiating yourself from the pack, or even showing that any results are somehow yours. A management development candidate obviously stood out, was selected, had interest in learning and growing, and was building toward future opportunities. Sorry you weren't selected for the program, but they will do better than you!

How can other companies verify that you completed the MDP? Can I put it on my resume to make myself look good?

They can't and that it the real issue. There are so many people that can fake their way into a job. Embellish (to put it nicely) their resume, make up their own sales numbers and even have fake managers giving them references. How would a hiring manager ever know??

Keep chugging that Kool-aid. You're probably one of those people that think everything in the greater economy is just fine because Obama and Warren Buffett say so. You are a T.O.O.L.

Instead of complaining and talking you people should have been working your butts off and getting promotions into specialty and you wouldn't be in this position. Gen Meds/PC is dead n all companies not just Novartis

Yea well some of have attempted this. I was about to be offered the Ilaris postion and then the drug got delayed. Just my luck I probably won't be around when Ilaris does hit the market

Not a MDC, but I completely disagree with OP. There is nothing wrong with being ambitious and wanting to advance your career. It's simple: nothing vetured, nothing gained. It's not their fault the whole pharma industry has changed more these past 5 yrs than the previous 20+, and it's not their fault the upper mgmt shitheads were all too busy drinking one anothers koolaid than making prudent decisions about primary care meds. Don't hate just cause you didn't want to go that route...or couldn't...
