Layoffs - version 2011

ddin't you hear the backpedaling msg from DCOS after Ken Frazier spilled the beans?? "there will be no layoffs this year"!! Look for mid 2012 unless Mrk buys a small co our licenses something big

I hope your right for all the people that need to keep their jobs because they are stuck in no man's land with age and/or family situation.

there really is no such thing as being stuck...that is a construct of the mind that is common at Merck...people get seduced by a steady paycheck, and used to a lifestyle...

you may have to get back to your Buddah nature, but you can leave Merck at anytime...

who wants to be stuck in such a toxic cesspool??

There is no such thing in theory, but if your 58 & non Ph.D., try finding something that will match the salary that you have built up over 25+ years with the company. Add to that, finishing up a mortgage and putting a kid though college. Yea that is kind of stuck, but they at least should be looking.

I am lucky I am in my 30s and single, only my desire to move upwards and a slow job market has slowed my exit out of this mess.

Know PhD scientists who are not making as much as many 30 year olds anywhere. Job market bad for everyone but most favored candidates younger. Difficult hire for anyone over 50 in any line of work.

Solution to being stuck or dropped into the cesspool is employee development....an expected manager competency.

Perspective -

For all of you Port 2 reps, I would like to explain what is going on our side of the tracks. As you know, we currently have Dulera(28% to PPO), Singulair and Nasonex. Singulair goes off next year and we are offloading some of our Nasonex sampling responsibility to the contract sales force.

From what I hear from my Port 2 counterparts, Levitra will no longer sampled as of June 30. I just found out that Maxalt is going off next year as well.

In summary, we are left with JJ, Vy/Z, Dulera and 50% of Nasonex roughly 3.5 products. When I showed the 2012 product portfolio to my teammates they agreed that with no REAL products coming out except the Januvia/Simvastatin blockbuster combo that it could be a 50% reduction in headcount. There is no need for all of us. We don't have enough work to do in the first place.

Remember when Bob McMahon told us that we would have more products in our bag. I think he meant what he said. I applaud Ken Frazier for letting us know beforehand what is coming down the pipe. Because there are surely no new drugs unless you count new indications and reformulations coming down the pipe. LOL. Thus the only thing coming down the crap pipe is layoffs. Hey its pharma sales.

If you are a S1 hold on to your knickers. Competencies will be an important component in the next downsizing. Need to have the best (i.e.Haha.) people out there. So dust that ole resume off.

As far as timing is concerned, it could be at anytime. Don't be surprised if we have a teleconference one day and the dreaded call of death the next. I am thinking that it could be sooner rather than later. But who knows.

Good luck to all of you.

If you Port 2 guys don't have enough work to do, why don't you get Dulera above 28% of plan - I heard you haven't even seen half of your targets and your depth sucks. Just saying - not really making a strong case for keeping you folks around!

Thank God I'm not a drug rep anymore. Your job sounds like an awful purgatory to be in at this moment and odds of sliding into hell increasing. Competencies? Please get serious. A Total joke. And people actually exist as reps who report liking their job and career potential? I don't believe it.

This company has had a reliable environment of pending layoffs for several years now and it seems to be the only play in the leadership's playbook. The atmosphere of uncertainty is not going to evaporate and neither logic or rumor can defeat it. There will be fewer employees on January 1, 2012 just as certainly as there were fewer employees on every January 1st for the last 5 years.

Poster has it right. Who knows the finite date when cuts will happen. One thing is for certain, cuts will occur annually indefinitely. This goes for most pharma/biotech companies. Doesn't always count on your performance. Criteria includes: headcount, product sold and geographies. A constant VP winning S-3 isn't necessarily safer than a S-1 underperformer.
S A F R I S or whatever it is called....
One division under the scope is psychiatry. Minimal share with hundreds of reps running around trying to obtain a .06 marketshare. Can I say contract sales force? Our reps are said to be good and should be placed in port I-II to make a financial impact. How much net profit are we really making? Do the math. A red flag is when HQ people start leaving and moving around. God help us. The smart one's are already trying to get out by interviewing internally in other areas. Some are looking to leave mother merck. Not sure how many legacy merck people in psychiatry but imagine there are very few. Those few have probably already aligned their ducks as a backup plan. This sad story resembles dermatology in the past. At least Propecia earns three times more than safris. Saddest thing is that Propecia RX's are ALL out of pocket, no payors. God help us again. To sustain we need products earning hundreds and hundreds of millions if not billions. We are setting ourselves up for failure and layoffs. You don't want to be "pants on da ground, pants on da ground, looking like a foool wit yer pants on da ground". Peace out from FL.
