Loads from Surgical Solutions placed on Plans!

What is strange about the plans people are put on this year is that some of the people I know are performing and have performed in recent years. You may just be victim of "consolidation" if you are put on a PIP. You can play the ethics card here if they dont want to give you severance but I agree with everyone they will find a way to not let you survive the plan.

Absolutely true. This is a backhanded layoff, terminating as many people as they can get away with, to avoid paying severance. Although its much cheaper to hassle people until they quit vs terminating. That's the first step. And most reps just quit.

For over a year they've been actively targeting both low performers and high earners/high performers. So if you've gotten a few promotions you better watch your back. They don't want to pay for tenured salespeople anymore. That kid right out of college is much cheaper.

If you're with Covidien and your title/salary isn't entry level, get a new job. Get out however you can but DO NOT quit. They'll fire you eventually and you'll get unemployment while looking for a new job. That's better than nothing.
They have to pay unemployment if they terminate you for performance. At least in most states.
It's true, they'll make sure you don't survive the PIP. But if you're a good rep then don't take this personally. It's a consolidation. If they're going to be shady about it, at least make them pay. Accountability is one of the "core values" of the new Covidien, after all....

Very true.. However, their tactics will bite them in them the ass soon...arrogance can be blind to crossing the line...

I don't really see what the problem is? Just about every company is scaling down and doing their best to PIP vs. Layoff. If they lay people off they will just sue anyways so when you want to get rid of someone you just PIP them and make them want to leave and in the meantime you can create a tough plan tracking the rep to failure to make it a tough for them to have a case. Every company is going this direction. Just see the writing on the wall and go get a different job and if you were not handed a PIP just realize this could eventually happen to you either here or your next company.

The problem is that putting people on PIPs just to cover your ass is BS. especially when they change the expectations during the process.. What would be nice to see is that the management get put on PIPs for their failures to provide realistic expectations while at same time, providing necessary support for field reps. THAT won't ever happen, since they all take care of themselves at VP level and above...

Consolidation!??? Someone needs to sue these companies who use PIP plans to reduce head count. Can anyone say "Class-Action Lawsuite?!

This is nothing new for Covidien. This started last year when the first reps from surgical solutions where rif'd. Many were placed on plans this time last year and everything culminated when the company announced the rif. Most were forced to leave and those that worked their way out of the plan were given severance and asked to leave.

Apparently, if your RM puts you on a PIP, all you have to do is call the Ombudsman and tell a few stories. It might not get you off the plan, but you can see to it that your RM gets fired first. Stay classy, Covidien.

The corollary to this is that calling the ombudsman is also the fastest way to get placed on a PIP.
